Heres one of Betty, she's about 7 yrs. old. Caught her sleeping while sitting up on the couch.:D

And Max (otherwise known as Fatass), he's about 4 yrs. old.

Betty always acts like she's a little lady. Real sweet , big red eye lashes, real dainty like. Max, on the other hand is always raising hell when he see's another dog. Wanting to get in a fight. Like hes a real tough guy.

The funniest thing is when Max tries to eat out of Bettys bowl. Or plays a little rough with her or sometimes he just has to look at Betty wrong. Thats when sweet little 18lb. Betty opens a can of whipass and puts his 40lb. fatass in it's place. It's got to where most of the time all she has to do is give him the "I'm gonna kill you" look and he is suddenly stuck to me like glue.

He said he's really lovable and friendly with kids and cats, but his wife said the dog makes her nervous when it stares at her and she wants it out of the house. Unbelievable. People make me sick.

Anyway, attached is a photo of the dog that he emailed me. Sorry to bug you with this, but if you know of anyone...

When I first moved to Kansas City, I spent a couple of months going back and forth to Springfield to finish moving and to complete my last college class. Once I was done, I had planned to go to the shelter and adopt a kitten. I stocked the house with cat food, cat litter, cat toys, etc., then made my last trip to Springfield that Labor Day weekend.

When I returned, there was a little black-and-white cat sitting in front of my apartment door. I had to make several trips back and forth to the car, and she kept following me everywhere. I finally decided to take her in and put some posters up around the apartment complex.

I only received one call. A girl called and said that there was a cat that had been living in the basement of my building, and she and some of the other neighborhood kids had been going downstairs to feed her. She described my new roommate to a "T".

For several years after that, it was just the two of us keeping each other company in that apartment. She watched out for me too, I think. The man I'm about to marry is the only one that I brought home that she ever warmed up to.

She was small, probably never more than about 5 or 6 lbs. But she had all the energy and attitude to make up for it. She routinely beat up on David's nearly 100 lb. dog.

This past Sunday was my mom's birthday. I had planned to call her to wish her a happy birthday, but instead, I called her in tears. Being an animal lover who just lost one of her cats less than a year ago, she could understand what I was feeling.

David and I had stayed home to watch the Chiefs game, and I realized that I hadn't heard anything out of Oreo all day. After some searching, we found her lying under a chair, one of her favorite napping places. When I realized what had happened, I had to leave. David took care of everything else. He said that it appeared to have been something sudden, like a heart attack or something. It was as if she just went to sleep and didn't wake up again.

---

She picked me. She looked out for me. She made sure there was someone else to take good care of me before she left.

Rest in peace, my pet, my companion, my pocket-sized guardian angel.

Damn, nobody else has any snakes? Here is my Northern Pacific Rattlesnake, Hannibal. He was a great pet. I loved to watch him eat. He got an infection in his venom gland and I had to take him out back and shoot him.

Next is Socks, or Fatass as I used to call him. He was my best buddy for 12 years. I had to have him put to sleep on October 6th, he was dying from congestive heart failure. It's still hard for me to sit at the computer and listen to the Chiefs' games now. I really miss him alot.

3rd is my Grey rat snake, Ozzy as he is finishing up a mouse. I caught him in the hallway at work a couple of years ago. The mother had it's babies in the building and security was going around killing them. I grabbed him and took him home. He is the only snake that has never bitten me, besides my rattlesnake. I think he got used to me hand feeding him since he was only a couple of days old.

Lastly is Alpine. I got her when I worked for a veteranarian 10 years ago. Her owner brought her in after backing over her with the car. She was only 4 months old at the time and her right front and left rear legs were absolutely crushed. the owner didn't have the money to try to save her, so I asked if I could have her. Needless to say, after successful surgery to repair her legs and a long recovery, she has turned out to be one beautiful "little bitch"(that's her nickname). My mom stole her from me when I bought my house. I got kicked out, but the cat stayed. Lol.

