"CHECK TRANSMISSION"
My wife has an 02 Ford Explorer and just got the above warning on the message center. Any ideas? Am I just f*cked?

I suggest you check it.

/shrug. I'm not a mechanic though. Check the fluid.

Um, that's pretty self-explanatory. Crawl under the car and check and see if the transmission is still there.

You can not check the fluid in these trannys. They're just like my 06 Mustang; neither one has a dipstick. I just had a new filter and everything put on about 20,000 miles ago though. I doubt it's low on fluid. I guess I'll have to take it to the damn shop. :banghead:

Ford Explorers are notorious for having transmission problems. They aren't know as "Exploders" for nothing.

Take it to a shop that has the proper analysis computer.
Short of filter and fluid changes, automatic transmissions aren’t something for the shade tree mechanic to be mess’n with.

Exactly. It's not a matter of if, but when the trannie will implode on each of those things. You have to love the Ford "Exploder."

Yup. ‘Cept in the Ford vernacular it’s pronounced “Check Transmission”. ;)

Take it to Autozone and they will check the code for you. I had the same thing happen in my 99 Escort with 70k miles. I ended up having to pay $2000 for a new tranny. I know, it sounds funny to put 2k into a 7 year old car that wasn't really worth 2k new, but it it is great shape and gets 35 miles per gallon, and is paid for.

Start by checking the fluid level.

You might then consider changing the tranny fluid and filter.....see if there are any metal shards or flecks in the bottom of the pan.

thats why some people call them exploders

Take the pan off your transmission, wearing a glove of course grab hold of the front gear. Have your partner start the car and put it in reverse. If you are able to hold the gear from turning then your tranny has problems.

Uh-huh. One screw up with that move and the guys new handle is going to be either stubby, or Jimmy three fingers.

Yes, the second part of that was, if you are unable to hold the gear from moving, then you should immediately call for an ambulance.

Yep since it is a Ford you must have passed 50 thousand miles-time to get a new Trans.

I would say disable the Trans light and sell to the first Stoopid Ford lover that comes along that give you the cash you need out of it. Buy a foreign car next time.

Disguise & Sell: I'd feel too guilty
Buy Foreign: Hell no! I love my Mustang and this Explorer has been a great vehicle for us too. This is the first problem we've ever had with it. I've got an appointment for next Wednesday and I'll let everyone know what I find out.

That’s not realistic advice. Check your states “Lemon Laws” and you’ll see they don’t just apply to dealers but also individuals.
I’m sure, or at least hope, that those give’n ya that kind’a advice are be’n sarcastic.

Well I took it to the shop on Wednesday and they dropped the tranny pan and checked the filter etc. They said the filter looked brand new, the magnet in the pan was almost completely clean and everything was in great shape as far as they could tell. By their best estimation they thought it was probably just a little low on fluid based on how much drained. I asked them to go over the vehicle and tell me if there's anything else that may need repaired soon. The front end was in great shape. They pulled the spark plugs and they were clean. Checked all my sensors that could be easily pulled and they were clean & good. The only thing that they found was that it needed rear brakes. So I ended up getting off for less than $200. I felt good about that because my wife costs me thousands per month for the same thing :)
So screw you bastards that wanted me to dump it for a foreign car :D

Almost 85K but we purchased it from the original owner and it has always been well taken care of.
