Tycoon to build porn-free town

A relgious businessman is to spend £250 million building a porn-free town where contraception will be banned.

Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan, who was raised by nuns, says it's 'God's will', reports the Daily Mirror.

Ave Maria will be run on strict Catholic lines, with no selling of porn, condoms or birth control pills, and a ban on X-rated cable TV.

There have already been 7,000 inquiries about the 11,000, homes in Florida - next to a Catholic college also built by Monaghan.

But civil liberties groups predict big legal battles over the bans.

Heh. I sold various skin mags at Boulder High School when I went there. I got more than 50 of them from a local dumpster diver for $5 and sold them for $0.50 per pictorial. That's $1.50 and up per mag.

Of course it is. God forbid we allow like-minded people the ability to congregate and mind their own business.

Only through exercising our tyranny of the majority can those poor misguided souls truly be free.

Aren't there Hasidic Jewish towns in the NE? The Mormons RUN Utah.

There is a bunch in iowa called Maharishi...they think they can float on a magic carpet in their golden dome or something.....

They made t heir own "town"..called Vedic City, and they go as far as to have their own form of currency.

They didn't get shut down.

Why the hell can't another group of likeminded people do the same?

Oh yeah...they're Catholic.

A homeowners association can dictate the height of a person's fence, number of bushes in their yard, and length of boat they can park in the driveway. Why would it be illegal for a community to make such restrictions part of the covenants?

Like minded people are free to congregate and mind their own business just about anywhere in the United States. No one is forcing anyone to buy contraceptives or porn.

Of course, it sounds like the people that are "minding their own business" think they can force merchants to sell or not sell certain items.

This guy is talking about BUILDING a town...not taking one over with his ideals.

Many, many towns/cities have ordinances that prohibit specific businesses and activities.

As long as it wasn't a requirement to be a specific religion to be on a council(again..look no further than Existing Mormon and jewish communities.

I don't see why its a huge issue?

If this community is illegal, somebody better inform the Amish that they are violating the constitutional rights of some people who may want to live in their colonies.

Let the town grow and live on its own I say.

Well, I guess the intellectual assault on religion by the left is nearing fruition...

A group of similar thinking people who want to start their own community and live out their lives in an atmosphere they deem as in tune with their faith immediately invokes a knee-jerk reaction comparison to Hitler by all the "progressive thinkers"....

Some of you guys are scary as shit, and this is coming from an atheist....

It's the American way.

Control everyone else.

Funny though, those proponents for "control" are usually the last ones who want others to "control" them.

I used to think that the United States was a country where folks could persue their own happiness. I was just a kid then. Silly me.

I'm guessing there is no place left on the planet where people could go, start their own country and live their lives freely. Oh well, too bad..

History is filled with these groups/communities. But think back to your 3rd or 4th grade history classes...how and why were the original American colonies founded? I'm not saying I'm for or against this. As a religious group, the usual goal is to have a positive impact and influence on the world around you, but this kind of seclusion doesn't result in that. So, in that regard, I don't think its the smartest idea, but I don't particularly think its illegal.

Doesn't seem to be inherently illegal, if set up correctly.

1. You can control what you sell at the businesses you own.

2. You can't prohibit what people can buy if they go to a nearby town.

As long as his town doesn't have ordinances against USING condoms or the pill or whatever, then he should be ok, I would think.

jidar

I don't see anything legally wrong with it. It's the type of thing you should be able to do here.

In fact, I'm all for it. I think all the stuffy religious bastards ought to go do this. Then they wouldn't be trying to pass laws to ban Internet porn and other crazy crap like that.

Gotta have your internet porn.

so, what happens when one store owner decides to sell condoms?

does the local government have control over legal items being sold in a store inside their borders? or can they legally throw him out of "their" town?

and if we can build towns that "ban" legal stuff, why can't someone build a town that makes illegal stuff legal (drugs, for instance)?

No one lives in Canada, you could go there and set up your own country.

I am actually torn on this issue. I understand that like minded people wanting to live in a community so they are/are not exposed to the things that they want/don't want to be exposed to. But I also don't see why people cant just do that without having to have their own "special place". You dont like porn, then dont watch/buy/or participate in it. Why does one person they have the right to tell someone else what they can and cant do. The option should be there and the individual should have the right to choose if they want to use that resource.

I think you just answered your own question.

Why shouldn't that liberty be extended to the group in question here who want to start their own community? If they were Muslim or Amish or Jewish would any of you still be speaking out against their right to community living?
