Now lets take a look at how the #1 Offensive units have fared in the last 20ish years.

2005 Seattle Seahawks
-Lost to Pittsburgh in the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 7th

2004 Indianapolis Colts
-Lost to New England in the Divisional round of the playoffs
-Defense was ranked 19th

2003 Kansas City Chiefs
-Lost to Indianapolis in the Divisional round of the playoffs
-Defense was ranked 19th

2002 Kansas City Chiefs
-Did not make playoffs (8-8)
-Defense was ranked 28th

2001 St. Louis Rams
-Lost to New England in the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 7th

2000 St. Louis Rams
-Lost to New Orleans in the Wildcard round of the playoffs
-Defense was ranked 31st (last)

1999 St. Louis Rams
-Won the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 4th

1998 Minnesota Vikings
-Lost to Atlanta in the NFC Championship game
-Defense was ranked 6th

1997 Denver Broncos
-Won the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 7th

1996 Green Bay Packers
-Won the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 1st

1995 San Fransisco 49ers
-Lost to Green Bay in the Divisional round of the playoffs.
-Defense was ranked 2nd

1994 San Fransisco 49ers
-Won the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 6th

1993 San Fransisco 49ers
-Lost to Dallas in the NFC Championship game
-Defense was ranked 16th

1992 San Fransisco 49ers
-Lost to Dallas in the NFC Championship game
-Defense was ranked 3rd

1991 Washington Redskins
-Won the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 2nd

1990 Buffalo Bills
-Lost to the Giants in the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 6th

1989 San Fransisco 49ers
-Won the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 3rd

1988 Cincinatti Bengals
-Lost to San Fransisco in the SuperBowl
-Defense was ranked 17th

1987 San Fransisco 49ers
-Lost to Minnesota in the Divisional round of the playoffs
-Defense was ranked 3rd

1986 Miami Dolphins
-Did not make the playoffs (8-8)
-Defense was ranked 26th (28 teams)

1985 San Diego Chargers
-Did not make the playoffs (8-8)
-Defense was ranked 25th (28 teams)

What can tell?
-3 teams failed to make the playoffs, all of them had terrible defenses.
-10 of these 21 teams made the SuperBowl.
-6 of these 21 teams WON the SuperBowl.
-The average defensive ranking for those NOT making the SuperBowl was: 16.18
-The average defensive ranking for those that DID make the SuperBowl was: 6
-San Fransisco was just a POWERHOUSE offensive team.

Nice work and I guess it shows defense is 60 % of the struggle.

The really ****ed up thing about the Chiefs run is that they had the number 1 offense many years, AND had very few turnovers. Some of these #1 offenses turned the ball over a lot.

Balance is the key. A high powered offense will help a average to above average defense and a great defense can help a struggling offense. They synergistic effect occurs when both the offense and the defense are above average to very good. It's all about balance!
