View Full Version : Why who QBs at Indy is so important

We have people out there saying it won't matter what QB starts at Indy, its all about running the ball. Here's a quote from a Planet poster with reply:

Right, that was AT Jacksonville. In the RCA dome, Jax rushed for over 200 yards, controlled the ball for 39:24, and LOST 21-14. The reason? The stellar passing attack that produced 106 whole yards and 2 INTs. There's your smoking gun, folks.

This is why who plays QB Saturday is the deciding factor. JMHO!

Yeah, we're going up against the worst rush defense anyone can recall seeing since the 2001-05 Chiefs defense, one of the highest octane offenses in the league, but the biggest factor is which mediocre QB we're going to have in the lineup.

This is what I find funny when people make half assed remarks about a positioned they never played before.

This is what you have in Green the man goes through his progressions quickly and properly, mans up when he needs to rush 5 yard he'll get you five yards . When Green had the line he had last year he was one of the best QBs in the league period. Now, the O-line is mediocre which in turn contributed to him being out for 8 games. Everyone who has been watching the games knows KC run blocks decently, but has a poor pass protection. Notice you haven't seen alot of seven step drops lately?
With Huard you have a QB who lives and dies with the success of LJ, he only goes through about two progressions then throws it away. Huard is a QB who won't lose you the game, but he won't help you win a game either if the team is down +7 points.

Green is THE MAN PERIOD

I agree. They put too much emphasis on the QB when they should have concentrated on what they were obviously supposed to be doing which was rush for over 400 yards.

It's pretty obvious which gameplan worked.

OK, here's the Sesame Street version:
Just banging LJ all day will NOT beat the Colts in Indy. Clever, mature and athletic play at the QB position is required. Damon Huard gives KC the best chance to win with that requirement. Jax has already established this by their 21-14 loss AT the RCA Dome when they rushed for over 200 yards but had 2 INTs and only 106 yards passing and LOST even after controlling the ball for 39:24.

Is that clear enough for ya?

Very difficult to boil down a whole game to a stat like that. You have to look at the play-by-play to see why a team really lost. Here are the key plays of the game, especially when the game is decided by only one score and the losing team DOMINATED in the running game.

First consider that Fred Taylor carried 21 times for 74 yards (3.5 ypc), while Jones-Drew gained 103 yards on only 13 carries (7.9 ypc). Do you think that the balance of carries between the hot back and the struggling back had anything to do with the outcome of this game?

Next consider that Jacksonville missed two FG (24 and 49 yds indoor). While less than the decisive margin, it certainly affected the situation and strategy during the whole game. Do you think that the missed FG could have contributed tot he outcome of the game?

Now let's look at a few key plays.

2nd and 4 at IND 34 (:54) B.Leftwich pass deep middle intended for G.Wrighster INTERCEPTED by J.David at IND 9. J.David pushed ob at IND 25 for 16 yards (C.Naeole).

Do you think the fact that Jacksonville elected to pass in a situation where they had a 7.9 ypc back and two downs to make a first may have affected the outcome of the game?

3rd and 1 at IND 31 (:57) B.Leftwich pass incomplete short right to G.Wrighster.

Do you think the play selection in this situation had anything to do with the out come of the game?

The fact is there were at least 4 other contributing factors to the Jacksonville loss in Indy. Your smoking gun is full of weed.

I don't agree. Green gives us the best shot. Its not like Gannon Girlbac where Trent is returning for this game from injury. Its a game of inches and some luck. I think Green gives us a 30% or so chance of winning Huard 25%. So really its going to be lady luck again if we do win.

Nice to see that KCJ has picked up the cf1963 torch.

Nothing like 4 or 5 new threads a day to talk about the SAME DAMNED THING.

C'mon guys, gimmee a break.

1. I just went to my first Chiefs game ever which was a dramatic, emotional close win to make it into the playoffs. I'm still excited about that.
2. I just moved here and after 35 years of rooting for the Chiefs I can call in to 610 Sports or 810 Sports and participate as a local - that's a blast for me. Also the TV coverage on METRO Sports is awesome.
3. We are IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!! That's a big deal from my foxhole.
4. My thread topics (like this one) at least posit a unique angle, ie, why the QB position counts, a previous game to illustrate, etc..
5. If you don't like what I am saying, ignore me. I'm not hurting anyone, and no mod has admonished me to post less/start fewer topix.

Soon the season will be over and you can all go back to insulting each other in brother love.

GO CHIEFS!!!!!

1. Awesome. I was at the win over San Diego earlier this season and I couldn't talk for 2 full days afterwards. I love game-winning FG's!
2. That is cool. I'd love to live in KC, even though I can listen to, and call, 610 and 810 here only 3 hours away.
3. I KNOW!!!
4. There's no need to make new threads, when they're all about the same topic. Just post your unique angles in the same thread.
5. I admonished you to start fewer threads, and I'm a mod. Therefore, a mod HAS admonished you to start less threads. :D

Fire away Johnny and Welcome to KC. Arrowhead kicks ass huh?

