"Their stinger is a razor-sharp, barbed or serrated cartilaginous spine which grows from the ray's whip-like tail (like a fingernail). It is coated with a toxic venom. This gives them their common name of stingrays, but that name can also be used to refer to any poisonous ray."

Are stingray deaths even that common? At least among people that get stung? I only found one thing on it so far that said it was rare, but that was with North American stingrays... I'm sure the ones down there might pack a different punch.

is that normal in the summer in montana??

It was a very wet spring, which in turn produced a bumper weed crop. We had the hottest July and first half of August since 1934 with no rain which made for some very dry conditions. With that much fuel, combined with no rain and dry lighting, it has been a giant tinderbox around here. There are LOTS of fires burning right now around the state. The Derby is the second biggest burning in the country right now from the reports I heard yesterday. I had my Ford Super Duty and trailer rolling last week to go help a friend out who has a big ranch in the area, but by the time I got up there the fire had already made it within 400 yards of his house and the wind changed directions producing a back burn...........Lucky! I think he would have been ok because he has it clear cut around his house. The people that got burned out had trees right up to the front of their door step. (Stupid) I'm sorry, but if they are dumb enough to live in the middle of the mountains and not clear cut, I have a hard time feeling sorry for them. It's just mother nature doing what mother nature does on her time. It's not a matter of if a fires going to roll through, it’s a matter of when and how a person prepares for the inevitable firestorm. At this point in time, the Derby fire is only 20% contained.

This was a real shock when I heard in on the news today. The wife and I loved watching the guy. He was amazing with animals. Like others, I can't believe he hadn't been hurt or killed sooner.

Ah, man! This sucks, I liked Steve Irwin. Very entertaining character. Oh well, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

On a side note, I have to say that if I wanted someone to reassure me of the painlessness of a loved one's death, I don't think I'd ask his producer:
"It's likely that he possibly died instantly when the barb hit him, and I don't think that he ... felt any pain." Those words in combination don't exactly add much certainty to the equation.

I was holding my foot & staring at it wondering how it could have so much pain packed into it. That stuff oughta be illegal....

That stuff oughta be illegal....I've never been stabbed by a stingray (never been close enough to one), but I've been barbed by a catfish, and I know how intense that pain is. I imagine, though, that it probably pales next to the punch a stingray's venom causes, so I can imagine it is pretty bad.

Man I hate the ocean and I've never even been. Too much stuff that's all hidden with giant poisonous barbs sticking out and invisible jellys floating around waiting for you to swim into them. Even those little snail things can kill you. If I ever go diving it will be in a personal sub or full chain mail suit.

I'm really sorry for this man's death. He educated and entertained a lot of people including my hubby and sons who are really bummed about this.

Me, I thought the guy was really a hoot but I thought he was rather wreckless at times. The baby incident comes to mind. I feared he may end up one day like his comrad, Tim Treadwell, on the wrong end of an experiment gone bad. I think both men though brave were a bit too trusting of their own abilities to understand the animals they studied. In the end, their comfort level and knowledge contributed to their death instead of preventing it. Very sad and ironic.

Irwin and Treadwell were in NO WAY alike.

Irwin was definitely more conservative than Treadwell but that is relative, isn't it? In the end they both died doing what they love* and probably taking less precautions than they should have.

Irwin and Treadwell were in NO WAY alike.Irwin: "Crikey, she's a beaut! This girl could kill you in the blink of an eye..."
Treadwell: "They feel a kinship with me! They're such loving creatures!"

Irwin did some crazy shit, but he knew his stuff, and fully understood the beauty and danger of nature. Treadwell, on the other hand, had no real clue whatsoever.

That's probably because the average person has a much better chance of being on dry land, where lightning strikes occur, than of being in the ocean, where stingray attacks occur!

Dang... you ChiefsFanz are a cold-hearted bunch. 'Cept for guyz like Ultra Peanut who recognize that Irwin had a better chance of getting hit by lightning than getting a ray barb in his heart. There's about 1,500 stingray wounds reported in the US each year. Having a barb rammed through one's heart is an outlandishly improbable freak occurance. You can say the snake bites were his fault for handling them. You can blame us divers and swimmers for our stingray wounds because we tread on them. Irwin deserves no more blame than the rest of us do for his wound. He just happened to be one of the very few in history to be unfortunate enough to get his in the heart.

I bet some Aussies are glad he's dead, because they hated how he gave the wrong idea about australians. I had some friends from australia that just went on and on about how no aussies talked like that, that he was a disgrace and whatnot. Personally i didnt care what they thought, Croc man was really entertaining and at one point made me want to do what he did. Crazy ass is now in a better place though where he can't have any more fear of death, he can just jump in the crocs mouths now if he wants to.

I don't think too many folks, Germaine Greer and similiar whackos aside, are blaming Steve Irwin for his death. I do think there are folks like me who believe he gambled with life and finally lost. I've heard/read that he didn't carry emergency supplies such as anti-venom because he said his anti-venom was 'to not get bit.'

I guess in the end, he was right. He didn't need a-v for a bite. Still, it makes you wonder if he was traveling with adequate emergency medical supplies on board or on standby, just in case. Given what I've read and heard from him, I doubt it. That is what is making some people shake their heads.

Do tell doctor, what you can do for a stingray barb piercing your heart?

Say, Ugly Duck, what did you carry to stay alive underwater when in the presence of rays? A surgeon? An entire emergency room? Cardiothoracic surgeon? Podiatrist?

On the late night CNN news last night the guy had Steve's producer on the phone and asked him about that and the guy said he was quite offended at the news guys question.

If the thing was in his heart and he was 30 minutes away from a landing site for a chopper, then who knows how long of a flight to a hospital, I doubt he'd have made it anyway.
