I just put a house under contract that has a koi pond and a hot tub (spa), neither of which I have any experience maintaining. Helpful maintenance tips would be appreciated.

Just put the koi in the hot tub. You will save money in the long run.

Hot tub maint. chemicals, runs all time. keep it covered when not in use.

110/220 electric to tub will effect your bill. (220 better). How old is the tub?

Koi pond, PH checking for fish, bio filter etc. Feeding.

Your in for some fun....

Fun meaning work I suppose. The tub is 5 years old but I'm not sure if it's 110 or 220.

Wow... so can you fish while you're sitting in the hot tub?

Stock that mother with trout.... screw those koi... they're too hard to clean....

If you are a boy
Don't bathe with the Koi
They'll nibble your phallus
With spite and with malice

For Koi are the meanest
When they snack on your penis
And you dick's not a dish
For a Japanese fish

Koi ponds are the spawn of Satan.

How many gallons is it? In direct sunlight for how long? How many fish (in inches)?

Errrr, ummmmm, no idea really. It's not huge and it in the shade. Prolly 12 fish in there but I didn't take an inventory. :)

For some reason, I am thinking that JimN won't have much trouble getting stuff to grow in the hot tub nor have trouble killing stuff in the Koi Pond.

Well, it's good that it's in the shade.

You'll need to figure out the volume of the pond and the length of fish you have first. Once that is done, you can check to make sure the pump is the correct size.

The main enemy is going to be algae. Get a good, oversized biofilter (if there isn't one already) and make sure the pump is big enough.

I'd recommend Cyprio's UV biofilters: http://www.pondpals.com/pond_filtration_systems/cyprio.html

Depending on the size of the pond, expect to spend a few hours a week maintaining it.

Fill them both up with rocks. I've got some that you can have. They're rocks of lies and deception, and they have no place in my life.
