Aug 28, 2006, 1:25:50 PM

Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the club has made 16 transactions in order to comply with the NFL’s first mandatory cutdown deadline. The Chiefs have trimmed their roster to 75 players.

The Chiefs placed S William Bartee and RB Priest Holmes on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List (PUP). Kansas City waived CB Jerald Brown, WR Kyle Brown, DT Arrion Dixon, TE Robert Docherty, G Steve Franklin, G Peter Heyer, WR Darrell Hill, TE Adam Johnson, G Tyler Lenda, WR Scott McCready, CB Justin Perkins, LB Nick Reid, QB Jeff Smoker and WR Craphonso Thorpe.

Holmes has started 61 games for the Chiefs, rushing 1,275 times for a club-record 5,933 yards (4.7 avg.) with 76 TDs and catching 246 passes for 2,360 yards (9.6 avg.) with seven scores. He originally joined the club as an unrestricted free agent from Baltimore in 2001. He has played in 109 career regular season contests (80 starts), carrying the ball 1,734 times for 8,035 yards (4.6 avg.) with 86 TDs and catching 334 passes for 2,945 yards (8.8 avg.) with eight TDs. The Fort Smith, Arkansas native has played in five postseason contests (two starts), including a start in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game vs. Indianapolis (1/11/04) with Kansas City when he rushed 24 times for a Chiefs single-game record 176 yards (7.3 avg.) with two TDs.

Bartee was a second-round pick (54th overall) of Kansas City in the 2000 NFL Draft. He has played in 87 games (31 starts), recording 226 tackles (177 solo), 3.5 sacks (-28.5 yards), 30 passes defensed two QB pressures and 56 special teams tackles. The Daytona Beach, Florida native produced five tackles in his lone postseason appearance with the Chiefs vs. Indianapolis (1/11/04).

Each team must finalize its 53-man roster on Saturday, September 2nd and can create an eight-man practice squad beginning on Sunday, September 3rd.

Thorpe is the biggest name on this list. I imagine that if he were a candidate for the practice squad he wouldn't have been released until the final cutdown.

I was hoping the Chiefs found a bargain when they draft Thorpe but I guess it wasn't meant to be.
