Actually, black pirates were very, very common.

I have a book somewhere titled "Pirates, the Romance & Reality" or something like that, by a famous historian named David Cordingly. Pirates were constantly taking slaves from the ships they nabbed & letting them become part of the crew. Of course most slaves jumped at the chance to be free men in a very democratic pirate society.