There were a few boorish fans screaming expletives over the head of my 13 year old daughter, but other than that most people are die-hard Chiefs lovers with exemplary citizenship (except the guy who mooned his buds after the game in parking lot  ). The bad weather, the wind/rain/snow could not hope to dampen my spirits that day. That game had everything - the post season on the line, playoff atmosphere (Jax needed it too), Huard came in and thrilled the crowd, LJ breaks records, Tony Gonzales got a bad spot or would have broken an NFL record, Jared Allen's MONSTROUS play at DE batting down balls, sacking QBs, etc..., Pollard's blocked punt, Mr. Hunt being memorialized on the jumbotron by KC legends, etc... Man it was like a whole season in ONE GAME. Then getting home and watching Nedney ice the Donks to get us in - oh man, that was just miraculous! So please, pardon me if I seem excited, this is as close as I have ever been to Chiefs nation since I became a fan in 1971 and I'm milking it for all its worth!

GO CHIEFS!!!!!! DESTROY THE COLTS!!!!!

Ok, so who do I have to pay from the Planet to drive to Indy to take out Peyton Tonya Harding style? I think we would have no problems with Indy if it was Jim Sorgi back at the helm.

:hmmm:

This is why who plays QB Saturday is the deciding factor. JMHO!
KCJ[/COLOR]

I'm not even going to enter into the who should play QB pissing match. What I find amusing is that KCJ claims that it is "JMHO", i.e., "Just My Humble Opinion".

I rather seriously doubt that KCJ ever in his life has had just a "humble opinion". Of course that's just my opinion, unhumble as it is.

LJ is always the best option against that porous D-line. If the Chiefs' Oline holds up then Trent will have a field day.

I hope you are correct, really. I would love for Trent to win a playoff Game with the team he helped establish as an offensive Juggernaut for 4 years. However, I believe the conventional wisdom is stack to box to stop LJ and dare Trent Green to beat you with his passing.

Another reason why it makes sense to spread the ball around to Michael Bennett and Dante, Kris Wilson, etc... Don't allow the Colts to do to LJ what Pittsbufgh and Arizona did to him (or what Solari did to him, take your pick).

Despite any disagreements we might have, I'm glad you got to experience Arrowhead for the first time in person. It's something that every Chief fan should get to do. I've been to well over 100 (maybe even close to 200) games there and the game day experience is something I NEVER take for granted.

Were you in there in time for the pre-game Hunt tribute? When Tony DePardo played Taps on his trumpet, I nearly started bawling.

The disagreements we have are fine as long as we are disagreeing about football. The problem comes when certain posters (not saying you, necessarily) make the discussion about the poster and not the post.

Unfortunately, I had no idea how long it would take to get off I-70 and park, so my daughter and I were seated like 2 minutes before the opening kickoff. As a professional Soldier, I have heard taps played in memorium many, many times. We all loved Mr. Hunt. While it may be questionable theology, I love the discussion about Mr. Hunt's influence from his lofty perch in heaven as a way of aaffecting the Chiefs unbelievably good fortune. That game Sunday was one of the best experiences of my life, and I was in Baghdad when we got Saddam. ;)

Just a question John....what makes you think we will have 2 picks?

I don't. I was just making the point that we run the ball all dang day and it won't be enough if we get the kind of performance from the QB position we have been getting lately. I countered that on another thread with Green's last performance vs Indy - 27/34 for 389 yds, 3 TDs, 0 INTs - a stellar performance. Bottom line, just running through the porous Colts D hasn't been enough for any team to beat them in the RCA dome, and we will also need a high octane passing performance or we're not going to keep pace with an Indy offense that averages 30 ppg at home.

That said, with Green's 16 turnovers (14?) in 8 games, two TOs is hardly a reach. Two TOs will probably put the game OUT of reach.

So basically we dont need Huard in there getting hit by Freeney... 5 fumbles lost in 8 games it pretty risky for a playoff game...

Freeny this year isn't Freeny of 2004. Huard's only turned the ball over half as much. That said, please check out my thread about Green throwing for 389 yards vs Indy in '04. I HOPE Trent has another huge game like that, but I haven't seen it all year, and some of that is Herm dumbing down the playbook. I still maintain Huard gives us the best chance of winning.

I was at the Game in Oct 31 of 2004.... What a great game it was.

maintain it all you want, we are just thankful we have Trent a proven Veteran in there to lead this team. I would be shatting my pants if Huard was starting..

All I can think about with Damon Huard is, the complete meltdown at Miami by him...

You know you guys are only remembering trent for his last mistakes. Well I am remembering Huard from his last game meltdown. Thank God Tony G is a tough guy, Huard damn neared ended his season in Miami.... Hung him out to dry to many times.

Chris Mortensen was on 610 Sports tonight as an "insider" and said all the league's smart people supported Trent Green as the QB that should start this game. He referred to the sportswriters, owners, coaches, etc... who do the MVP balloting and said outside of KC, there is no mention of Damon Huard as a possible starter for this game. Green has a huge rep outside this city that has eraned him tons of respect. He just better bring his 2004 self to the RCA Dome Saturday...

Well it is not like Trent is a bad QB, only a year remove from back to back pro bowl seasons. the only, only reason Trent doenst have a superbowl ring with the Chiefs is because DV ignored the Defense and kept polishing his offense....

Trent is a superbowl caliber QB, and the best to only Lenny in KC... BTW, if you remember Mike livingston played most of the season when the chiefs won the superbowl.. Dawson was hurt most of the year....

I will take my chances with Trent anytime any game...
