Just an FYI, in case anyone bought the big 14-disk edition...

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa129.html#dr1

(LATE UPDATE - 11/27/06 - 8 PM PST)

Okay, folks. Here's Warner's official statement on the Superman discs:

"Bonus content was omitted from the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the 14-disc Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition. Furthermore, disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition did not include the Dolby Digital 2.0 mix. Neither disc is known to be physically defective in any way.

Warner Home Video wants to extend apologies to all of our loyal Superman fans who've waited so patiently for these great collections and has taken immediate steps to correct these errors with the intention of standing behind our product 100%.

Replacement discs can be obtained by calling: 800-553-6937. The exchange program applies only to purchases of the Superman III Deluxe Edition in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition and to disc one of Superman: The Movie Four Disc Special Edition, available as a single title, as well as in The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection and in the Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition."

Just so you know, we're trying to find out if and when future corrected sets might arrive in stores, and if this replacement program will work for international customers (who may have purchased the R1 sets via Amazon) as well. We'll let you know when we hear anything on these issues.

Stay tuned...

I picked up the Donner Cut of Superman II last week. That was awesome. And since I already owned the original '78 Superman, I now own the only two worth buying.

III, IV and the new one all suck.

3 and 4 did suck, but I thought Superman Returns was good. I had the 4-disk set that came out a few years ago, but they just released the 4-disk original and 3-disk #2, as well as the original cartoons (I'm a completionist, gotta have all of them). When I went to Best Buy I realized I was going to spend more on just the things I wanted than it would cost for the 14-disk set.

Mine should be arriving today, then I can call the number for my replacement disks. I suppose they expect you to send back the ones that were missing content at your own expense though right?

Yeah... I just got off the phone bitching at a supervisor that I spent $60 on THEIR defective product and I have to give THEM back part of their defective product before I can get the fixed one... I call that bullshit.

EDIT: No, you don't have to send the defective ones back at your expense. They'll send an envelope, you put the bad disks in it and send it back to them. Once they receive the envelope they'll send the replacement disks.

I just got off the phone with them myself. And pushed them a little bit further. He gave me the info to at least voice my displeasure to WB.

Here is the phone number to Frank Kraus, V.P. of Sales 818-954-6000 and here is his direct email, which I am certain will be monitored by his personal assistant, frank.kraus@warnerbros.com

Have fun giving him hell. I know I will.

I felt the same way but after I did the math for getting 1, 2, the Donner Cut and REturns, it didn't make sense to not get it for me.

Yes, I do want a copy of 2 plus the Donner cut.

Well, finished the Donner cut and found it to be much better than the original cut. There were some interesting twists and maybe a plot hole but overall I liked it very much. Makes for a little bit darker movie too. Took some of the corniness out of the original and gave Superman a more selfish side.

The last scene between Reeve and Brando sent chills down my spine. What an upgrade.

Of course there were dumb parts and plot holes, but this was a vast improvement over the Lester version.

Actually, the last Batman movie is the best superhero movie ever, IMO. The Spiderman movies are in the same ballpark, but really aren't all that close.

I own it, I keep putting off calling that number, probably do it tomorrow, hopefully. Not that either thing really seems to be a huge deal... I mean I want the correct disks just to have the right thing, but I can't imagine I'm going to watch the commentary to Superman III too many times, haha.

But there's so much stuff in that box set, it's ridiculous really. If you want to see something really hilarious, or terrible, go check out the "Superpup" TV pilot from 1958 on the "You Will Believe" disc. Doesn't take long to see why that thing never aired, haha. I thought the behind the scenes documentary for Superman Returns was excellent too. There's still so much stuff I haven't watched yet though.

And I liked the Donner cut, kinda rough around the edges in parts but they definitely put heart into the movie. The Jor-El material might be the most powerful sequence in any of the Superman movies, and they cut it out because of money, that's crazy. That made the whole movie for me. It was pretty good considering what they had to work with really, also kind of sad to know how great it would've been had Donner been allowed to finish it. I'm sure some people have kind of put the first movie, the Donner cut, and Superman Returns into their own little trilogy now. I'm glad Bryan Singer will be allowed to make the knock-down blow out sequel Donner was never allowed to make.

