Where does a QOTF gain experience, from holding a clipboard? Doesn't every team in the NFL have a roster space for back up QOTF's? If there is no chance of ever getting in a game, hell even redrums Mom can hold a clipboard.

Haven't we had QOTFs' before that never panned out, or never allowed to be feed to the dogs?
Just curious.

Matt Blundin, Pat Barnes are the only two on the rosters I can think of....

I dont think any of KC's drafted QB's have panned out and that's a result of the curse of Carl drafting Todd Blackledge. It all started there.

Gannon, but he was old so I guess he doesn't count.

One of these days...this legend will be just as strong as the DV drafted Phillips legend or that DV didnt want Faulk, etc.

One of these days. I'll keep plugging away at it.

Do you know anything about football? Ever played? Not many rookie NFL QB's have been ready to play and win in the NFL. There's a HUGE difference in the complexities of offenses and defenses, not to mention the speed of the game. Just because a quarterback "holds the clipboard" during the game on Sunday doesn't take away from running the scout team, meetings, workouts and the offseason.

Look around the league. How many of the current starting QB's even played in their first year? Even Tom Brady didn't play in his first year.

The first great QB for the Chiefs was a backup who rode the pines for 5 years in Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Mr. Hunt and Hank Stram gave him a chance in the upstart AFL and he rewrote the passing record book. Once that precedent is established, its hard to change it. Look at the slew of vet QBs that have performed well here: Jaws, DeBerg, Montana, Gannon, etc... Grbac is the closest thing we've had to our own QBotF since Mike Livingston was here.

David Carr did...so did Vince Young, who is the NFL's greatest ever player to come out of college.

I've been around since '90 and the only ones I remember in that time frame are Pat Barnes and Brodie Croyle.

Bah, QBs aren't that important anyway.

EDIT: How could I forget James Killian?!?!?! I must be losing my memory.

Peterson doesn't draft quarterbacks because his coaches don't want to take time to actually develop someone. I thought maybe Herm would be different, but who knows?...

It was a rhetorical question. I know there are many QB's who played their first year but the scrapheap is larger than the successes.

I don't think we'll ever develop a QB with CP here.......we always trade for or sign some veteran when we need one.

Does anyone look at that list and really think "QOTF"? Four of those guys were second day picks, Elkins & Blundin were Marty's picks because they reminded him of a young Bernie Kosar. Croyle has the most potential out of all of them (successful SEC collegiate career, big games, solid leader) but his injury history and frame leave him somewhat questionable.

If Croyle can develop into a successful backup QB (like Huard this year), I'd be pleased. Anything more and I'd be ecstatic.

i heard someplace that no QB ever drafted under the current KC administartion has ever become a starter in the league.

i thought they also said hadn't "ever started a game" ... but i'm not sure.

I beleive Stenstrom started a game or two with Bears and maybe Matthews did with Jags, let me look it up.

Yeah, Stenstrom started for the Bears and Matthews started for Jags.

Does everyone remember the mess Carl made with Stentsrom (drafting and signing him, only to have Chicago pick him up on waivers?). I don't think the guy ever even put on a Chiefs uni.

WoW ... isn't it rather peculiar that almost everyone you hear talk about "building a super bowl team" says you start with the quarterback and yet we've only drafted 3 on the first day of the draft.

What's the big deal in wanting a home-grown QB? I don't want to pay a guy to learn while the rest of the team plays their butts off around him. Give me a QBOTY (QB of the Year) for just 1 year. Never, ever draft a QB. Way too much of a gamble. Much better to pick up a veteran at a budget price (Kitna, Garcia, etc.)
