Amber Alert: Teen abducted in Independence, Kan.

Authorities have issued an Amber Alert for a 17-year-old girl who was abducted about 6:30 a.m. today from her home in Independence, Kan.

Kelsey Stelting, who was wearing black gym or workout clothes, was then taken about two blocks near a business called Wood Lumber and forced into a white van. The van is believed to be driving south on U.S. 75 out of Independence, which is in southeast Kansas.

Kelsey is 5-feet-4 and 110 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was last seen at 215 Pine in Independence.

Anyone with information is being asked to call 911, the Independence Police Department at (620) 332-1700, or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at (800) KS-CRIME.

by the way the boyfriend was at school all day and all her friends that we know of too. he was extremley upset all day and was questioned early in the day. (my daughter is a friend),
news conference a minute ago says she was not molested in any way but not much more to go on other than she was released unharmed at a local residence and called the police from there.

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. -- A missing 16-year-old girl who was reportedly abducted Tuesday morning has been found unharmed, police said.

"She's in good physical condition," Police Chief Lee Bynum said late Tuesday. "She appears to be fine."

Kelsey Lynn Stelting disappeared around 6:30 a.m. while getting ready for school, said her mother, Kelly Cox, earlier in the day. The softball player was getting a bag of softball bats from the family car and did not return to the house, Cox said.

During a news conference near the teen's home, Bynum said Stelting walked up to a home in Independence just before 10 p.m. The occupant, whom she did not know, then called police.


Bynum said authorities did not know whether she was dropped off in front of the house, and he declined to speculate about whether she had escaped.

Kelsey was taken to police headquarters at City Hall and was still being questioned late Tuesday.

No one has been arrested, and law enforcement continued to search late Tuesday for a suspect. The white van that reportedly was linked to the kidnapping was not immediately recovered.

Bynum said he had little information about what took place during the more than 15 hours the teen was missing.

"It's just too early to have that kind of information," he said.

FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said cases of strangers abducting people are uncommon, but when they occur law enforcement has little time to find the victim safely.

"Cases like this don't often end this way," he said.

Stelting's younger brother, Cody, 8, said he was pleased with the outcome as he waited with family and friends for the start of the news conference.

"I felt kind of scared at first, but now I'm kind of happy," he said.

Earlier, friends and family members hugged and jumped up and down as news of the girl's safe return spread.

"For a split second you are overjoyed," said Lisa Wilson, her aunt. "And then fear sets in until they said the words, 'She's OK."'

Based on a 911 call the teen made from her cell phone after she was abducted, Wilson said police believed there was only one kidnapper.

"She doesn't know where she's been," Wilson said. "She's been driving around all day."

Her boyfriend of more than two years, Brandon Kelley, a 17-year-old junior, said he was stunned by the news.

"It's kind of one of those things that melted over you. It finally felt OK," he said as he stood on the street after visiting the girl's home.

A friend and neighbor, 16-year-old Lauren Lester, said she cried when she heard the news from a family member. Asked if she felt good, she said, "Oh, yes."

Earlier in the day, Kelsey's stepfather, Doug Cox, told the Independence Daily Reporter that police believed the teen was approached by a man with a gun who told her to run about six blocks to Woods Lumber Co. or she would be killed along with her family.

Bynum said earlier Tuesday that when she got to Woods Lumber, she was told to get into a white van that apparently was waiting at the business.

The van, whose make and model were not known, was last seen going south on U.S. 75 toward Oklahoma, which is only about 15 miles from Independence, population of about 9,400.

Cox said when she went outside to see where Kelsey was, the doors to the family's car were open, with the keys on the ground. Cox said she didn't see or hear anything before she went outside.

"Shortly after that we called authorities," Cox said in a telephone interview. "We knew something was wrong right away."

The family had offered a $50,000 reward for the girl's safe return.

Dozens had gathered earlier in the evening at the First United Methodist Church, where the girl's family are members, and the neighboring First Baptist Church to pray for the safe return of the teen. She was described as a good student who was a member of the student council and captain of the dance team.

Another news conference was planned for Wednesday morning.

Channel 6 News out of Tulsa is all over this story. At 9:30 this morning I saw their news van heading north on Hiway 75 toward Independence. They are still there giving live reports periodically. The FBI and KBI questioned the girl till past 9:30 tonight. They are really grilling her it appears. Moreso than what you would expect of a victim. They are still planning a news conference yet tonight. I'll keep you posted as this unfolds. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

The only other thing is that according to everyone that knows this girl, she's a good person.

Friends and acquaintances described the girl as bright, a good student who is involved in such activities at Independence High School as softball, cheerleading, dance squad and student government. They said they didn't see signs of trouble at home or school or anything to cause them to doubt that she had been abducted.

"She's one of our finest students," said principal Jim Runge. "She's a tremendous person. I'd love to have her as my daughter. You have 700 like her, and you don't need a principal."

To quite a few local folks, (including me), the story fell apart from time they released the 911 call. According to the family late this afternoon, there are "medical reasons" involved in the whole story. My money is on pregnancy. She coulda blamed being pregnant on her "kidnap experience".
Lots of ppl are pretty pissed at her; she should pay in some manner, but bottom line is she's a 16 year old kid who bit off WAY more than she could chew.

Ironically, my mom just called me and told me that my cousin, her sisters 20 year old daughter, Laura Hoeltzel has been missing since Monday in Bella Vista Arkansas.

Ironically, my mom just called me and told me that my cousin, her sisters 20 year old daughter, Laura Hoeltzel has been missing since Monday in Bella Vista Arkansas.

Good Luck with that Ali, hope everything is ok. Strange, but this hoax crap is certainly perferrable to the alternative w/ a worst case outcome. Sad thing is, her BS impacts future reports, and cost a lot of people time, $, energy, and mental worry for family/friends/concerned citizens. She should pay, but not with any hard type of incarceration. The community service suggestion, and lots of it, is a damn good idea.

My bet is, the guy who's house she ended up at. It happened just early enough in the morning for her to drop him off at school (so he doesn't get counted absent) and go off and have an abortion without anybody knowing.

Then she shows up at this guys' house and gets caught. When she admits to lying about it, she makes up yet another story about running around the woods all day.

i was kind of upset that when the family did their statement, she was not drug out there to apoligize to the town on the air.
some new news i have come across is that she MIGHT have done this to a smaller extreme when she was younger. i guess when she was in 4th grade she claimed someone was trying to grab her from the school playground and later she also said someone tried to get her at a store. what is up with that? i think she may need some serious help, but she still needs to learn a lesson, a hard lesson from this. keep in mind this is a rumor but is believeable.