Batman Begins blows both Spiderman's away IMO. I am so looking forward to the next Batman movie just to see what they will do with the Joker character now. Topping Nicholsons performance will be tough.

I have to agree. Spiderman two was very good also.

I have not seen the newest Superman, but still remember fondly the first one, which I saw as a kid. Reeves was a great choice. Superman 2 I enjoyed very much also.

I need to revisit the original Superman II but I don't recall the line "The father becomes the son, and the son becomes the father" from that one. Kinda thought to myself, that was a nice addition to the Returns movie considering no one had ever heard that line before. At least I don't remember hearing it before.

SPOILER: Highlight the text if you want to see it...

Superman turns back time again... I didn't like it. With the big emphasis made about why Superman shouldn't do it in the first one and what a mistake it would be, why would he do it AGAIN? I understand the reason they did it is because Tom Mankiewicz thought that Clark Kent should never kiss Lois Lane, that only Superman should ever kiss her, and that's why they went with that ending (they scripted both, and Lester used the magic kiss)...

On another note, I just read this on that Wikipedia page...

In May 2001, Richard Donner underlined his anger over the lack of acknowledgement his (Lester-used) footage had received. Referring to a (Donner-filmed) scene in which Clark Kent is beaten up by a bully in a fast-food diner, Donner told the website IGN:

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
There was an interview, and the director who finished the picture talked about how important that scene was to him as a filmmaker, and – believe it or not – I'm in that scene, and I wanted to say, ‘You son of a bitch, you didn't do that scene. Not only didn't you make that scene, I'm in it!’ It was in the parking lot, as the camera crosses up to the diner. I couldn't believe it.

Batman > Superman
Batman doesn't even have special powers, he is just a highly trained martial arts and weapons specialist with neat toys. He doesn't even come close to Superman. Superman would just blow air at him and it would knock him over. Maybe if Batman could fashion a suit with Kryptonite fibers, he'd have a chance.

I think what he means is that stories about a flesh and blood human with some unresolved dark and twisted issues are more interesting than stories about a goody-two-shoes alien with ridiculous unlimited powers.

What did you guys think of the Donner cut of Superman II? I was disappointed. I had been led to believe it was virtually an entirely different film. It wasn't. A few scenes here and there, and an ending that didn't make sense. The Marlon Brando scenes were nice, but other than that....

Donner said on one of the commentaries in the box set... that the original ending of the first movie was supposed to be a cliffhanger. But somehow when they were going through the footage, I believe it was the studio... somebody wanted them to use their most impressive stuff to end that first movie, and that was turning back time. That's probably the only thing that's bad about the Donner Cut, otherwise I love the Brando scenes in the movie, well worth seeing.

And I got the replacement disks, I'm not sure that they made a huge difference, but I'm not going to spend hours watching the special features to Superman III. Plus I guess the audio mix on the first movie wasn't the true theatrical mix... I got them just so I have the "official" set, and it was free, so it wasn't like it cost me anything.

I really enjoyed it, but I will say I went in expecting it to be total crap. I like Donner, but I knew they had to do a lot of work to try and restore and piece this together, and I expected it to really be ugly and disjointed. But it moved along pretty well, and the Brando scenes were great, that was supposed to be the key to the whole movie.

No, the 1st disk is supposed to be the true 1978 theatrical audio mix... the 2nd disk is that 2001 version of the movie. But when they originally released the box set, they had the 1978 theatrical cut but not the right audio mix, apparently.

Perhaps I just expected the magic I experienced seeing it as a kid. I dunno. I thought Donner's ending didn't make sense. Why did he need to get revenge on the diner guy if that never happened?

I know, a lot of people didn't like that... but that's a classic movie moment, I would've been disappointed if they left that out. Plus, they never truly establish a previous history... it could just be Clark going in to teach that guy a lesson, because they establish he's always causing problems. A bit of a stretch, maybe, but that's a great scene. :)
