View Full Version : Underrated Childhood Sports Heroes...

Ever have a childhood sports hero that never seemed to get the respect you thought they deserved? Those unique players that you greatly admired, but other people didn't seem to understand or appreciate?

One of mine has to be Ricky Watters... I wasn't ever a Notre Dame, SanFran, Philly, or Seattle fan in the slightest... but I had an amazing amount of respect for Watters' talents. I loved his style of running, and tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to mimic his running style in HS football.

I thought he was really talented, but I haven't heard his name in a decade or so.....

Who was your unsung hero back in the day?

You're gonna hate me even more but growing up in Blue Springs, Fred Patek lived two doors down from us and Paul Splitoff lived directly across the street. I used to play wiffle-ball with them, Cookie, George and all the guys. At this time, Split's kids Jamie & Jennifer were just babies.

It was a blast! And something I'll never forget.

Kenny Rogers?? 23 consecutive shutout innings in postseason baseball. Winning percentage almost 60%? The fourteenth major leaguer to pitch a perfect game?

Underrated??

I think you are misinterpreting the idea here....

Ryne Sandberg. I don't know why, but I always rooted for him even though I grew up in KC. I guess he's not underrated cause he's in the HOF, but I thought I'd mention him anyway.

Gary Fencik, '85 Bears. I was him in our 8th grade, off Broadway production of "The Superbowl Shuffle." All I remember hearing was, "Fridge" this and "Fridge" that.

Ricky Watters was from my home town. Harrisburg PA. And he was a total cocksucker to the people around here once he hit it big. Not judging anyone here...Just saying.

He got the chit kicked out of himself at a local club once. Good times.
