20. KANSAS CITY
By the numbers: 2005 W-L: 10-6; Rankings: Off - 1; R-4; P-6... Def - 25; R-7; P-30

2006 Picks: Total - 7; (1) 20 (2) 54 (3) 85 (5) 154 (6) 186, 190 (7) 228... The Chiefs have the normal complement of 7 picks this year, however, they get there without a 4th rounder, but an extra 6th.

Recent draft history: It hasn't always been pretty. The Chiefs do appear to have hit the jackpot with the Johnson boys - LB Derrick and RB Larry - taken in the first rounds in 2005 and 2003 respectively. Same for surprising DE Jared Allen (4/2004) and LB Kawicka Mitchell (2/2003) both of whom are solid enough starters. However, the Chiefs haven't gotten much else from their recent drafts. Indeed, only 5-6 players drafted in the past five years are part of the Chiefs' projected starting lineup for the upcoming season. The Chiefs' problems on draft day in recent yaers are most glaring on the defensive line where the team has invested premium picks on DTs Ryan Sims (1/2002) and Junior Siavii (1/2004) and DEs Eddie Freeman (2/2002) and Eric Downing (3/2001), however, only Sims is a current starter and even he has been a major disappointment since the Chiefs went to the mat to take the former North Carolina star 6th overall in 2002.

2006 Needs: It sounds a little like a broken record, but the Chiefs need defense, defense and more defense at the 2006 draft to give their #1 rated offense a chance to be more than high-scoring also rans. CB would be an excellent place to start after the Chiefs already porous 30th ranked pass defense literally has no one to line up opposite steady veteran Patrick Surtain. The Chiefs also need a speed rusher coming off the edge, either at the DE slot opposite Jared Allen or at LB. And while they are at it, another big body in the middle of the underachieving defensive front would also appear to be a priority. And while the Chiefs feature the NFL's top-rated offense, the team can't ignore several concerns on that side of the ball, especially a receiver corps which really doesn't scare anyone. The Chiefs also have to begin to think about grooming a young OT to replace veteran Willie Roaf on the left side. Meanwhile, the Chiefs will also need to replace dependable FB Tony Richardson who left via free agency.

Prognosis: It is hard to imagine in a great year at the position that the Chiefs won't be taking a CB with their #1 pick this year from a group that should include at least some of Tye Hill of Clemson, Antonio Cromartie of Florida State, Ashton Youbity of Ohio State and Johnathan Joseph of South Carolina. Combo CB/FSs Jimmy Williams of Virginia Tech, who is slipping, and Tennessee's Jason Allen, who is rising, could also figure in the mix. And if the Chiefs figure they can get a quality corner with their second round pick, they could be tempted by a DE, either Tamba Hali of Penn State or Mathias Kiwanuka of Boston College, or a tweener like Manny Lawson of NC State or Kamerion Wimbley of Florida State. The surprise pick here might be a WR like Santonio Holmes of Ohio State or Florida's Chad Jackson.

That's a pretty good analysis of the team.

Jimmy Williams would look really good in red & gold. So would Hali.

If we got a Jimmy Williams/Hill/any other 1st round corner and Tamba Hali in the second the rest would be just gravy. There would be much rejoicing.

Holy shit, a Jimmy Williams in the first/Tamba Hali in the second draft would dwarf last year's even...
