Chiefs' Shields retires after stellar career
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Offensive guard Will Shields of the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the NFL's most celebrated blockers of this era on the field and most honored philanthropists off it, has decided to retire from the NFL after 14 seasons.

Will Shields
Shields

A 12-time Pro Bowl performer and certain candidate for Hall of Fame honors, Shields made the announcement of his retirement on his Web site on Sunday evening.

"The love for the game never decreased but, as the years passed, the physical requirements of the game became harder to fulfill each and every day," Shields wrote on the site. "If it was up to me I would play football forever but, as we all know, that is unrealistic."

Shields, 35, has been a fixture for the Chiefs at right guard and a leader in the Kansas City community since the team selected the former Nebraska star in the third round of the 1993 draft. He is the longest-tenured player on the Kansas City roster and his 224 appearances and 223 starts are franchise records.

In 14 seasons, Shields never missed a game, and he failed to start only one contest, his first regular-season outing, as a rookie in 1993. He is one of only four NFL players since the merger in 1970 to start more than 200 straight games.

Shields has appeared in 12 straight Pro Bowl games and his 224 regular-season games are more than any of the seven modern-era guards currently in the Hall of Fame.

As notable an impact as Shields has made on the field, where he is regarded as one of the premier in-line blockers in modern league history, his accomplishments outside of football are just as laudable.

As a rookie, Shields and his wife, Senia, established the "Will to Succeed Foundation." The foundation's Web site defines its purpose as "inspiring, guiding and improving the lives of abused, battered and neglected women and children."

The foundation, and numerous other charitable efforts helped earn Shields the NFL's prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year honor in 2003. Shields and his wife have garnered considerable recognition in other quarters as well for the lives they have affected.

Shields has flirted with the notion of retirement in the past, notably a year ago, and he sat out most of the Chiefs' offseason conditioning program as he deliberated his future. After much thought, Shields returned to the team and enjoyed another standout season.

He has three seasons remaining on his contract, at base salaries of $1.2 million (for 2007), $1.59 million (2008) and $1.98 million (2009). Shields becomes the second potential Hall of Fame offensive lineman to retire from the Chiefs in the last two years. Tackle Willie Roaf, a 11-time Pro Bowl performer, retired last year.

"I am looking forward to a future filled with sports in mind," Shields wrote. "Whether it is in the stands, on the sideline, in the press box or in a office -- football will remain in my blood."

From Will's web site:

http://www.willtosucceed.org/

THANK YOU KANSAS CITY!!!

Everyday I count the blessings that have been bestowed upon my family and me. Each day I am thankful that I was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and think of all the people who have supported the team, our family’s foundation, and me. This community is like no other when it comes to support. Fourteen years sure fly by when you get to do what you love. The love for the game never decreased but, as the years passed, the physical requirements of the game became harder to fulfill each and every day. If it was up to me I would play football forever but, as we all know, that is unrealistic.

However, I do hope to always be connected to the game in some capacity. The decision to hang up my cleats has not been an easy one to make for me but one I knew I would eventually have to make. Today, I am letting everyone know that I am putting away my pads.

First, I would like to thank the guys who came before me…who paved the way for me to have an opportunity to play in this league….I thank my parents, brother, and sister for their unwavering love….I thank the guys who have fought beside me to try to fulfill the ultimate dream…..I thank my coaches from Lawton High who saw potential in me and gave me the first shot at a little boy’s dream…..I thank my coaches at the University of Nebraska who let a young kid play as a freshman….and I thank the Kansas City Chiefs for allowing me to dance in the most exciting stadium in the NFL….I thank the Hunt family for their support through the years and last, but not least, I thank my number one fan base, my wonderful wife and children.

I am looking forward to a future filled with sports in mind. Whether it is in the stands, on the sideline, in the press box or in a office--football will remain in my blood. My best wishes to all and I hope to see you soon

Thank you again, for all your support.

A thing of beauty.

