I developed a little simulation for the 2007 draft, using Chiefsplanet members as the potential draftees. The methodology is below if you're interested. The bottom line is that any poster with 500 or more posts can possibly be drafted.

There are 255 draft positions, and at the end I'll also add another 255 off-the-street free agent positions. There are 610 eligible posters, so about 5 in 6 will get an opportunity to compete for the team.

Your job is, if drafted to comment on who your real-life competition would be, along with competition from any other drafted Chiefsplanet members, and report whether you would feel good about your chances of making the team and/or starting as a rookie.

You may also provide draft reviews of other choices if you wish.

Methodology:

To determine the draft order, I took each person's post count and added a random number to that is between 0 and 65,120. The highest total became the first pick in the draft and I worked my way down from there. While I'm a bit rusty at probabilities, I think the 65,120 figure gives the bottom person on the list (DR T with 500 posts) a 1 percent chance of being drafted higher than the top person on the list (Endelt, shockingly).

To determine the position, I looked at the likelihood of each position being drafted in each round since the 7-round drafts began in 1994. Therefore, you're more likely to see punters in the later rounds than the early rounds, more likely to see quarterbacks in the first and last rounds, etc.

Off-the-street free agents were randomly assigned to a team, and their positions were determined randomly based on the total typical positions on a 53-man roster.

Positions are not based on actual team needs, but rather random determination as noted above.

Note that some defensive backfield draft picks were labeled as DBs, while others were labeled as S or CB. My assumption here is that a DB can pick whether they'll be a CB or an S.

I'll continue posting picks as I have time.

Ready?

Draft review of top ten picks.

1. Logical, QB, Oakland - Certainly a talent here, and QB is a position of need for the Raiders. There's a little question about how coachable Logical is, and whether he'll inspire the team or merely come in predicting 4-12 seasons every year. Overall, though, he was a very high rated prospect and should easily beat out Brooks and Andrew Walter for the starting job on Day 1.

2. htismaqe, OT, Detroit. No-brainer pick here. Student of the game, high productivity, fundamentally solid. The key question is whether he'll start at right tackle or move Jeff Backus over from the left side.

3. gochiefs, LB, Cleveland. Great pick here. Relentless, never say die defender will move right into the LILB spot behind Ted Washington and should stay there for a decade.

4. Baby Lee, DE, Tampa. Greg Spires is getting old at LDE, and Tampa really needs a talent infusion in their front seven. Can he provide a pass rush to help the DBs?

5. Stevie Ray, DB, Arizona. Another big hitter to complement Antrel Rolle and Adrian Wilson. Big student of the game, loves the game of football and has already sent at least one guy off the field at Arrowhead on a stretcher.

6. jAZ, LB, Washington. Should move to the LLB spot, replacing James Posey, and provide a good cerebral complement to the sometimes out of control Redskins defense.

7. Mile High Mania, CB, Minnesota. Will form a great complement at RCB to Antoine Winfield on the other side. Should immediately start and fill a void, though Minnesota's weak LB corps won't help him as a rookie.

8. JOhn, WR, Atlanta. A bit of a surprise pick here, since JOhn was only barely ranked in the top 50 chiefsplanet prospects, and Atlanta already has Michael Jenkins and Ashley Lelie at the receiver spots. Obviously they're looking for more talent for Vick to throw the ball too, so JOhn will get plenty of action even if he doesn't start immediately.

9. Rain Man, DE, Miami. Rain Man is walking into a great situation in Miami, as the defensive line is ancient but effective. Should be able to beat out Kevin Carter to line up next to Keith Traylor and opposite Jason Taylor. Perfect situation for a rookie, both short term and long term.

10. Denverchief, DB, Houston. Will likely start at one of the safety positions to shore up a big weak spot for Houston. Has some talent to work with, with Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans in the front seven, and Dunta Robinson and DeMarcus Faggins at the corners. Good situation for a young safety.

I really like my draft spot. Jason Taylor will probably take some heat off of me, and I think I can beat out Kevin Carter to take the LDE spot. My other competition is David Bowens and Matt Roth. Plus, all of the starters are old (Vonnie Holliday is the other DT), so once I start reaching my peak I'll be the leader of the defensive line.

Who's the coach in Miami now?

On a personal note, Miami's a nice place to live, and #9 money is pretty good. I think I'll go buy a Lamborghini and a lot of sunscreen.

Yeah, I thought it would be more fun to put some randomization in the process, as opposed to just going down the list in order of posts.

For each member with 500 or more posts, I generated a random number from 0 to 65,120. That random number was then added to their post count to develop a "Total Draft Figure". I then sorted that database in descending order, so the top person got the 1st pick, second-highest went second, and so on.

With this system, it's possible that any member could have been selected first in the draft, and it's possible that any member could go undrafted. However, members with high post counts are more likely to be drafted, and drafted high, than members with low post counts. The 65,120 figure was designed so that there was a 1 percent chance that the person with the lowest post count could actually beat the person with the highest post count.

The scores for the first-round picks are as follows. The first number is their post count, the second number is the random number that was drawn for that person, and the third figure is the total.

As you'll see, there were three members who were clearly the top three picks in the draft. Logical drew a random number of 50,746 to add to his 53,331 posts, so his score of 104,076 made him the first pick. htismaqe was the only other person who beat 100,000 points as he also combined a high post count with a high random number.

If you look at Stevieray, he almost pegged the random number, drawing 64,677 points out of a possible 65,120. However, he has only 21,001 posts, so he got up to the #5 spot but couldn't pass the top four. Several others got more than 64,000 random points, including some lower post count guys like vailpass, simply red, and kc jones.

I think you can assume that post count is equivalent to college productivity and the random number is their performance at the combine.

