I left Sheridan, WY yesterday morning like a bat out of hell after viewing the local radar on-line. I just cracked the hill and they were closing the roads behind me. A bunch of my co-workers are stuck in WY. Some places got 3 feet and it's still rolling hard. The storm from hell!!

Pretty calm here in in Edmond now... There are alot of powerlines down over by Mercy Health Center and the Kilpatrick Turnpike... Just west of the house 6 miles...

Was some damage west in Piedmont. We had sirens and lots of wind, but now calm, birds are signing and I am rocking on the front porch typing this..

Some pretty good cells over east by Jones OK and Chandler.. Looks pretty dark that way.

I just want to say this now --- before anything ever does possibly happen later this week, or this spring or summer...

If you've never been in a tornado, or know anyone who has, it's the worst experience you can almost go thru... These things are NOTHING to play around with... When they issue a watch, you need to pay attention... These things can drop from the sky in a second...

2004 was the worst I've ever seen it up here... An F4 tornado went by 5 miles from my house, and tore up the country so bad, it looked like a war zone... Members of a family who lived in one county, were picked up and dropped off in another county... They did not make it out alive... Myself and others arrived just seconds after it took out at least 5-6 homes... Hearing babies crying for their mom's was not anything I ever want to hear again... Having to walk a mile to a home due to the road being totally "bombed" out was not anything I want to do again...

When your town is being issued a tornado warning --- get to safety first... Then try to call people you know on a cell phone and let them know it's coming...

If you have NO experience at all -- don't be like me and go looking for these things... I learned my lesson a time or two before I finally went to seminars to learn about these things...

Be safe -- but above all -- BE SMART !!! Don't just set there and think it could never happen to you...

Are you aware of the number of foreign pilots who fought for the RAF during The Battle? I don't recall the exact numbers, but many pilots from foreign countries flew, namely the Poles (with damn good reason) and Americans. And, of course, other folks from the British Empire. I give the Brits due credit (my paternal grandfather was an RAF mechanic during The Battle), but to say they did it "all alone" is incorrect.

Ah, the numbers:

Nationality Number

Polish 139
New Zealander 98
Canadian 86
Czechoslovakian 84
Belgian 29
Australian 21
South African 20
French 13
Irish 10
Unknown 8
American 7
Jamaican 1
Palestinian (Jewish) 1
Southern Rhodesian 1

There were ~2500 British RAF pilots available before The Battle.

Yes, they had a few pilots volunteer to help them but nobody powerful. They withstood it on their own until we showed up. And I very much respect them for it and I resent them being called cowards. The French, yes, the British, no.

03-29-2007, 09:49 PM
Oh, yes, and Roosevelt created the Lend-Lease program so we could provide them with equipment without the consent of Congress. The F4U Corsair in particular. Most of the Corsairs were pushed off the decks of carriers into the sea, under our supervision, after the war. It seems they had to pay for them to keep them and they wanted jets instead by that time.

Almost 20% of the pilots who flew in the BoB weren't British. That's not "a few," IMO. The British, including Churchill, gave credit where credit was due. The British very well might have lost that battle if it weren't for their foreign help. They fought EXTREMELY tenaciously, especially the Poles. This has nothing adverse to say about the Brits; they fought as hard as they always have. But, "the few" (from Churchill's immortal words) included these brave, selfless foreign men.

So less than 20% of their pilots constitute "Help" by your definition? No nation of any consequence helped the Brits against the very powerful German Luftwaffe. Not the Russians, not the US, nobody. They did it alone. You just want to argue.

Lend Lease didn't take place until 1941, IIRC. Therefore, it wasn't of much help during The Battle of Britain.

Well, yeah. Considering the arguable fact that Britain may have lost the battle, the Germans would have gained air superiority and potentially invaded, thereby eliminating the second front and the staging point of Overlord if they hadn't been around? Yeah, I'll call that "help." At the very least, it shows that the British didn't resist the Germans "all alone."

I won't split hairs with you. Less than 20% volunteer foreign pilots does not constitute much help in a war of that magnitude. And the US did help them some through Lend-Lease although I think we were doing that to buy time to convert our automakers to making planes, tanks and other war materials. At any rate, the Brits are not cowards.

It was a single campaign. In that timeframe, it was a purely European conflict. But, are you seriously going to argue that 20% of a fighting force isn't significant, let alone "all alone?" If so, you're a fool.

And the US did help them some through Lend-Lease although I think we were doing that to buy time to convert our automakers to making planes, tanks and other war materials.

Like I said IIRC, the Battle of Britain happened during 1940. Lend Lease didn't start until 1941. So, I fail to see why that's relevant.

At any rate, the Brits are not cowards.

You are the fool to try to insist that a minority of pilots were significant in a battle against such a superior foe as Germany. Britain needed planes, tanks, fuel and other war materials. They needed help from other nations of consequence and they got NONE. You are an argumentitive little bastard even when you are DEAD WRONG

Actually, since the Battle of Britain was an aerial battle and Britain had plenty of planes (but not pilots), you are the one who is mistaken.

IMO, 20% is a significant amount of help, it wasn't a war (yet) it was a single campaign. It was a very significant time in world history because the Brits almost lost that battle (hence the significance of the 20%) and if they would have lost the ensueing war could have had drastically different results, even if an allied victory still came in the end.

I guess Skip doesn't agree, so him saying he doesn't shouldn't change anything, I think he does it just to pass time, while his tv went out and the storm hit his house......

Few down powerlines over off Morgan Rd and Kilpatrick Turnpike... Some roads are closed with in that area.. It blew a few cars off the Turnpike causing minor injuries from what I hear.

IN Piedmont I heard that there was some major injuries whose house took a direct hit from another one. Not sure if anyone was fatility injured or not.

Damn, man. Good that you're safe and all, but it sucks to hear about major injuries from natural disasters. I'm interested in hearing updates from the area, let me know about Skip's area too, he has me on ignore.

I know, that's what I'm hearing. I have a soft spot for this stuff. And all the jabbing back and forth with some of the people on here I certainly don't wish any bad stuff on any of you.

I lived through my high school in Topeka getting hit by a tornado (my car almost didn't) during class, I had just moved there from Colorado, so I didn't know anything about tornados it was a weird experience.

the siren goes off, people start filling the hallways and the dipshit new boy is standing at the window watching the cars in the parking lot (30 yards away) get re arranged. The classroom's folding windows slam shut and the teacher had to yell at me to get out of the room. A few seconds after I get in the hallway the windows in the class break. I didn't know the proceedures, what are you going to do.

Yeah, pretty much. But only now have we gotten the combination of bone dry and extreme heat at the same time. A 40k-acre fire in eastern Colorado yesterday was started by sparks from someone blowing a tire. That's all it takes these days.

About 40 miles from the closest one, I guess, so not really close at all. The air just sucked this morning.

Well, can you tell me what it feels like?

"Fool, it's hot! I told you again! Were you born on the sun? It's damn hot! I saw... It's so damn hot, I saw little guys, their orange robes burst into flames. It's that hot! Do you know what I'm talking about?"

To give you an idea, here's a map. It hasn't been updated since another one broke out directly to the east of Denver about 75 miles yesterday.
