Anyone from Omaha, or spend a lot of time there? We're taking the kids up to the zoo in a couple of weeks and have some other things planned. We just need to find some good places to eat. What are the can't miss local restaurants in the area that are also kid friendly?

I just happen to live about 5 miles from the Henry Dorly zoo. What type of restaurant would you like to go to?

The Old Market is cool. Downtown actually has lots of good stuff....including a nice children's museum. Other info is available here:

Sadly when I lived there I wasn't worried about where to go with kids, and now we just normally eat at my folks when we are up there. LOL!

Downtown has changed a lot in the 6 years that I have been "away".

I would reccomend the Spaghetti Works downtown for a nice family type of place. The Jazz Club has authentic caujin food (Crawfish are great). Closer to the zoo you have casio's steak house on tenth st. It's and old school italian place that has great atmosphere.

If you want to drive a bit, go out to west omaha. Village point on 180th & Dodge has several resturants. You can also go across the river to the casinos.

Also, if you're looking for KC style BBQ, right up the street from the zoo is Big Horn mountain BBQ. It's the closest to KC style I've had since moving back here.

I found the SAC museum at Offutt AFB interesting. Lots of planes and some neat exhibits.

As for places to grab a meal, sorry, no idea.

Definitely take the kids to the Children's Museum that's fairly close to the zoo. Downtown has lots of places to eat. Ted and Wally's has great ice cream. Out west is a Pizza Machine that I've heard is a great time for the kids...pizza and games. Cheeseburger in Paradise out west is good too.

That isn't at the Air Base anymore. I haven't been to it since they moved it though.

That's at Mahoney State Park now, isn't it? I've been to the park a few times, but never the museum.

I don't think The Max in Omaha is exactly the place he should be taking his children.

Yeah, that sounds right. Love the SR-71 they have there.

That's exactly where it is. It is a great facility now. You walk in and there is an SR-71 pointed right at you hanging from the rafters. They also restored a B-27 and a KC-97.

SAC Museum is right down the road from Mahoney State Park on North side of I-80. On the South side of I-80 is the Wildlife Safari, Henry Doorly Zoo's drive thru zoo. All three of those places are a bit of a drive from the downtown area but might be worth the drive if you have the time.
For food in the Old Market, you could try the Upstream Brewery, my kids like the food there and you have the added bonus of the micro brewery beer selection.

I haven't been out there in a long while, apparently. Do they still have the old B-36? Monster of a plane, and one of the few planes with both Props and Jet engines.

Sweet bird, but still not as sweet as the B-58. That thing was decades ahead of it's time.

Tons of good eats here. Lots of places for you and the wife as well, though I'm sure you won't have time for that if you have the kids.

Take an evening to walk around the Old Market and check out Freedom Park...it's awesome down in that area. The Omaha skyline is changing (We actually have TWO skyscrapers now...) and the down looks awesome at night. Definately check out the drive through Safari and the SAC Museum.

Food: out in Regency, there is the Kobe Steak house (one of those Japanese places where they cook at your table, but the put on a pretty good show. My kids love the place), Pizza Machine (pricey, but good for the kids I guess). Also, check out Vala's Pumpkin Patch on HWY 370. It's actually pretty amazing, although I have not been there in years since my kids grew up.

Have fun.

We pan on going to the zoo, the childrens museum and the air & space museum. We are actually staying in Council Bluffs, but can drive anywhere for a good or interesting local restaurant.

We aren't too picky on the type of food, we just like trying local or unique places that we wouldn't see in KC.

It looks like there are some good suggestions, I'll check them out.

There are alot of good places to eat down in the Old Market...and shops for your lady.

I can't remember the name of the steakhouse I ate at last visit, and there was a brewery that wasn't bad Either.

When I went last year they were restoring it again. But I'm sure it's still there.

[Shudder] My 4 year old has asked me to teach him to drive. If I see him stalking someone driving around the block, I'll know I've failed as a parent.

Was it Anthony's Steakhouse (http://anthonyssteakhouse.com/index.html)? Somebody already mentioned the Upstream Brewery (several locations).

Whatever day you go to the zoo, you could eat at King Kong or Zesto (maybe Zesto isn't open year-round). The King Kong by the zoo is a fast food place with zoo decorations. The Amazing Pizza Machine (142nd-ish & Q) is good family fun.

Sorry you have to stay in Counciltucky. :)

Anthony's isn't in the Old Market, it's in central Omaha.

I'd highly recommend Johnny's Cafe (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2829611-johnny_s_cafe_omaha-i), it's only a few minutes away from the zoo in south Omaha.
