I'm currently going through 3D visualization (rendering/animation) training for Microstation. Pretty imressive. But I'm sure there are ones out there that are just as good or better. Any suggestions?

Microstation can do high end stuff. Somehow I doubt Sketchup is in the same league. But thanks for the info. I'll heck it out.

Microstation is okay I guess. It's a bit limited tho'.

Top CGI apps = 3D Studio Max (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=5659302&siteID=123112), Autodesk's Maya (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?id=6871843&siteID=123112), Newtek's Lightwave (http://www.newtek.com/lightwave/film.php), and Pixologic's ZBrush (http://pixologic.com/home/home.shtml) (used primarily for creating high-detail displacement mapping)

Pixar's Renderman (https://renderman.pixar.com/products/whatsrenderman/index.htm) is the shizzie for rendering.

Go HERE (http://www.cgsociety.org/) for the best source of info on the subject (IMO)

Thx HC. I guess 3D Studio is the one I had heard before as being pretty good. Between that and Renderman which would you choose if you could get one for cheap? And why? (This question also goes to anybody else reading this post.)

I know virtually nothing about it, but I've always heard that Maya is awesome.

3DS Max is the one you want.

You will not get ANY of these "cheap"

I highly recommend ZBrush, no matter what you decide. That is one amazing application.

"Cheap" was an unfortunate choice of words on my part. I do have Microstation V8 though.