My parents got her from the shelter when she was 3, and apparently the previous owners didn't want her, that's why she was up for adoption. The shelter was running low on space, so she was a few days away from being put to sleep before we claimed her.

No, we got the schnauzer (Chuey) a year after Ecko. They get along great. Chuey terrorizes the hell out of Ecko and Ecko puts up with it. Every once in a while Ecko puts Chuey in his place and lets him know who rules the roost.

My wife and I get a lot of laughs watching them play.

Yes and No,

Sad story this dog... it was my grandparents.. dog.. but my grandma has been battleing cancer and other problems such as chronic pneumonia, and gangrene in her foot and had to be amputated... she is doing well and is getting better but its a very up and down thing with her health.. my poor grandpa has been toting this dog back and forth between newton and topeka... when he is at the hospital she has just been stuck in the taxi all day long.

anyway..

finally they asked if someone could take care of it because of the whole situation and i reluctantly agreed as i dont want to take my grandpa's dog away from him.

anyway..

we got her late last night and her hair was all matted really really back... we took her to get cleaned up and they said she might have a small hernia... she is enjoying her new found freedom in my house with no carpet... yet still depressed from leaving my grandpa..

well, I was doing pretty good until I read this. sorry for you loss. I havent had a pet for a few years, but the last one I had was an australian shepherd for 17 years. She was the best dog I ever had and we lost her in 2002. God has it been four years? We picked her up when in the late summer, before I started 6th grade. All that time, all that life and memories we shared. I would rush home from school and spend the afternoon and weekends with her chasing rabbits in the field and brush. My parents have about 100 acres along with all the neighbors land that I had permission to be on, so it was about a two mile wide by three mile long tract of land. Forests, ponds, prairie grass....great opportunities and endless summers.

I would take her out to hunt mice and rats. I would just stand and watch her track down the next mouse. She would stand there, cock her head to the left and right listening. All I could hear was a slight wind, a meadowlark here and there....but she was picking up on what was underground. All of a sudden she would leap into the air and pounce on the grass, digging furiously into the ground. Yipping and growling she would stick her muzzle into the mouse hole, with deep inhales she would be infused with the mouse presence in that hole. Sometimes I would help her dig out that hole and pull out the mouse nest.

All winter long, through ice and snow, days were spent sledding and chasing dreams of summer. She was the most loyal dog I had and friend I have ever had. She would always be waiting for me when I stepped off the bus and was confused when I started driving to school, but would still be waiting for me at the garage when I returned.

The years seemed to flash by after graduation and my days were spent working long hours. She seemed to realize that our times were cut short. But yet she was always ready to go run, fish, play catch or frisbee.

Then when I moved out it really took the toll. My apartment wouldnt allow dogs and mom had grown attached to her so she stayed at home. But she still wouldnt sleep or eat much until I was around.

She suffered a stroke/heart attack around Christmas in 2001. She just wasnt the same after that happened, which most pets/people arent. Whenever I came around she would perk right up though and would ignore whatever pain she was in just to spend time with me. I knew it wouldnt be too long though, because mom said when I would leave she would just go back over to the fireplace and sleep.

Mom catered to her needs as best she could, but in 2002 when I was having a real shitty day at work I received a call. Mom said she took her over to the vet because she wasnt moving. Her eyes would be looking around the room, but she couldnt move her body. The vet said she suffered another stroke that was worse than the first one. She wouldnt be coming back from this one and had to put her to sleep. I couldnt be there. I should have been there to hold her paw when she left this world, but everything happened so fast and from what the vet and mom said she was suffering. So they put her to sleep.

They buried her in the backyard, near the barn where we spent time and time again...a boy and his dog...linked in memories, never to be replaced, never forgotten, and forever cherished.

Great post. Great story. It made me cry, I can relate, I hope you're not BSing.

Take a guess Lzen you'd probably know as much as we do. As I said our vet picked her up as a stray.

From the looks of her though I call her a borderman; half border collie, half doberman. She has the body and color of a dobie but the fur and mind of a border.

