Redskins bolster secondary, sign Edwards, BattleSportsTicker
ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins continue to make moves to bolster their secondary, signing safety Antuan Edwards and cornerback Julian Battle on Wednesday.
The additions come two days after the Redskins acquired cornerback Mike Rumph from the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Taylor Jacobs.
The Redskins were left shorthanded in the secondary after starting cornerback Shawn Springs underwent surgery to repair a minor abdominal muscle tear on Tuesday. He will be sidelined three to six weeks.
Edwards, 28, has played seven seasons in the NFL with Green Bay, Miami, St. Louis and Atlanta and started 32 of 72 games. He has compiled 225 tackles, seven interceptions and three sacks.
Last season, Edwards appeared in four games with Atlanta, including one start, and recorded 14 tackles.
Battle is only 25, but spent last season on injured reserve with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
A third-round pick of Kansas City in 2003, Battle appeared in 26 games, including one start, with the Chiefs and recorded 14 tackles and three pass deflections.
The Redskins waived offensive lineman Jonta Woodard and defensive back Chris Hawkins to make room on the roster for Edwards and Battle.
