I'm going to be taking the family to northern LA this summer, our first such trip since moving to Overland Park. Mapquest suggests going down US-71 to Fort Smith then Interstate to Little Rock and US-167 down to I-20. I'm looking for information on the two US highways. Are they two lane, undivided, no shoulder back roads? Is there a small town and a speed zone every 10 mins? Road construction? Is there an alternate route you'd suggest? We're going to Monroe LA. Thanks in advance.

Dude, mapquest sucks. LA is in California. Take I-35S and pickup US40 in OKC. Take that to I-10 and that will take you straight into LA.

...and I would suggest south-central instead of northern

If I re-typed it as Monroe Louisiana would that change your advice? :p

My family lives in Olathe and visits my mother and others in LA each year...

Best thing to do is take US169 or HWY75 to Tulsa, US75 south out of tulsa to the Indian Nation Turnpike to Hugo, US271 South to I-20 then east on to Shreveport or Monroe...

Stay the F*ck away from Arkansas... They are f*ckling clueless when it comes to building roads...

I am heading to Shreveport on Friday and will be taking I-40 to the Indian Nation and so on...

Seems to work well, not a lot of traffic, have driven that way many of trips...

I did the 71 highway route to Shreveport just last November. 71 does get pretty backwoods in Arkansas. I thought it was an intersesting drive though. Its the straightest route for sure.

Probably be faster through Oklahoma, but a much more fun drive through Arkansas.

With a 2.5 year old I'm not interested in a fun drive so much, he gets crabby if we drive up to Liberty.

Probably take you about 8 hours to go 71 direct to I-20 in Shreveport. The worst part will be from just south of Ft. Smith to Ashdown, AR. The rest of it is 4 lane divided highway.
