Raiders | Deal with Cleveland a possibility?
Fri, 27 Apr 2007 12:05:48 -0700

ESPN's Ed Werder reports there is a chance the Oakland Raiders work out a trade with the Cleveland Browns during the first round of the NFL Draft. There is speculation the Browns could send WR Braylon Edwards to the Raiders in addition to the No. 3 pick overall for the first-overall selection.

Quinn's pretty good. I don't like this one damn bit.

No shit. Assuming this story isn't BS.

People can say he sucked against good competition, but in those games, the ND defense gave up an average of 37 points.

He was playing from behind more often than not in those games, and still managed a respectable 17 TD v. 12 INT's.

He may struggle for a year or so until they can get him an OL, but the kid is gonna be a star, and he's by far the smartest guy in the draft.

I hope for his sake, and for ours, this report is BS.

Oakland has a framework contract in place with Quinn, Russel, and A. Peterson. Standard procedure, means nothing. The number 1 overall pick is the only player allowed to agree to terms before hand.

RUMORS FLY OF QUINN TO RAIDERS

There are rumors right now in media circles that the Raiders are closing in on a deal with (drum roll, please) Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who would then be named the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network tipped us off to the rumor -- however, Schefter thinks that the rumor is not true. Mark Maske of the Washington Post acknowledges the rumor in a Friday afternoon chat, but he says he's not reporting that the deal is done.

We heard earlier in the week that the Raiders had made an initial offer to Quinn. We have since heard that, while hard numbers were not presented to Quinn's agent, Tom Condon, there was enough discussion about parameters and terms to give him a sufficient idea as to the ballpark amount of the deal.

Romeo Crennel is on the hot seat this year, he needs to win asap and it's not going to help matters if they give up their #1 wideout.

The team with the #1 pick can't sign one player and then draft another. If the Raiders sign someone before the draft, they will be forced to draft that player. So basically, if you have the #1 pick, signing someone to a contract is drafting the player for all intents and purposes.

Oakland was the worst o-line in history last year. No doubt about it. But don't expect a repeat... teams do fix stuff sometimes. The new HC hired the Falcon's O-line coaches to implement a cut-blocking scheme. Atlanta's Tom Cable is now the o-line coach. Atlanta's Greg Knapp is now the offensive coordinator. They signed ex-Bronco lineman Cornell Green & then Denvers Cooper Carlisle to use as knee-busting ankle-crunchers. Also got Jeremy Newbury from SF who also specializes in knee-hunting. Jeremy has only allowed 7 sacks in 90 starts. Combined, the two have only allowed 17 sacks in 17 seasons. They're teaching Gallery & Grove how to dive at player's ankles & leg whip as they adopt Bronco-style line play. Oakland may not have the worst o-line play again this season... its changed up a lot.

I like the pick if it was true. Brady is terrible against any sort of pass rush, USC and LSU games, combine that with the piss poor o line of the faiders and you get a crap qb.

The number one overall pick is determined until he's drafted though, right?

Sorry, I should have said the team with the #1 overall pick is free to negotiate a deal with whomever they are considering spending that pick on, be it one athlete or many.

This doesn't make a lot of sense. If Oakland wants him they could trade down at least a few spots.

I'd rather they took Russell as a Chiefs fan.

But anyway. We'll see how this "prediction" turns out...

it makes sense because Goatcheese is in attention whore mode and the whole thing is crap.

common things done when lying

1. act reluctant or mad .... so people think you didn't want to say what you just said.

2. add some vagueness ... so it's harder to prove the lie

3. if called out for lie .... get pissed and blustery to try and back done whomever is calling you out for the lie.

4. run ..... if things start going bad, get the heck out before you are completely uncovered.

I repeat...... Teams do fix stuff, and I agree with that. However, as for now, it's just pure speculation. And there's nothing wrong with acquiring new players and coaches.

However, it'll take time for them to mesh as a unit, if they do.

Peter King of Sports Illustrated:

DETROIT -- All those rumors about Brady Quinn being close to a deal with the Oakland Raiders, or having already agreed to one? Forget them. Totally false.

An NFL source with knowledge of the Raiders' discussions with Quinn's representatives this week said late Friday afternoon that the two sides aren't close, have never been close and will certainly will not consummate a deal before the start of Saturday's NFL Draft.

In fact, NFL observers at the draft in New York were preparing for the Raiders to select LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell instead of Quinn with the first pick in the draft.

In addition, the Raiders spent part of Friday making telephone calls trying to find a veteran quarterback to acquire before Saturday's draft. The Raiders do not want to exit draft weekend with a rookie quarterback backed up only by 2005 third-round pick Andrew Walter, who is mostly a failure as a part-time Oakland starter last fall.

no, no, no ... word has it that Al Davis is dead set on Al Funkenberry, a standout sophmore long snapper out of Morris State University. He likes the fact his first name is Al but more importantly he can throw a football between his legs through a hoop at 25 yards 9 out of 10 times, run the 40 under 4.5, dates a cute little blond (who likes the Raiders) and has a mom that can bake a mean bananna cream pie with a grahm cracker crust. He's also looking at a punter. So you all can forget all this talk about a QB. Jeez, what's a QB when you've got the best long snapper since Bobby Bell staring you right in the face!
