Olinemen back then were small. The teams back then would just flat out get their asses kicked in today's game.

My vote goes to the 85 Bears. I dont care what anyone says thats the best football team, ever.

The 70's Steelers were the best team, ever.

69 Chiefs at #18
99 Rams at #19 ??? The specialized fluke team. No way in the top 20.

not
Only 255 ypg.

Though impressivedefensive stats ,passing was just not as precise back then. Lenny threw 4 more picks than TD's that year as well.

Of course when your D has a 3:1 INT to TD ratio, you are playing the pass pretty well.

You can't even know how good that Chiefs defense was simply by looking at stats.
You had to have watched them.

They were (for their day) big, strong athletic, and fast, and physically dominated opponents.

Curly Culp and Buck Buchanon might be the best interior combo ever.
Bobby Bell, Willie Lanier and Jim Lynch are among the top LB groups ever.

And Johnny Robinson (57) and Emmit Thomas (58) had a combined 115 ints in their career.

The 70's Steelers were the best team, ever.

And the one people overlook, because it didn't go to the Super Bowl, was the 1976 Steelers, who had a phenomenal defense that really picked it up when Bradshaw went down injured. They started out 1-4, but then won their last 9 while giving up a TOTAL of 28 points over that span. That included FIVE shutouts, including THREE IN A ROW.

They lost to the Raiders in the AFC title game, but that D was mind-boggling. Nine guys on that D went to the Pro Bowl.

I can't wait. Watching some of those clips gives you chills.

The piece on Johnny Robinson made me wonder.....has anyone heard as to his health condition?

I know that he had a pretty severe stroke back in 03 or 04. I would be curious to know how he's getting along.

Boggles the mind that neither Johnny nor Emmit are in the HOF, not to mention SEVERAL other Chiefs players from that era.

The same guys won four SB's, IIRC.

They suffered a couple key defensive injuries going into the playoffs.
They still gave the Raiders all they could handle.

Otis Taylor and Jim Tyrer.

Yep - Or even Ed Budde.

My dad always contends that if the Chiefs could have beaten the Fins in that '71 playoff game, and beaten the Cowboys in SuperBowl VI, most of those guys would be in the HOF as well.

In effect, it would have all but eliminated the "AFL" excuse that many of the HOF voters carried at the time.

I agree with him.

That would have put them in 3 of the first 6 SBs, with(had they won) 2 wins.

They would have been considered nearly Dynastic.

I believe we were one of the teams they rolled during their shutout stretch. I was at the game. 42-0.

I was thinking he broke it in the Superbowl too, he only had the one little place kickers bar.

It was entertaining. I'm only 22 so I had no idea about some of the things that went on during that year. Man, Lanier owned the Jets.
