For my 10,000th post, I thought Id pass an idea on.
Check this... Google's Adsense is triggered off of keywords that are in articles... certain key words are WAY more valuable click throughs and worth more cash than other keywords...
So, I say, once a day, someone starts a thread pertaining to one of these KEYWORDs... and then we all click the ad at the top of the google ad banner to get some coin thrown at Kyle, so he can upgrade shit around here.
Here are some key words to start threads about... then click the google ad! This could be interesting

The owner HAS had money thrown to fix the place up....more than once.
It would be great to have it fixed, so it doesn't melt down on tuesday mornings in the offseason.

Anyone have any idea how much coin it costs to keep this place running a month?

Yes Because everyone is just rushing to post the next thread about how CNN listed Arrowhead as #1 and then the regular posters have to come by and post their token response,

Kyles Adsense code is set for permanent ads, instead of variable data. If he were to change that, he could make hella money for CP.
I bet Taco is making some decent money from Adsense... like how he has the google ads within the forum threads...
How much it pulling in for the Mange? approx?

Server access shouldn't run more than a C note a month. The key is a nice 2u server with multi-processors. When I had Chiefsplanet on my server it never had preformance issues. It had 2 processors and never ran above a .7 load. I'd love to know the current config and what else is running on the server because something is a major hog of resources.

No, the adsense idea is golden, but until Kyle takes it off of the permanent ad... it will do no good.
Ill just have to use it to make my site money!! mwaha ha ah...

#41 VOIP
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=138781&highlight=Gizmo
I was just goofing around and found this VOIP freeware. It works similarly to an IM program in that it lets you make phone calls from PC to PC (includes Macs) with other people who have the program. The difference is that it lets you receive calls from cell phones and land lines for free. You get a phone number with a Nevada area code, so it is a long distance call for someone to call you from outside the 775 area code, but most cell phone plans have free national long distance these days so you can use that way. It also lets you call out to cells and land lines for a fairly small fee. The quality is dependant on the internet connection(s) involved. Kind of cool and you get a real phone number for free.

Upon Edit: You can download a version for PCs, Macs or LINUX.

Who exactly is paying $100 just for one click through to their ad, if you don't buy anything? :spock:

We've been told repeatedly that money is not the reason for problems on this site. People have made an effort to put their collective IT minds together to solve the problem, and a certain website owner has been unreceptive to the offers for help.
So while I sit through several meltdowns per day, I don't have a lot of motivation to put more money in Kyle's pocket.

I offered to help... Upgrades talked about in the tech committee
Move the 'database' to MySQL 5.0, VBulletin version upgrade.
Needs to test new version of CP Vbulletin and MySQL 5.0
on non-prod machine or risk have the Chiefs planet down for an extended amount of time, if things don't go smooth on an untested migration.
This was table to the offseason. Guess what...It's the off season...
Ad revenue is something is nice but our platform is less that prod quality and stable.

So what's the deal then? Is it being tested on a non-prod machine (whatever the hell that is)? And if not, what is the hold up?

Non-prod machine Seperate server machine invisble to members.
Haven't talked with other members on tech committee. Have open post over there.

Being a part of the Tech committee is a bit frustrating, cmac and I worked pretty hard to get the new layout done, which while nice, wasn't the most important thing this bb needed, yeah, call me captain obvious. I think we are waiting on Austin to get his hacks into the new version of the BB and then we can add our interface on top of it.
But hey, we are just in a holding pattern as usual.

In response to Dave Lane, here's a few things I've chosen to let you in on.
1) Some people here are already aware, but the server uses IDE hard drives.
2) There are several other websites running on the server.

They suffer the same performance problems ours do, because the performance problems are system-level and affect all of the virtual servers.
However, nobody notices because they are smaller sites with not nearly as much traffic.

I have noticed that sometimes the others stay up when ours is down, of course sometimes they all just go down as well.

Since we are running a a shared server with other websites, hardware drive changes, dual process machine etc. Would be a big coordination effort with other admins
to arrange down time. Off season is the time to do it.

Eventually, I think Kyle will just let the planet die.
He's got this fabulous, pure bred interweb dog, and it won't do any good to buy it more food and water, if he won't clean the bowl and fill it with fresh, once in a while.
Does Kyle own the server? is that one of the issues?

I wish they would just do it. Post a message that in a week the board will be down for X number of days, and get the thing fixed.
Of course, don't do it the week of the draft. :)

It is the SIZE of the db that is the issue... simply throwing hardware at it won't fix the problem. There are three things that need to be done to "fix" it.
#1 The db needs to be trimmed again, and the OLD posts placed into a seperate "archive" db. (this is a very very very long and tedious process with VBulletin)
#2 We are long overdue for a server upgrade(I will need to run the old and new server concurrently for one month while we migrate)
#3 I have installed and tested the newest version of VBulletin and just need to finish up a few hacks that I have been working on (first post at top of every page, etc etc)
Each of these takes a good deal of time, that frankly I haven't had lately... back when I actually had free time, I posted on here all the time AND kept the site well maintained. I should be done moving and furnishing my new place before the end of the month. At that time I will try to get us a new server, this will expedite the rest of the work because frankly, I don't want to pay for two servers and I can't dump the old one until it is done.
And for those curious, I pay about $130/month in server cost... and the money that has come has never been close to what has gone out. I'm not complaining, nor is money the issue... time is the issue. If the Planet was my job, of course I would have time.
