What version of Photoshop?

doesn't really matter, most people only use 5% of that program.

Yep but you need to be specific to the version of Photoshop you are using when you Google it.

Radiant Vista (http://www.radiantvista.com/) is a great PS site with tons and tons of content ranging from podcasts to critiques to forums. It's geared more toward enhancing photos than Fark-style screwing around, but it will probably teach you quite a bit. If you're a total and complete newbie, it might be worth taking a continuing ed course in your town. They're fairly cheap, and you can probably learn the basics quicker than trying to slog through it on your own.

Why are you buying an out-of-date version of PS?

The CS versions, after 7, have made PS so much simpler and easier to learn with some things being automated. Even CS2 has made more changes that do away with some previous stuff.

You must have a boot-legged version of the program?

What most don't know about PS is that it is a very DEEP program. The easy stuff is easy enough and can generate some good results. But if you want to swim with the sharks one has to go deeper, which is a much longer learning curve.

A fabulous book...is "Adobe PS CS: One-on-One" by Deke McClelland. $39.95 with training videos and lessons. He gets into a more thorough explanation so one can think for oneself. Web tutorials are pretty good imo for learning specific visual effects afterwards or for getting an effect done quikcly until one knows the program. But you can still run into snarls if you don't understand the basics first as they build on earlier material.

This book will deepen your understanding by learning PS from the ground up. It's equivalent to a 12 week intensive course on digitial imaging. You'll get more out of the program because you will be able to "think" with it for the effects you want. You can even draw in the program.
