CHIEFS AGREE TO TERMS WITH DT SHANE BURTON

Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the club has agreed to terms of a one-year contract with DT Shane Burton. As per Chiefs policy, no other details of the agreement were made available.

DT Shane Burton (6-1, 310) joins the Chiefs as a free agent after spending nine NFL seasons with four different clubs (Miami ’96-’98, Chicago ’99, N.Y. Jets 2000-01, Carolina 2002-03). Burton has seen action in 125 contests (49 starts) during his career, tallying 294 tackles (174 solo), 18.0 sacks (-97.0 yards), 43 passes defensed, five fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and three interceptions (47 yards). He also took part in three postseason contests, registering 10 tackles (five solo) and a half sack.

Burton played in 16 games (four starts) for the Panthers in 2003, recording 32 tackles (21 solo), 2.0 sacks (-12.0 yards), three passes defensed, a forced fumble and one interception (10 yards). He originally entered the NFL as a fifth-round draft pick of the Dolphins in ’96.

The Catawba, North Carolina native was a two-year starter at the University of Tennessee. Burton started at left defensive tackle as a senior in ’95 and finished with 46 tackles, 6.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery, one interception and five passes defensed. He was selected to play in the Hula Bowl following his senior campaign.

Siavii, Browning, Hicks, etc....the list of worthless turds on the DL is long. They should all be out on their ears. Teams will cut better players by the last cut down.

He's done.

His injury is supposed to be 6 weeks.

No way they keep him.

If he's hurt just put him on PUP.

Browning is hurt? That's too bad; he's at least been around for a while.

It seems like Browning has had three careers already. His first couple of seasons, he looked like a real find, especially when they were playing him at left end.

Then he had two or three seasons where he was ALWAYS hurt.

Then he's had another three or four seasons where he's been an undersized defensive tackle.

I wish they would've kept him at left end during his third career.

If he's hurt just put him on PUP.

He has been an excellent chief during his career.

Just this sort of injury could be it for him.

He won't play any preseason.

I'm rooting for him, but I don't like his chances.

He gets a bad rap here because he's not an all-world lineman. He's not spectacular, just does his job and plays wherever needed (inside DT, end) and is a contributor. They just moved him back to end, where I think he's better suited. Hopefully he'll be back.

I don't care who he is.

At least we're bringing in new faces to look at instead of clinging to the same losers year in and year out.

If we had taken this approach to the McCleons and Bartees of this team, we may have actually stumbled upon somebody better before now.

Spot on correct!

As for the previous poster(s) who claimed Browning was an "excellent Chief," your bars are set very, very low. Derrick Thomas was excellent. Art Still was excellent. Browning was servicable at his best.

We need to expect something better and we might actually get it.

From Herm today

Q: John Browning wasn’t out there today.

EDWARDS: “He’s got a back (problem). He’s out for at least six weeks. We’ll see what happens.”

Q: Is that one of the reasons you brought Burton in?

EDWARDS: “Yeah, cause (Browning’s) hurt and we lost an interior guy. Generally, you dress seven (defensive linemen). If it’s real hot opening day and you play a team that passes a lot then you’ll dress eight because of what you’re asking them to do. You never know how many you’re going to dress. I’ve always done it that way. No doubt about it.”

Q: What do you remember about Burton?

EDWARDS: “Very, very tough guy, smart guy. Plays well with his hands. The year I was with him he had about six batted balls. It was kind of amazing. He does a great job of getting his hands up and knock balls down.”

I said Browning was unspectacular. But you need unspectacular D-lineman who get the job done. He's not a guy you want out there all the time and he's not going to make big/flashy plays. However, he is good against the run and gets the job done. IMO, he's a very good rotational guy, and every D-line needs those types.

They signed 2 rotational guys in Reed and Edwards.....they're both alot younger and alot cheaper than John Browning is.

Quantity over quality?

Quantity has a quality all it's own.

-Red Army training doctrine, circa WW2.

That said, it doesn't translate well to the football field, IMO.

With a rule change to eliminate that whole 11-man thing, I think it could work quite well.
