Chiefs' Roaf retires
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
RIVER FALLS, Wis. | Tackle Willie Roaf, the foundation of one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, has retired.

Roaf wasn’t with the Chiefs when they reported for training camp on Thursday. Roaf told The Kansas City Star this morning by telephone that he had told president/general Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards of his plans weeks ago and even sent the Chiefs a letter declaring his intentions.

“I guess they want me to reconsider,’’ Roaf told The Star. “I’m solid on retiring and going back to school.’’

Roaf, 36, was emphatic in the spring that he would play this season. But today he said lingering hamstring and knee trouble led to his decision.

Roaf missed six games last season because of hamstring problems. He missed half of the 2001 season while playing for New Orleans after tearing knee ligaments.

Roaf joined the Chiefs in a trade from the Saints in 2002 and was a major factor in their offensive success. His retirement leaves a significant hole at left tackle.

Edwards said Thursday the Chiefs would use Jordan Black at left tackle and Kyle Turley at right tackle when practice begins this afternoon.

Roaf played 13 NFL seasons and made the Pro Bowl in all but two of them. Despite playing on only teams to reach the playoffs, Roaf will likely be selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The only positive is instead of coming to TC and getting hurt week 1, the Chiefs have time to give the reps to someone else.

the chiefs shouldn't have signed law. They are going 8-8 this year just enough to keep fans buying tickets. No way this team does better than that. KK just called in, and reports that the Chiefs don't appear as concerned as they might be. A Player told StJohn that he believes Roaf is out because he wants some more money......and that he doesn't like training camp. He didn't like Vermiel because of the long practices, was thrilled when Edwards was hired and is scheduled to make $3.5mil this year....the high of his career.

they say there is a big difference between being gone the first day of camp...and the first week of Sept.

Weren't there reports a few weeks ago that Roaf's contract was reworked? Carl didn't deny it he just said it was "nothing major." It seems odd that there was some contract work two weeks ago, but yet Roaf still wants more money.

(July 28, 2006) -- Eleven-time Pro-Bowl selection and future Hall-of-Fame offensive tackle Willie Roaf intends to retire, his agent Peter Schaffer confirmed this morning.

"He's retiring to spend more time with his family," said Schaffer, adding that Roaf is now in Pine Bluff, Ark., celebrating his son's birthday this weekend.

Roaf also has battled knee and hamstring injuries that have left him hobbling and wondering whether he could play at the same level he always had. At training camp last summer, Roaf told NFL Network he expected the 2005 season to be his last, but the offensive tackle clearly wavered in his thinking before deciding he had enough in recent weeks.

Roaf's decision is a big blow to the Kansas City Chiefs and what typically has been football's best offensive line. It already had lost right tackle John Welbourn to retirement and now has lost Roaf, leaving the Chiefs to patch up a unit that has dominated in recent years.

Now, when the Chiefs assemble for their first training camp practice this afternoon, Jordan Black will line up as Kansas City's starting left tackle and free-agent acquisition Kyle Turley will line up as the team's starting right tackle.

A Chiefs spokesman said Roaf's decision did not surprise them. The Chiefs knew that Roaf was on a year-to-year basis when they traded for him in 2002. Now that year has come, Schaffer said, and Roaf is done.

It also marks the second successive day an offensive lineman has made some of the biggest news of the day. On July 27, Cleveland center LeCharles Bentley, the face of the Browns free-agent class, ruptured his Achilles' tendon on the team's first contact play of training camp. Bentley will miss the 2006 season.

Roaf retired because he does not feel he can physically perform to the level that he should, and I'd bet he does not have confidence in his ability to finish the season. The hamstring will not heal. In that sense, Willie did us a favor. Would it be better for him to play and go down in week 2? Or worse, not get injured but just not be able to perform the way we have come to expect? After he lets go of a couple of sacks, we'd all be sitting around pissed because he didn't retire...

...also, I hope Jordan Black reads the forum and uses it as inspiration to prove us all wrong.

Since he had been on the last year of his contract, his entire base salary will go back into our cap if he indeed retires.

good lord people. this is not the end of the season. i do believe we still have a whole training camp to go through, which gives one of the younger guys a chance to step up and get better. now while jordan black had plenty of problems pass blocking, he did a decent job of run blocking. let's not jump ship yet...

Shhhhhhh! This is when the Planet gets good some of us have been waiting for a good meltdown. ROFLROFL

But I am with you does losing Roaf hurt ... yes ... is it the end of the season ... no way. One person does not make the team. If he is retired, and I don't blame him for doing it at his age, you move on and keep your eye on the prize.

Chiefs' Roaf retires
By ADAM TEICHER

RIVER FALLS, Wis.

Tackle Willie Roaf, the foundation of one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, has retired.

Roaf told The Kansas City Star this morning by telephone that he had told president/general Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards of his plans weeks ago and even sent the Chiefs a letter declaring his intentions.

This really sucks if true. If it is true, thank you Big Willie for everything you did for the Chiefs and Chiefs fans. Godbless and hope to see you in the hall of fame soon. Now fellow Chiefs fans, all is not lost, don't jump ship yet. Will Shields can play LT, he has filled in at both tackle positions in the past when needed. Move Jordan Black to guard if he doesn't work out at LT in TC. This also gives the young players like Sampson and Sviteck more reps to develope. And if all else fails, move Brian Waters to fullback with the mission to kill anyone who comes close to Trent.

