I think the folks at Idol actually cut the contestants arms off, count the rings to verify their age and then sew them back on. So I am guessing he was at least 28 at the start of the season.

When watching the show last night it looked as though the gray in his hair was sprayed in...kinda like that halloween crap you can buy.

It just looked a little too frosty to me.
