View Full Version : What is your greatest sports accomplishment that you achieved?

Just like the subject states. Lets hear your accomplishments.

Did you score over 40 points in a basketball game?

Four touchdowns in a high school or college game?

Have you directly affected a close outcome in a game: blocked a field goal attempt, tackled someone before they scored a td, hit the game winner with a full count in baseball, etc etc

By the way, scoring on my mom doesnt count

When I was 14 I lost a fly ball in the lights and caught it in the face.

I woke up laying in the middle of left field covered in blood, my nose cut by the laces and bleeding, both lips busted open and bleeding and my 2 front teeth rearranged so they were laying on top of each other.

I lived in a small town and we only had 9 kids on the team so I refused to quit playing or my buddies would have to forfeit.

That was in the bottom of the 1st inning. I went 3 for 4 that night with 3 RBIs.

It's either that or being involved in the great pushball war of 89 during our battalion field day. Nearly 30 people went to the hospital that day for various sprains, dislocations and broken bones.

I am an average basketball player at best (that's stretching it), and never scored a lot - maybe 2 to 6 points a game. However, we once played a team (and the team was way better than ours), and for some reason, I got hot and scored 30 points that game. Never did anything like it in my life again.

Something I can put on my resume.

Wow... where to begin?

In college, I fouled out in every intramural basketball game we played... I also received the most flagrant foul penalties against rival fraternity teams. I think the record still stands 14 years later.

I also intercepted a pass and ran it back 80 yards in a local football game when we played in the Dallas Sports & Social Club (late 90s). It was round one of the playoffs. It was the final minute of the game and we won.

Oh, in college (again) I was playing outfield for our intramural team and I mis-judged a hit thanks to the sun. The ball lipped my glove and nailed me directly in the balls. Ouch. I did a tumble, jumped up... dropped the glove and sprint-cried back to my dorm. It was the night that Chris Webber called his infamous "time out" in the NCAA's.

If my kids receive their sports skills from me... they're SOL.

I scored a 0 bowling when I was 8.

I won a putt-putt tourney when I was 9. I won $65. Because of that, it took me out of the amateur division and I had to go pro where I floundered. Too much success, too soon. I wasn't prepared for the Sin City lifestyle of the professional putt-putt tour.

I once scored 36 points in a high school basketball game - but we lost.

My largest accomplishment happened during my senior year in high school. I hit a double down the right field line with the bases loaded in the last inning of sectionals to send my high school to the state playoffs.

We got beat the next week and I was off to Ft Leonard Wood and then to the jungles of SE Asia for a tropical vacation.

I'll never forget that hit though.

Probably in college I had like 4 put outs (as catcher) picking runners off of bases.

(In college) striking out 11 in a game (we lost).

Funny story (In college)... I called for a pickoff attempt at the 1st base runner. Only problem was... first baseman didn't get the signal.

Pitch came and I slung the ball over for the pickoff attempt. 1st baseman had no clue. The runner had that dear in headlights look as the ball was coming. Had the 1st baseman caught the ball and put the tag down the runner was dead as a door knob. However with the 1st baseman not looking/expecting... the ball went straight for the runner. He tried to jump out of the way but that ball found a nice spot right on his leg.

I felt sorry for the kid as I thought I broke his leg. Never knew the results of the injury.

1st baseman was pulled from the game.

I know its hard to believe by looking at me know but I was an athlete back in my youth.

During one 2 year stretch of little league baseball as a pitcher I allowed 6 hits. The kids were scared of me because I threw so hard. But I had control issues and walked a lot of batters.

I averaged 1.5 touchdowns a game in Junior high as a tailback.

But when I hit high school I found other things to do.

It's a tie:

In 6th grade, I kicked two home runs in a kickball game.

Freshman year of high school, I hit a game-winning jumper from the right corner in gym class basketball. An opposing player, who was on the varsity basketball team, said "nice shot" when I let it fly.

Pathetic, I know. Those who can, play. Those who can't, become sportswriters.

I have to reach way back...I went undefeated in the 110m hurdles in 7th grade track & field.

Another comes to mind. While playing sandlot football, I flattened a varsity player from our highschool when I was a smallish JV'er. That was fun. Not too many people liked the guy. My best friend had him around the legs and held him up for the kill. Good times.

A bases loaded triple off the base of the fence in the tournament my last year in little league which lead to getting a tie vote for team MVP in the tourney. The triple won us the game but I voted for the other kid who pitched every game if I remember correctly.

It didn't mean as much but I was real proud of my first (and only) over the fence home run left handed too. I'm a natural righty but taught myself to switch hit and eventually got better batting left than right. Had to go back and work to feel comfortable batting right handed again. It was weird. Since there was like one left handed pitcher in the whole league I could bat left all the time and it just became more natural.

Most of my accomplishments were in track. I was a sprinter. Heh.

But I've played a good bit of football, softball, volleyball, and golf since then.

I guess the football accomplishment is that I've always been a fumble recovery specialist. If the ball is on the ground and I can get a mitt on it, it's mine. The biggest reason for that is my focus is on getting the ball, not advancing it. Seriously though, I always lead the team in fumble recoveries - as a DB.

Oh, and best sports accomplishment - making all three outs in an inning during a softball game as a catcher - caught one pop-up and tagged two guys out at the plate. I always really enjoyed that - went out of my way to pop the runner upside the head with the ball and glove. Got a couple of RBIs in that game, too. Yeah, I know that's lame, but its all I've got.

