DENNY THUM PROMOTED TO EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
May 16, 2006, 10:45:01 AM

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that he has promoted Denny Thum to the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer effective immediately. Thum enters his 33rd season of service with the Chiefs organization in 2006 after serving the past 10 seasons as the club’s Executive Vice President/Assistant General Manager. Thum originally received the title of Assistant General Manager in ‘89 from Peterson and added the responsibilities of Executive Vice President to his Assistant General Manager duties in ‘96.

“Denny Thum is well deserving of this promotion to Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Peterson remarked. “He has vast experience and knowledge of the football administration side of our club, particularly the very important aspect of player compensation. His extensive knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and his expertise working with both cash and cap budgets, as well as his skills as a negotiator have become exceedingly vital in the salary cap era. Without question, Denny has been an extremely important contributor to the success of the Chiefs organization for many, many years.

“In addition to his current duties overseeing the budgets for football operations, player compensation and the salary cap, I believe it is exceedingly important that we utilize Denny’s management skills in all areas of the Kansas City Chiefs organization at this time. As the Chief Operating Officer he will report directly to me as he oversees the budgets for other areas in our organization, including sales, marketing, capital improvements, information services, stadium operations, promotions, accounting and business operations of the Chiefs. He will work in conjunction with me and team ownership in formulating the short-term and long-term strategic plans for the continued vitality of the Chiefs franchise. Certainly, no one is more appropriate or deserving in our organization for this promotion.”

Widely recognized by his peers across the NFL for his ongoing contributions to the success of the Chiefs franchise, Thum has long played a major role in virtually every area of the club’s day-to-day football operation. Due in large part to his efforts, Kansas City has been one of the NFL’s most consistently competitive franchises in the salary cap era (’94-present). During that span, only four clubs — Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Denver and New England — boast a better regular season record than the Chiefs, who own a 122-86 (.587) mark over the past 12 seasons.

During his tenure as Executive Vice President/Assistant General Manager over the past 10 years, Thum has worked in close conjunction with Peterson in formulating Kansas City’s strategy relative to player compensation and the salary cap. He monitors the salary cap status of the Chiefs and every other NFL team on a daily basis and serves with Peterson in the negotiation of Kansas City’s player contracts. Thum continues to be heavily involved in the preparation of the entire football budget and takes a hands-on role working with the coaching and player personnel staffs, as well as the club’s athletic training, equipment and video staffs. Additionally, he oversees all of the club’s training camp operations and coordinates the numerous logistical issues associated with team travel.

The St. Louis, Missouri native began his longtime tenure with Kansas City’s NFL franchise as a staff accountant in ‘74. Aside from Founder Lamar Hunt, Thum is one of just four individuals who own the distinction of being continuously employed by the franchise during the tenure of all 10 head coaches in Chiefs history. Much has changed at Arrowhead Stadium since the Hank Stram era, and Thum has been an important player in helping the franchise evolve with a changing business and NFL climate. He was named the club’s Chief Accountant in ‘82 and was promoted to Director of Accounting in ‘83 before being elevated to the position of Assistant to the General Manager from ‘84-88. Thum was promoted to Assistant General Manager by Peterson shortly after Peterson’s arrival in Kansas City in ‘89.

A ‘74 graduate of Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Thum is also a distinguished alum of St. Louis University High School in St. Louis. Thum is on the Board of Directors for the St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation. He previously served on the Alumni Board of Directors for Rockhurst University and is still actively involved in supporting his alma mater. Thum and his wife Carmen also take a hands-on role with a number of other charitable causes in Kansas City, including the Medical Missions Foundation and the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired.
