View Full Version : Recruiting CP help for my brother's band

I hope it's ok that I do this... if not a mod can feel free to delete the thread.

My brother is the lead vocalist of a band called "Jolly Roger" that is based out of Lawrence. They are taking part in the Deadwood Derby Battle 'O the Bands on www.lawrence.com and could use more votes. There are a ton of bands involved and the top 16 will play in a "tournament" over four weeks at 4 Lawrence bars. Currently Jolly Roger is behind 24 other bands... which actually has them in the top half I believe. So I'm assking for some help... if you don't mind.

You can vote for Jolly Roger at www.lawrence.com then click on Deadwood Derby. You'll have to become a member of the site to vote... which is free... but if it's too much trouble I understand. Voting ends March 18th and you're allowed to vote once per day.

I know you may not want to vote for a band you've never heard... so you can hear 3 songs at www.myspace.com/therealjollyroger

They're a very good... very hard rock band... incredible live. I know I'm biased but I think my little bro was destined to be a rock star.... btw... he's a member of Chiefsplanet but has only posted a few times. He says he's would like to make it back on here time permitting.

I know it may be weird to ask you to help support a band you don't know... but I know some of the other bands are "stuffing the ballot boxes" with friends and family so I don't feel too bad about it. Jolly Roger hasn't been together too long so they aren't yet as well known as some of the other bands. I just feel like they can have a chance if they can get into the top 16 and be heard.

Thanks for any help you can give them. I/they really appreciate it.

Is the thing on the far left a dude? The guy with the hat just doesn't fit and I'm guessing the one on the far right is a girl.

I listened to a bit of each song... not too bad overall.

Those are guys?
Yes... LeXXXis on the far left is the lead guitar player and Loach on the far right is the bass player. Very cool guys and good friends of mine. They used to be in a glam band called vibralux and they still carry that look a bit... believe me they don't care what anyone thinks about that.

Fundamentally, I'm not sure that anyone on Chiefsplanet other than Raiderrock could realistically be expected to vote for anything named after the Raider's logo.

Sorry.

They're really pirates.. they rape and pilage constantly.

Actually I don't know how they decided on the name. It about my brothers 8th band or so. They really are good live though. The recordings are home made so keep that in mind.

Just "a bit" eh? And, they shouldn't care what anyone thinks... but Loach needs to man up a wee bit.

Lawrence.com is an impressive project.

I tried really hard to do something similar in Springfield but the other business partner fell through. I really wanted to make that happen.

I seriously never thought I could dislike any look more than the skinny eyebrows on women...

...Apparently that look on men is even more off-putting.

Although that guy could get a job as a drage queen impersonating Anjelica Huston in a minute.

I think he's comfortable with who he is. He's very cool, nice guy and gets more poon than I ever have so I think it works for him.

I knew some of you guys wouldn't like their look... but they're friends of mine... my little bro is my best friend and a great uncle to my daughter. I'm proud of them all.

They're a rock band so what the hell. The parties they throw are the best ever.

Their look is horrible, the production is horrible and the playing leaves something to be desired.

That being said, the singer definitely has "something" going on. Great vocal tone (even though his vocals are buried on "Cure the Mood").

Are they opened minded or do they think they "already know it all"? It seems like with better production, some arrangement changes and a better drummer (or at least better rehearsed and a major dose of Beat Detective) some Indie label might give them a listen.

But Rock Stars right now? Um, no.

Can I join? I think I can be a important piece of the puzzle of that bad, and really help them out. I would like to apply to be this guy

Not to jack the thread, but here is my step brothers band. Maybe some of you guys have even heard of them. They are the Nodes of Ranvier

<img src="http://www.decibelmagazine.com/uploadedImages/Issues/2005/October/Features/nodes_of_ranvier.jpg">

They are pretty hardcore metal. Check out their myspace www.myspace.com/nodesofranvier

Man, poor beer me. Guy is catching shit left and right. The "look" of that band isn't anything particularly out there for the current metal scene, imo. They look pretty much like the shots in the paper for half the bands that swing through town these days.

And as for "Nodes of Ranvier"... what's up with the metal scene these days? These kinds of names are cropping up right and left. Do they sound like Ashes of Augustine?

Lighten up, Francis. They're trying to win a Battle of the Bands contest, not sign a record deal.

Thank you Dartgod. I appreciate it. Same to anyone else who took the time.

I should have known that posting this would call out more of the usual dumbassery the planet is famous for. It's funny, I actually thought people would be supportive whether they liked the band, the sound, the look or not. This place is always (almost) real good at giving support to something that is of personal interest to a member. That's the brotherhood part of the planet that I really enjoy. Sure, we give each other shit but I thought it was put aside when someone has a real issue they are interested in or ask for help with something.

If you don't like the band that's fine. Don't vote for them. Don't bother with posting on the thread. Easy enough. It always amazes me when people go out of their way to be jerks... although I'm not sure why anymore. It's more fun to be a judgemental asshole than to just shut up and move on.

Am I taking it too personally? Sure, probably so... but their are few things more personal than family. I've always considered this place an extended family but I realize now that's just not the case aside from a few friends.

Thanks anyway.

Oh, I won't hesitate to go out of my way to be a jerk. :D

I still voted though. I can't access MySpace from here at work so I don't have any idea what they sound like. I voted anyway.

Chiefsplanet has a history of skewing polls. It's what we do.

So let me get this straight, you should be able to post a thread about your brother's band, demand that we vote in their favor even if we don't like them - then get pissed at us for speaking out opinion about the band?

O-kay, anyone who puts themselves out there to be judged, should expect to be judged. As for me, I will never vote for a band to succeed if I don't think they should, based upon their sound. Having said that, we should also have the right to speak our opinion in this thread.

If I had posted any of my old band's music here and expected people to just support us if we weren't any good, they'd put me away!

As far as being an extended family goes, it's a family's responsibility to be honest to one another, good or bad.

Good luck with your brothers band beer me. It's good to support local bands.

Speaking of that, my son's band "Vedera" has recently signed with Epic and during their next tour will be playing at Starlight Theatre on May 1. They are opening for some band named "The Fray".

Support your local musicians. They appreciate it!