It's funny though because she loves to hunt mice exactly the way redrum described. Right down to cocking her head and leaping into the air.

on the bright side, since this thread was bumped;
After years of begging and nagging and pleading and bargining, etc etc. My wife is finally ready to look at dogs.

We spent the last few weeks discussing it and the last couple of days about what breed. She wants smaller toy dogs, of course, but I got her accepting the idea of a chocolate lab. so the search will begin and the process (while slow as she adjusts to the idea) has officially started. I called one ad today already.

I'm happy and thought I'd share, pictures to follow as they become available......

I had two bearded dragons that I raised since they were really small, they are awesome pets and very docile and fun to watch. They eat a lot of crickets though I was keeping about 2,000 crickets in a 50 gallon fish tank to supply those little guys, they are eating machines. A note crickets are terrible to keep they smell and I hate when they start shedding its pretty gross looking. We have 4 dogs my dog is a miniature schnauzer AKC Bred, I have had a chameleon (very boring), carnival fish that die in a few days. I have had horses, chickens, sheep and a bunch of different animals. But dogs are top on the list there is nothing like coming home and having your little buddy greet you at the door.

She is still new to the sport, that is why you see baby gates on either side of the jumps.

She is blazing fast, but without the baby gates, she always runs the return route outside the baby gates.... I guess she figures it is quicker that way. lol

She was in an exhibition only, she has not been asked to join a team yet.... I need to get something together at my house so she can practice staying inside the jumps.

Today my wife took neighbor cat to the vet. He had a bite on his right paw and couldn't walk on it. We think he belongs to somebody in the neighborhood, but we're not really sure about that. He doesn't have a collar. He's been around the neighborhood for about 3 years, and lately he's been hanging around on our back porch, limping around since Wednesday.
This morning I wrapped a towel around him, put him in the cat carrier, and wifey whisked him up to the vet. He was fine in the carrier, quiet in the car, fine in the vet's office, and OK on the vet table. When the vet walked in, wifey said he went crazy cat. Took two vet assistants to corral him, had to sedate him. He pooped on the vet, the assistants, the table... wow.

That'll cost us extra...

Anyway, they clipped his nads, he was negative for feline HIV (thank goodness) and he'll come home tonight. I'm running out of places to stash kitty cats, so he'll have to convalesce in the garage for about a week. We have to give him antibiotics in an eyedropper. That'll be big fun. Cat Rodeo.

I don't think he's ever been to the vet before. He was scared out of his cat mind. He's a good kitty, very onery, but lots of fun. Hope he'll be ok in a week or so.

Wifey is paying the vet bill. So she's the crazy cat lady.

Heh, my poor cat has pretty much lived in the basement since I got my 2 boxer pups last Winter.

Heh,our 18 year old Siamese is not taking to the new kitten well at all, thank god she's been declawed or the kitten would be a freakin' bloddy mess by now.

we put all the cat stuff upstairs in my wife's bathroom, the cat just came down for the first time, last night. Logan (the dog's name) was trying to play with her, but she just looked at him like, "WTF are you doing sniffing my butt." then she hissed and ran away.

It's an esp made ltd wa-600. basic lp shape but they had to change the horn for all guitars being imported to the U.S. because gibson sued them. If you look close you can see it's pointier than a gibson made lp.

it's a nice guitar though. mahogany body, maple neck w/ ebony fretboard, JB/'59 pickups. the only thing I don't really dig is the lamb of god flag inlay but oh well... I liked the specs. :)

This is probably my favorite all-time shot of my dog. She's literally sitting there looking for the neighbor's cats to show their furry little delinquent faces. But, she's too lazy to sit, and far too lazy to keep her head in the air, so she finds the perfect position to rest it on the windowsill.

www.diamondspuppies.com (http://www.diamondspuppies.com)Awesome. I've only really had dogs as an adult. Both have been Golden Retrievers. I currently have Otis, a 1 and a half year old. Bar none the best dog that has ever lived.

He has a ton of energy, but also is fine with lying around the house with me. (Currently is napping at my feet.) Easy to train, great house dog, and the best personality you could ask for.