The other one isn't too bad either. Absorbs contact, controls the engagement, turns him, and flattens him into the pavement like a duck. That's gotta hurt.

As of now our group is (from left tackle to right tackle):

Yeah, let's just ignore all the other holes in our lineup and draft a bunch of O-Linemen.

I think we were going to draft a couple of O-Linemen anyway, and Shields' retirement was already speculated, and expected.

Upgrades over both Ts.

Welbourne is a step down.

Waters is as good as ever.

Weigmann is a step down because he's aging.

It's all a wash to me, at this point, barring a good draft pick.

No one is gonna be able to answer that question with any degree of certainty, and you know it. As bad as it was last year at times, this year will require growth by Sampson (or, I say Svitek) and play beyond anything McIntosh is known for. And Wellborne as an upgrade of Will, even at this stage of his career...is questionable. Bottom-line, is you could be right...but I wouldn't be betting on it. :(

That was a fun game. I don't even remember who won but I loved watching Ray Lewis get his ass kicked. I can't root for KC to win against some team that's not in our division but I was rooting for whichever Chief was kicking Ray's ass on any given play. That was just a beautiful thing to watch.

We won, Mr. listopencil. You know, I've sort of wondered about that game.

Monday night (as I recall), Chiefs not historically good on the road, fearsome and deadly Ravens defense, that was basically the setup. So, they mic Ray (Vermeil later commented that he didn't like our players wired during games) and off we go.

Anyway, the game ensues and Ray gets his ass kicked repeatedly. Not just once, mind you. But repeatedly by every Chief who has his number. Then he starts complaining on the sideline about stuff that wasn't even happening (like being double-teamed, not getting help, etc.). One would think that, knowing he was wired, Ray would not have whined as much.

If it is over money we should not give him more. Shieds was a great player for us for many years. However, I saw too many sack up the middle over the past couple of years.

WS made Holmes, Johnson, Allen, Anders, Williams, Hill more money than their agents. However, the last 2 PB's were gifts. It will pad the numbers enough to make him the next Chiefs HOF. Although DT deserves to be in.

Mr. Fax, I am not Mr. Hunts Accountant so I have no concern of his personal wealth. I do not think we are near the salary cap so my initial response is to agree that Shields is better than Welbourne.

However, if the young Hunt is like the old Hunt he treats the salary cap more like a friend than enemy...so the extra expense is a concern.

And, Shields play has slipped enough over the past couple of years where I doubt he would be better than Welbourne. If Welbourne can clear a UA.

There were too many sacks last year (and the year before during Roafs pre-retirment season) that I assumed would have been due to pressure off the edges. Upon further review they were right up the middle.

I know Shields didnt play all 3 interior line positions. Many of the sacks were on his side.

Excellent points, all, Mr. Mojo Rising. Well considered and compellingly presented.

You're 100% right about Shields not performing up to his former standards over the past couple of years. One has to wonder, however, how much of that is due to his fading abilities, the line calls, and/or the talent next to him.

Nevertheless, I would take a semi-washed up Shields over a roided up Welbourne any day. The cap, of course, is another matter entirely. You're right about that, too. One can only speculate as to why the Chiefs spend the way they do. Only Mr. htismaqe knows the answers to those questions.

Having said that, I think the time is right for Will to retire. We're rebuilding, our offensive glory days are behind us for the time being, and he can "walk" away with pride intact.

The problem with this logic is that Roaf was already gone last season, and Shields wasn't great the last couple seasons.

Will our O-line be a lot more worse then our 2003 line? Definitely.

Could our O-line be better then they were in 2006? Definitely.

Croyle might want to tank it a little in camp and pre-season. Give Huard the opportunity of playing behind the 2007 KC O-line until they have had a half season or so to gel. Anytime you have a new combination at O-line there are pass protect breakdowns and blown running assignments.

Otherwise we might find out real fast if Croyle has improved on his ability to avoid injury or if he is still made of glass.