Coach
04-15-2007, 08:59 AM
I really like my draft spot. Jason Taylor will probably take some heat off of me, and I think I can beat out Kevin Carter to take the LDE spot. My other competition is David Bowens and Matt Roth. Plus, all of the starters are old (Vonnie Holliday is the other DT), so once I start reaching my peak I'll be the leader of the defensive line.

Who's the coach in Miami now?

On a personal note, Miami's a nice place to live, and #9 money is pretty good. I think I'll go buy a Lamborghini and a lot of sunscreen.

That'd be me. Go get me my water, rook.

Baltimore Ravens select RB Scott Free.

Thank you all for joining us here at Ramada South, i would like to now take this opportunity to speak on behalf of my client scott free. We are unequivocally demanding a trade from the ravens or scott free will sit out the 07 season ala John Felway & Eli Manning.

Scott cannot in good conscious play for that pack of buttmunching fools, in fact, just hearing the word "billick" causes scott to break out in horrid full body rashes, nausea & numbness on his right side.

Please forward any future questions to me...Drew Rosencrantzandguildenstern...

patteeu
04-15-2007, 12:56 PM
Round 1, Pick 27.

New Orleans Saints select QB patteeu.

The comparisons to the class of 1983 are inevitable. With 6 QBs taken in this years' first round, how can we help but recall that draft so long ago that brought us the likes of John Elway, Jim Kelly, and Tony Eason. Some might be tempted to compare patteeu with the 6th QB taken in that draft, coincidentally with the 27th pick, Dan Marino, but that comparison is probably too superficial to hold up to scrutiny.

With pressing needs in the defensive secondary and a very solid QB in Drew Brees, New Orleans must see something in this small college signal caller that makes them think he could be their QBOTF. While it's possible that the tenacious-to-a-fault patteeu could compete with veteran backup, Jamie Martin, we believe it's more likely that the Saints will use him as their 3rd string/scout team QB until he can get used to the speed of the Pro game.

Playing in the poorly-covered small school DC division, many may not be familiar with patteeu's game. He is more well suited to a dink-and-dunk, controlled type offense than to one that relies on the vertical passing game, but he is capable of airing it out from time to time too. He's typically more comfortable throwing the ball to his right, but in certain situations, he can throw left too. He's known to be a big fan of Bush and he thinks that Houston made a big mistake by drafting Marco Williams 1st overall last year.

Asked to comment about being drafted by the Saints, patteeu said, "I grew up a Kansas City Chiefs fan and they will always have a place in my heart, but if you're going to pay me big bucks, I consider it a huge honor to get to play in the Big Easy! I look forward to learning from a great NFL QB like Drew Brees and one of the best young coaches in the league today. I'm also thrilled that I'll be in the same rookie class as AustinChief who isn't a flashy kind of guy and who doesn't get noticed a lot, but he is the kind of guy who makes incredible things possible with the things he does."

EDITORIAL/Football draft scandal

04/07/2007

As widely suspected, money has been reportedly passed under the table by the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and rougue player agents including Drew Rosenhouse to acting NFL Commissioner in blackballing at least two of the most promising players in the 2007 NFL draft--frazod and Mr. Kotter. And this may only be the tip of the iceberg. It has now been learned that several clubs also paid a combined sum of more than 60 million Japensese yen each in bribes to at least twenty five other teams to bypass these future NFL stars. A tawdry night of sex, gambling, and drugs appear to be behind this sorry espisode, as the wife of the acting commissioner was being passed around Indianapolis, during the recent combines, like a collection plate at church. Kotter and frazod are allegedly implicated, because they refused to participate in the activities as they considered her a "nappy headed ho."

This story is breaking as we speak, and developments will be posted as news will warrant...

At the end of Day One, we've got several surprises still on the board. Poor combines, bad interviews, Wonderlic issues, and steroid allegations dog some of these candidates, and at least one of the Top 20 can't even be located. With others, the drop is a mystery and they'll have to hope that teams go fishing for bargains on Day Two.

Round 3, Pick 86

Denver Broncos select LB MadProphetMargin.

MadProphetMargin didn't play his junior or senior years and he didn't bother to show up for the combine. He must have just been drafted on the basis of a cool name or something. The second coming of Rocky Calmus, I guess.

This is a bogus charge. I'd be surprised if Mr. Kotter is drafted at all. Reliable sources indicate that he has had problems with mulitple personality disorder. After the trouble the Raiders had with Barret Robbins, teams are hesitant to take on players who are only tenuously connected to reality.

And Frazod is known to have had at least one violent incident involving a firearm and a refrigerator that many GMs will consider to be a risk factor if not a sign that it's better to steer entirely clear of this guy.

Damn.....I can't believe this. I figured I'd slip in the draft; football execs are intimidated by Adonis type prospects with a 99th per centile on the Wonderlic, but you'd think they'd put the good of their team ahead of their petty personal jealousy. You and I still on the "board" proves they don't. :shake:

That's probably why I am headed for the 7th round......some guy who was a 7th rounder last year said I should make them think I was going to play baseball. That way I would be sure to go to a team with a crappy defense that would start a rookie right away.

interview with chiefscafan

Though highly recruited out of high school the speed phenom barely got any playing time and only played in his last year. Wowing scouts at the combine must not be enough to get drafted.

chiefscafan had this to say,

"What I lack in experience I more than make up for in quality." I was behind some great players and just waited for my turn and when it came I took it. Personally I'm ready to contribute anyway I can on special teams etc. I'm listed as a Safety or CB but I can also play WR or return kicks. I just can't wait to see where i'm gonna go."

Kiper: Personally i think this kid is gonna be a steal for some team down the road later on in this draft."