Probably not all the estimable an achievement, but personally very satisfying.

When I played soccer in HS, we were the first soccer team our school ever fielded. We got a new coach, fresh from St. Louis, who didn't know us from Adam. I show up for tryouts, tell him I'm a forward, and he sized me up as his big bull defender. All through preseason I diligently fulfilled my duties as a defenseman.
Then, in our first game, we had the varsity game first, then the JV game. He only played me for a half in the varsity game, so he could let me play some offense [due to my nagging insistence] in the JV game. I scored 3 goals in 5 minutes, he pulled me and told me 'OK, now I see.' I started left wing on varsity for the rest of the season, scoring 15 goals in 17 games.

Similar memories for me. I went 8 for 11 my senior year during the state tourney, and my team won state (6A in Kansas). Had an article in the paper about me (pretty cool stuff for an 18 year old).

Also went to the little league world series (AABC maybe?) between freshman and sophomore seasons. We played in Waterbury, Connecticut. Played against a team from Cincy (they had Barry Larkin's little brother), a team from California (they swung a sledge hammer in the on deck circle), a team from Miami and a team from Puerto Rico. 13.) First Team All Conference (MBC).
14.) Led our team within 2 games of the State Championship, we got beat one game before we would of played OJ Mayo and Bill Walker (lol). That year they had Keenan Ellis he was 6'11 and thats who I would of had to guard.
15.) Made it up on our schools "Wall of Fame".
16.) We only had two players two dunk in a game that season even though we could dunk really easy. I was one my best friend Mitch had a sweet two handed dunk. I stole the ball at half court and dunked it right on this kid it was sweet.

I think the best thing I accomplished that year was the ability to stay humble. Our school wasnt huge but we didnt have a town so all the towns around covered our school in their sports. I have a binder full of news paper articles about me in it and as a 17 year old senior in a small school everyone looks at you different then everyone else. In a small school you get put on a pedastool if you will, and that is something I handled very well and I never played cocky or was arrogant. I think thats the thing I cant stand these days a lot of people are very good atheletes and they will let you know they are by talking about how good they are and what not. My dad always said let your game talk for you and I did, and when you do that more people respect you and I found that out and you get more friends. I also had so many injuries that I could never reach the pinnacle of my game and injuries can humble you very mutch, because when you are dominating people you think of what you could do if you were healthy, it sucks but its probably for the best. I love sports and always will and I miss High School and the friendships you have with your buddies on the team......Ahhhh good times.

I'm inclined to believe the young lad. He's only been removed from HS for a couple of years. If I were to recount my HS glory days, they be filled with nothing but lies - seeing how it was 20 some odd years ago.

I did have sex with Morgan Fairchild though. Yeah, that's the ticket......

Defeated the Jocks in the intramural javelin throwing contest using a specially designed rubber javelin that maximized my limp-wristed throwing style. Later that night I performed a rap in the talent contest, thereby wrapping up our victory and assuring the student council president's chair would be occupied by a member of our house.

Most of my "great moments " like everyone else were in HS:

Football- As a Sophomore. I kicked a last minute FG from 30 yards out to beat our most hated rival....at the time they were rated #1 in 3A and we were #3.

Baseball- Hit several "walk-off" home runs during my 3 year career as a starter, but none more fun than hitting a Grand Slam on a 3-2 pitch against team who eventually won the state championship that year.

One other memorable sports feat came while playing fast-pitch softball several years back. I knocked in all of the runs in a 8-4 win.....a couple of 3-run homers and a 2-run double.

Bob Dole absolutely hated wrestling. When Bob Dole was a high school junior and they forced us to wrestle in gym, Bob Dole would just go through the motions and intentionally lose. The teacher (who was the head football coach) decided it would be funny to put Bob Dole up again a senior who was on the wrestling team. Bob Dole kept attempting to flop and the jackass was just doing shit to keep from getting the pin. Bob Dole finally got pissed and gave the asshole a pile driver.

Bob Dole didn't get asked to participate in the wrestling part of gym class any more.

When I was a junior, my football team won the State Championship. I have a thread written about it here. Columbus High Football.

I didn't start, but I played a lot and in the Championship, I got one tackle and a half sack. I played defensive tackle/noseguard.

My senior year, I started every game playing both left side offensive tackle and noseguard. I was pretty decent. Nothing special, but reliable.

I also played baseball for two years, was pretty bad, but it was fine. My last at bat was a double.

It was probably an anger issue. Bob Dole would typically get pissed off and lose his temper, and grabbing someone just didn't provide the release you get from knocking the shit out of him like you can in boxing or football.

Bowling...now that would be a fun Chiefs Planet outing.

PF...we should get together sometime and have a night of bowling. I came from a long line of family bowlers...in fact I am the worst in the family and I carried an average of 180. My dad, his 2 brothers, and their dad (my grandpa) were 4 Man National Champs for several years when I was growing up. My older brother went to college (Southwest Baptist College, now University) on a bowling scholarship. He and his roommate in college were National Doubles Champs 2 years running.

Sounds like a plan... I'm sure we could get a good group together sometime... For the first time in 5 years, I'm not bowling in the summer league... This will end a 5 year run of bowling at least one time per week... That's what ----- 180 straight weeks of bowling ??? Not sure --- I forgot how many weeks are in a year.... ROFL ... Is it 52 weeks ???? In that case, it's been 260 straight weeks of bowling...
