<A name=296081>Buccaneers | Griese released
Fri, 10 Mar 2006 16:09:14 -0800Roy Cummings (http://www.kffl.com/link/135), of the Tampa Tribune (http://www.kffl.com/link/134), reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (http://www.kffl.com/team/35/nfl) have released QB Brian Griese (http://www.kffl.com/player/602/nfl), as they gained compliance with the 2006 salary cap. Agent Ralph Cindrich said he remains hopeful his client will still spend the 2006 season in Tampa Bay. ''They have a proposal from us and we'll get with them tomorrow and pick it up from there,'' Cindrich said. ''It's unfortunate we have to go this way, but being comfortable, liking the coaches is important to Brian and he has that (in Tampa), so we'll see what happens.''

Adam T. just said the trade for Culpepper could happen at any time, and the Raiders hadn't even made the Vikes an offer.

This is good news if Oakland gets Daunte Culpepper. The guy is an overrated player who can't read defenses.

They've said is much here in Dallas on the two sports stations... Moss was interviewed by Dan Patrick and you could hear it in his voice... Culpepper will soon be a Raider.

That may be, but prior to 2005 (no Moss and the injury) he did pretty well... esp in 2000, 2003 and 2004.

The Raiders have good receivers and a decent ground game... a trade for Culpepper isn't really a good thing for non-Raider fans.

Damn right. If Culpepper is healthy, this could be the re-emergence of the Raiders.

The Raiders won't have the "great offense" everyone will predict them to have (if they get C-Pep) with that Oline. Culpepper won't even be ready to play until mid october. anyways.

A. Half of his games were played in a dome.

B. The NFC North is the weakest division in football and has been during that entire stretch.

Color me unimpressed.

is that why only one team in our divison got into the playoffs

So the AFC South is tougher because the jags went to the playoffs? The fact that AFC West is the toughest division makes it harder for multiple teams to make the playoffs because of the strength of schedule. Not to mention our division had to play the NFC East, another very tough division. The only divisions that could arguably be the best besides ours, are the NFC South and East. The Bucs would not have even had a winning record in the AFC West, but the East is debatable.

They'll need to score at least 35 points a game to compensate for their complate lack of defense.

Ra!ders officially cut ties to CollinsNancy Gay, Chronicle Staff Writer Saturday, March 11, 2006The Kerry Collins era in Oaklnd officially ended Friday afternoon when the team waived its former starting quarterback, saving the team about $9.1 million against the new $102 million salary cap. That leaves the Ra!ders with sixth-year quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo -- who has nine regular-season appearances and two NFL starts in five seasons -- and second-year quarterback Andrew Walter, who missed all of 2005 with a groin tear, as the only quarterbacks on their roster.

But the Ra!ders are not poised to replace Collins with Daunte Culpepper, despite numerous published reports indicating the team is hotly pursuing a trade for the disgruntled Minnesota Vikings star. Senior assistant Michael Lombardi said Friday the Ra!ders have made no trade offer for Culpepper, who e-mailed reporters this week demanding that the Vikings either trade him or release him. While Minnesota owner Zygy Wilf told reporters from the Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press he would not "rule out the fact" that trade talks were ongoing with several teams, Lombardi said the Ra!ders have only discussed Culpepper's status with the Vikings. "We have not made an offer," Lombardi reiterated.

The Ra!ders have entertained the prospect of acquiring Culpepper over the past few weeks. But with additional cap space available because of the new six-year extension of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, the Ra!ders appear to be backing off of Culpepper -- who is coming off a serious knee injury -- as a short-term option at quarterback.

Chargers quarterback Drew Brees, who is expected to be released by San Diego, would be an ideal replacement for Collins. But the Dolphins and the Saints are expected to aggressively pursue the former Pro Bowler. There are other quarterback options in free agency, such as Cincinnati's Jon Kitna, Carolina's Chris Weinke, Arizona's Josh McCown, the Jets' Jay Fiedler and Atlanta's Ty Detmer.

Collins, 33, had a 7-21 record as a starter in two seasons with the Ra!ders, after taking over for injured veteran Rich Gannon in the 2004 season. Despite completing 302 passes for 3,759 yards in 2005 -- his most since the 2002 season with the New York Giants -- and 20 touchdowns, Collins' lack of mobility hindered him. He was sacked 39 times and threw 12 interceptions in 15 starts last season. Collins' release was expected.

His agent, David Dunn, said Baltimore has expressed interest, where Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel, the former Giants coach, is eager to reunite with Collins, who quarterbacked the team in the 2001 Super Bowl. "I think that would be an ideal situation for Kerry," Dunn said. For now, the Raiders are expected to turn the starting job over to Walter, follow the free agent market and explore their options in the draft. Texas quarterback Vince Young, who led the Longhorns to the national championship, is thought to be a favorite of team owner AD