Interesting thoughts. I have to wonder if there might be some connection to DV and AS leaving. It is hard to imagine but certainly possible that the offensive guys were playing for Dick and with him gone, have no connection to Herm to get them motivated to continue playing.

Probably my favorite post of the year...Im going to save this little ditty in my archive, not because I think it will be useful in the future, but because it's just sooo genious (chiefsplanet spelling) and it's a wonderful example of The Lexicon

Somebody else said it earlier. They said Carl sat on the information until now, after tickets went on sale... only tickets are not on sale yet.

Roaf WAS a football god but I think we'll be okay. The short term looks a bit gloomy but I think with the shifting focus of the offense and upgrades elsewhere that a more balanced team will somewhat offset the loss of such a great player.

Yes, it's easy to mock, but just how F'ing funny is it to have someone seriously bust that out? There really is no substitute to a incoherent, sputtering, spittle-flinging-'Dammit Carl' rant.

Cochise,

You just exposed yourself as not being one of Carl's "real fans". Full/final payments for season ticket holders was due a couple of weeks ago. Nice try though - would have been better if your understood when the bulk of the money for Chiefs tickets is received and deposited by King Carl.

Anyway single game tickets are small potatoes in the larger picture of revenue genetation for the year. They have already sold 73,000 season tickets per game. Arrowhead seats 79,000+ correct?

I don't think he simply intended to do it today. He just didn't show up for camp, so the media finally came after him asking him questions. He supposedly told a TV reporter in Louisiana he was seriously considering retirement a month ago. It appears he told Carl and Herm, so I guess he figured they could answer that.

Report says Chiefs tackle Roaf retiring

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (AP) -- Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Willie Roaf has told a newspaper that he's retiring.

But the Chiefs say they aren't so sure.

The 36-year-old Roaf told the Kansas City Star today that he was leaving a 14-year career in which he became one of the finest offensive linemen in the game. His departure could tear a big hole in one of the finest offensive lines in the league.

But Chiefs president Carl Peterson says neither he nor head coach Herm Edwards had spoken with Roaf in several weeks and they are leaving the door open.

The newspaper said Roaf says he had told Peterson and Edwards of his intention weeks ago, as well as sent the team a letter saying what he intended to do.

Roaf has suffered from hamstring and knee injuries. He says he wants to go back to school.

Looks like good old Carl got all of the "real fans" to buy their tickets before he pulled the curtains back on his carnival of BS and treated his audience to a bad joke. This type of thing is vintage Peterson. Set the fans up for a Super Bowl contender so he can line his pockets, then announce after all tickets are paid for that one of the key pieces won't be around.

Yeah. That's it. Carl just KNEW that if Roaf left, nobody would buy tickets. That is the reason we all love our Chiefs, after all...Big Willie Roaf...the ONLY reason to be a fan...

I have to think it's more than wanting to miss training camp. It's go to be about money (assuming that he is actually not dead-set on retiring.) Roaf knows he makes this offense go....

Hopefully the decision isn't completely final, yet. Carl seems to think there is still a chance, but he may just be in denial. Either way, we all knew it was gonna happen, just hoped it wouldn't happen until after this season. Still, Jordan Black is respectable at the position, and he's still growing into his potential. And Kyle Turley, if he can play up to the level he did before his injury, is nearly a match for Roaf. Of course, that's a big question, regarding Turley. I think the coaches were hoping to play him comparitively light this season to make sure he's back in good shape, rather than forcing him fully into the fray as a starter. I guess we'll know soon enough what level he's going to be able to play at.

Hopefully there's still a chance Willie will stick it out for another year, despite what his agent says, but if he doesn't, these things happen.

By "the position," I just meant tackle in general. If he's a lot better at RT than at LT, then presumably they will keep him there, and let Turley, who was pretty darned good at both sides, play LT.

While his getting hit by a bus comment is classless and probably shouldn't have been said. I kind of agree with him in this is just horrible timing for someone that important for the team to retire. Gives the Chiefs 0 opportunity to go get someone to replace him.

I don't think he just sprung this on them at the last moment. From what he says, they've known for quite awhile. It sounds like the team just didn't believe it was really going to happen, so they didn't prepare for his departure this season the way they should have. I wouldn't put the blame on Roaf.

Right now, about all we can do is wait and see what happens. If he is retiring, we'll just have to see how Black/Turley handle things. They might step up to the plate, in which case, a bunch of people are gonna feel kinda stupid for all the doomsday talk.

Sometimes the timing of life's events aren't convenient. I gotta believe Roaf was sure he was comming back as late as early May based on what he said in public. Bob Dole's thread in June was the first hint he gave that he may not be coming back.

As a fan of fottball first then a Chargers fan. It will be hard to see Roaf retire. He is arguably one of the best OT around, not only was he one of the best pass protectrs, but he was one of the best run blockers.

As a football fan I'm sad to see him retire, I like watching him play.

Roaf made it known throughout the offseason that if he was considering retirement if he didn't feel good enough to play. If he stays retired I'm going to give him the benefit of doubt that it is infact due to chronic injuries that haven't been able to heal. To me this is a much classier move than Priest trying to force management into placing him on the pup list therefore paying him for this year when he knows damn well he isn't playing. Thank you WIllie you have been a great and classy player. Wish you the best in future endeavors.
