Christmas present for my soon-to-be 12 year old son.
He wants one, and his not-so-hip dad has no freaking clue about them.

What model does he need? Or should I say, what model will be good enough for him without breaking the bank? Who has the best prices?

I know somebody else has already answered all these questions.

Thanks!!!

I'd Go with the 2 GB Ipod Nano, the best quality for the cheapest price.

Last I heard, the PSP was $199 and has no memory on it. So another $70 for a memory stick. How is this better?

I think that the Video ones have a hard drive and the nano's use chip storage (much faster)

You don't need an ipod. In fact I'm sure you can get a better value for the space with something else - probably something that plays FM radio too (mine doesn't).

I felt more or less trapped into getting one because I have been using iTunes for a long time. My music was in m4 format, some protected and some not, but I couldn't find any other players that said on the box they would play these files, so if I went with a player that was low cost, I may have had to spend (many) hours importing my entire music collection again and lose those few tracks I actually paid a buck for.

Instead of pay the full iPod tax, I got on the store on Apple's website and bought a reconditioned 2 GB nano. $100 instead of $150, looks great, works great, plenty of space for my needs. You would never know it wasn't brand new when I got it out of the package. Good value.

my daughter wants a pink ipod. do they make 2g pink ipods? I've only seen them in the 4g and she doesn't really need that much. But it "has to be pink daddy."

According to their website, no.

I would guess they decided to not make pink in the lowest size because they could get people to upsize just to get the color. :p :banghead:

I found the 30 gig with video is a very good product for a great price ($250)

Everything else I found cheaper was also less than 10 gigs, but was only cheaper by 50 or so bucks.

Pastormike recently bought a Sandisk e260 4GB and highly recommended it, so I bought one 2 weeks ago (my first-ever mp3 player) for $169 at Wal-Mart (and of course they're even cheaper now). Haven't had a problem with it. It was $30 cheaper than the iPod.

I have never looked at anything with that much storage. But from what I've experienced, I think Ipods are all overpriced. You can find quality off brands for a lot less. I guess I'm just a bargain shopper. I hate overpaying for stuff.

I use the video all the time. I just got the highlights from Thursday's game through iTunes(watched it while waiting in the car line to pick up my daughter.)

I rip my DVD's using Handbrake, and keep about 4-6 movies on the iPod at all times. I subscribe to a bunch of video podcasts (VOD Cars has some decent stuff, Flash TV is great, Trailtapes MTB Videos is good, and there are a bunch of others out there.) If my piece of crap DirecTV DVR decides not to record Heros, I just plunk down $1.99 and get it on my iPod.

You can watch your video iPod on your TV using a regular phono to RCA video/audio cable. You don't have to buy Apple's product, just plug the yellow cable into the red and the red into the yellow(sneaky by Apple.)

I also put my home videos on it.

This morning I got to show my Purdue Boilermaker fan co-worker the clip of the Bonecrusher hit on the Williams punt return...

When you buy an iPod, you buy not only the device, but the flawless integration with iTunes. There simply isn't another device that offers the whole solution as well as the iPod does.

This is the very reason it has been so successful. If there was no iTunes, the iPod would have died years ago.

You get what you pay for? :hmmm:
