The queenmum just book me (and herself) on a 9-nine day cruise down the Rhine river in ealy March. If my calculations are right I get back to the US the day before the NCAA tourney.

First time to go to Europe.

My passport is lost and expired. Do I need to find it to get a new one?

You don't need an old passport, but without it you have to go with the process as if you were getting it for the first time. Basically, take your birth certificate and a DL down to the post office.

I think bottled water and extra contact carriers would be sufficient.

I would think that having a lost passport would be a huge pain in the neck in these modern times. They don't like U.S. passports floating around. You should get this taken care of as quickly as possible.

And by the way, it's a longstanding tradition to urinate in the Rhine when you cross it.

Patton stops in the middle of a pontoon bridge over the Rhine River near Oppehneim to urinate on March 24, 1945. Said Patton, "I drove to the Rhine River and went across on the pontoon bridge. I stopped in the middle to take a piss and then picked up some dirt on the far side in emulation of William the Conqueror." Later, he sent the following communique to Eisenhower: "Dear SHAEF, I have just pissed into the Rhine River. For God's sake, send some gasoline." This photo is the edited version (Patton's urine stream has been eliminated by an Army censor).
