That's not true, this is a VERY close race this year. I wanted to root for The Departed... but I really think Iwo Jima is gonna take it.

Departed is the one film I wouldn't want scorsese to win for. Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas all of those were better movies but since he's been passed over so many times they'll probably give it to him. Kind of like a lifetime achievment award.

Usually it involves putting three asterisks in front and behind the thread title name. Therefore this thread really isnt official.

the red carpet arrivals are sooo much fun.

I thought Reese Witherspoon looked the best. She looked phenomenal. As did the far from sex symbols Helen Mirren and Jodie Foster.

As far as the worst: Celine Dion wore a nice gown from the Vlassic Kosher Dill collection. And Meryl Streep wore vintage Salvation Army.

Best 3/4 dressed goes to Penelope Cruz who looked exquisite until the below the bump area when her dress turned into peach colored Puffs. Quite handy should her allergies start acting up.

Didn't the majority of Flags take place back in America? I don't know, that's just the impression. So maybe the battle scenes were filmed at the same time, but Iwo Jima was almost all battle, and my impression is that it was only a fraction of Flags.

I'm happy that "Departed" got it. It was my favorite movie of the year. I just didn't think it was going to pull the votes of Iwo Jima did. But I LOVED that movie, and I'm ecstatic for Scorsese to finally get his statue.

I wanted Little Miss Sunshine to win. But I want to see The Departed, and I'm sure it deserved it.

Departed was a very good movie and I am happy for Scorcese

Overall, I was surprised. I thought a lot of nominations shouldn't have been nominations while other movies got hosed.

Children of Men didn't pick up any Oscars, for which I am disheartened. It's ahead of its time and it shows. Sad.

Departed was good, but I didn't think it was the BEST picture of the year. Close, but I thought other films (Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth and some others) were better. Little Miss Sunshine was the best film for over half the year. It's just like 4-5 films came in the 4 months after that hurt it's chances.

Happy Feet over Cars?! WTF?

I would have liked to see Djimon Honsou win Best Supporting but cannot complain about Alan Arkin. Both were exceptional.

Scorsese obviously.
Whitaker obviously.
Mirren obviously.

I agree with you. I wish Children of Men had at least won for Best Editing for that long take that was just a single shot at the most climactic point.

I was really disappointed when Babel was nominated for Best Picture over Children of Men. I thought Babel was far inferior, and actually a very frustrating experience, while Children of Men had that same tone of desperation but it was also pretty entertaining.

I was also pretty surprised that Iwo Jima and Clint didn't win. I thought it would pick up either Best Director or Best Picture. I guess they figured Clint had already won enough and needed to spread some love to Scorsese.

Cars was good, but the animation in Happy Feet was just amazing. The stories were about equal, but the animation gap did it for me.

.

Yea, i was kinda shocked by that too.......but it was probably a little more innovative with the motion capture stuff than Cars was.

Cool to see George (Road Warrior) Miller get an Oscar..

I thought the Coca-Cola ads had better animated penguins than Happy Feet.

On a side note, someone on another board mentioned this:
Was it only me, or did Jack Nicholson say "I'm joking," after he announced The Departed as best flick and then look somewhat nervous quickly afterwards. Then the whole thing seemed a little confusing as the camera chopped back and forth...

Now that I remember the moment, it did seem extremely awkward with the camera cuts and stuff. Not saying it shouldn't/didn't win, but it did seem odd.

I thought CoM had to win either Editing or Cinematography. I loved Pan's but it didn't deserve the Oscar for Cinematography. Oh well.

Babel was an over-ambitious but politically charged, global "Crash (2005)". It was good, but it wasn't nearly one of the top 5 films.

Well, it was really Scorsese's night. And you know, he would have just been glad that his dear friend Thelma got another award for Best Editing. He deserved it here, there are no "gets it for the times we missed him" excuses. The Departed was a great film. It's a great thing to see a man so great at his art be honored for it by others in his profession.

Ennio Morricone's tribute, I think Clint Eastwood really butchered that introduction, and I don't see why Celine Dion had to sing words over Once Upon a Time in America. I would have preferred a montage of his films, and JUST OUATIA's score. But I shouldn't complain too much.

This was just a gimmie for Marty. The Defarted had a stoopid ending, lame script and should have lost to Letters and Eastwood, a far better film on every level.

Glad I didn't waste my time watching this political crap.

Absolutely. Clint's vanity prevented him from wearing glasses and prevented him from properly recognizing Morricone's geniuos. The way they did the translation was very awkward as well. Use some subtitles or something.
