View Full Version : What should I do while in Philadelphia?

I'm going to look around tourist sites, too, but figured I could get some feedback here...

I'm going to have a long (10 hour) layover in Philadelphia on a Saturday morning/afternoon in mid-October, and was wondering if any of you could recommend some good places to go (too bad the Flyers are in NJ that night). I've looked around on the internet, and it looks like it's pretty easy to get around. I'm not picky... restaurants, touristy places, museums, etc.

And if anyone wants to answer my stupid travel question so I don't have to call the airline... they probably wouldn't hold onto checked luggage for that long, right?

Help them clean the city. It needs a good housekeeping.

I was there yesterday, but thanks... they probably aren't going to say anything like "yeah, lots of people go [here], but we think it sucks because....". They even put a good spin on the A's museum.

I forget the name, but there is a Chiefs' bar in Philly. The owner has a Chief's shrine and it's a gathering place on game day. I'm sure it was posted about last year when we played Philly, so a search should turn up the name.

Holy crap, I forgot all about that place... I remember the thing on ESPN about it when DV went there. Can't remember the name either..... too bad I'm a day early, or else I could watch the Steelers/Chiefs game.

Of course there's Freedom Walk. That is a walking tour that will take you by the liberty bell, freedom hall and a few other Revolutionary points of interest. If you like things naval they used to have the USS Olyimpus and a sub open for tourists down by the docs. It's also quite a site to cruise down the highway and see the shipyards. Tons of Navy ships to be seen. I can't tell you the exact location but Valley Forge is nearby. And of course you have to get a cheesesteak sandwich.

Run up the steps to the art museum. One of my personal goals in life. They just put the Rocky statue back up there the other day.

As always, my number one piece of advice when visiting Philasmellphia is "try not to get your ass kicked." Please remember, everyone in Philly hates you.

Pick up some soft pretzels at one of those carts along the street. I hear those dudes wash their hands weekly, whether needed or not.

10 hours is not as long as you may think. You can take the train from the airport to nearly anywhere downtown, just ensure you leave yourself plenty of time to get back to your gate. The security checks at Philly were rather lengthy for me.

Thanks.. good to know. The airline's site recommends showing up 3 hours early for international flights, so with travel time between the airport and wherever, you're probably right... would cut it down to 6-7 hours.

It's USAirways/America West.... $500 roundtrip to London PBJ PBJ

Just remember, It's Always Surly in Philadelphia.

Rain Man and Borracho are both absolutely correct, I've never visited any city with residents as rude and hostile as Philadelphia. Here's an example from some years back, I'm with my son and his 11-12 yo basketball team, we're there for a tournament. After waiting a very long time for our food to be served, my son notices he doesn't have a fork and says to the waiter...

Son: Sir, could I have a fork please?

Waiter: Get it your self kid, they're over there.

Me: Uh, isn't that what you get paid for ?

Waiter: Too bad, I don't like waiting on people!

Me: But you're a waiter.

Things deteriorated rapidly from there. That story sort of sums up my experiences in Philly, needless to say I'm in no hurry to get back.