I take him for walks to and around campus about twice a week and then to the local dog park another two times a week. College girls seem to dig him.

I will check out Aussies. I'm a one dog at a time person for the most part, so hopefully I won't need to look into actually acquiring another dog for 12-15 years or better :grovel: but I have become dog lover since going to the dog park on a regular basis. Never knew so many awesome breeds of dogs existed.

God of Thunder

Awesome, I for years was a one dog at a time person.....When my first shih tzu (bentley) grew older, we got another dog, a collie (named Logan, who passed away this past october). My logan was hands down the best dog ive ever had, and it made getting over bentley a little easier (not that I didn't love bentley), but when bentley passed, and logan was still a puppy (around 1 year), we had to get another dog because he was so depressed. So my mom wanted another shih tzu, so we got hollie. When logan passed away in October, I decided to go ahead and get another dog because I missed having "my" dog since the shih tzu was my moms.....if that makes sense.

I have truthfully been to the dog park once, with cooper. I absolutely loved it, and once he gets a tad older, we'll go back!! I was really unsure about the breed, but now im absolutely nuts about them!

Aussies are the best. Owned them myself.

Not for the lazy. But if you'll put forth the effort to exercise them, there isn't a smarter, more loyal breed. Protective as well. One of my favorites.

I have an Australian Blue Healer. He is about 10 years of age now. Getting grumpy too! But still as playful as ever. He doesn't care if he's about to die tired, he will play fetch!

Blue Healers are a very smart, playful, loyal, and protective dog, just like the Red Healers. Will not cuddle with you for more than 3 minutes. Blue Healers hate, and I mean absolutely HATE, their feet being touched. I would recommend them to any one looking for a dog.

I also have a very fat Tabby Cat. She is the official paper wait of the house. She will give up a nice comfortable, soft blanket for papers on the hard-wood floor!

I also have an Australian Cattle dog at my grandfathers house. Very playful, but often not as smart as my Blue Healer. Great breed for cuddling with.

Rhetta.
She’s a Catahoula.

History
One theory as to the origins of the breed states that the Catahoula is thought to have descended from "war dogs" (Mastiffs and Greyhounds) brought to Louisiana by Hernando de Soto in the 16th century. Dogs left behind by the explorer's party were interbred by the local natives with their domestic dogs.
The idea that Native Americans bred their dogs with or from red wolves is not supported by recent DNA work. Several recent studies,[5] have looked at the remains of prehistoric dogs from American archaeological sites and each has indicated that the genetics of prehistoric American dogs are similar to European and Asian domestic dogs rather than wild New World canids. In fact, these studies indicate that Native Americans brought several lines (breeds) of already domesticated dogs with them on their journeys from Asia to North America.[6].
There is a plethora of published sources detailing the domestic dogs found in prehistoric archaeological sites[7]. Clearly, the red wolf was not the only canid located in the Mississippi River Valley before the arrival of Europeans. There were also foxes and grey wolves as well as various domesticated Native American breeds.[8][9][10][11][12]
In the 1800s, French settlers arrived in Louisiana with their Beauceron. They told of strange looking dogs with haunting glass eyes that were used by the Indians to hunt game in the swamp.[13] It is thought the Beauceron and Red Wolf/war dog were interbred to produce the Catahoula. The word 'Catahoula' is actually a combination of two Choctaw words 'okhata', meaning lake, and 'hullo', meaning beloved... or a French transformation of the Choctaw Indian word for their own nation, 'Couthaougoula' pronounced 'Coot-ha-oo-goo-la'.(Don Abney)
Jim Bowie and brother Rezin Bowie, who spent much of their youth in Catahoula Parish are reported to have owned a pair of Catahoulas. It was said that they would sleep with a Catahoula at their feet.[14][15] During the early 1900s, Teddy Roosevelt used the Catahoula when hunting. Louisiana Governor Earl K. Long had an interest in the breed and collected them.[15]
In 1979, Governor Edwin Edwards signed a bill making the Catahoula the official state dog of Louisiana in recognition of their importance in the history of the region.
