Sarkisian closes in

Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Saturday at 8:57 pm

At some point in the near future, possibly this week, expect Steve Sarkisian to be named head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

Call it educated speculation, which is better than an outright guess, but something less than an a multi-sourced news story stripped across the top of a sports page.

Sarkisian did so well in his interview Monday one league source told me he thought Al Davis offered him the job then and there, although he also told me I'd better check it out before going with it.

Another source has told me on two separate occasions this week Sarkisian was the leading candidate, after both the Jim Fassel and Rob Ryan interviews.

Neither of these sources have spoken directly to Davis, but their information is usually reliable.

Sarkisian, in recent days, has gone underground. There are people I've talked to in Southern California who rarely have a problem reaching him, but now can't get him to return a phone call.

Open and chatty following his interview Monday with Medianews reporter Steve Corkran, Sarkisian is now unavailable.

Call me overly cynical, but it sounds to me like Sarkisian is acting in a way befitting a coach of the Oakland Raiders. Someone told him to zip it regarding his candidacy. He may have even been told to save it all for his press conference.

Hey now.... the last young unknown that Al Davis gave a break was Gruden, & he did OK. Took a crappy team & won the AFC title. We have those two elements in place again.... a young offensively-minded nobody & a crappy team. Things are looking up!

Oh yeah... he hired that youngster nobody Shanahan also...

An asst coach from COLLEGE? (okay USC is practically a pro team, they've bee nso dominant thepast three years, but c'mon. This further confirms Davis is off his rocker. (watch, they win the division next year)

He was one of our 'co offensive coordinators" there were some rumors of him getting canned.......

He did an alright job...I never thought he'd get a HC job so I see why he took it.

Good move. I'm tired of the recycling. Hopefully he makes the Raiders competitive. That being said, I hope he never beats the Chiefs and never gets ahead of them record wise.

How can they not? They'll have the AFCW's best QB next year, Damon Huard.

Supposedly this guy is a great young mind... not really a bad idea to go the 'unknown' route. Especially, with that franchise and the overhaul it needs on offense.

I don't care what anybody says, no self-respecting head coach canidate would take that job unless they got to hire thier own staff.

The offense is their only problem. They get that fixed they could be a legit threat.

No, more like being hired to be the CEO of a billion dollar company and then working in the mailroom.

So, OH, what do you think of this selection? I don’tI like the way AD is thinking.
He insists it’s 1969 and he can still coach. Why can’t he just die already!
He wants a puppet, not a HC.
And this guy is a poster boy for a "Bend over man".
Fassell has a track record, so does Martz.
BUT
They have also proven THEY can win, and Al doesn’t want anyone who can think, he want’s "servants" who listen and follow, (do their doom).
I’m just glad he didn’t give the nod to Ryan.
That man is where he was/is needed, doing a fantastic job, so why screw with what ain’t broke?
We don’t need a QB (well actually we do...BUT) we need an O line that can actually give our boy more than a millisecond between sacks to get rid of the ball.

Unless Rob Ryan is pissed that he was passed over and he bolts. Then the D may have problems too.
