Per Wikipedia....

Falwell was a controversial subject for his theological, political and social beliefs. After the September 11, 2001, attacks Falwell said on the 700 Club, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" (a sentiment with which Pat Robertson concurred). [25] After heavy criticism, Falwell apologized. [26]. As for homosexuality, Falwell remarked, "AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals." Falwell's ghostwriter, Mel White, said Falwell remarked about gay protesters, "Thank God for these gay demonstrators. If I didn't have them, I'd have to invent them. They give me all the publicity I need."[8]

During the Civil Rights Movement Falwell was a supporter of racial segregation. He said this about Martin Luther King, "I do question the sincerity of people like the Reverend Martin Luther King..."[citation needed]

Falwell has also said, "Labor unions should study and read the Bible instead of asking for more money. When people get right with God, they are better workers."[27] Regarding public schools, "I hope to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we don't have public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them." (America Can Be Saved!, Sword of the Lord Publishers, Murfreesboro, Tenn. 1979, p. 52-53.)[28]

In February 1999, an article in Falwell's National Liberty Journal suggested that a Teletubbies character, Tinky Winky, could be a hidden homosexual symbol, because the character was purple (which the article claimed was a color symbolic of homosexuality), had an inverted triangle on his head and carried a handbag. ( The pink triangles was used as a badge to denote homosexuals in Nazi concentration camps, and has since been adopted as an emblem by gay-rights movements.) Falwell denied any personal involvement with the original article, and made clear he never had any prior knowledge of or concern with the Teletubbies. Falwell's organization said the author of the article was simply repeating what others in the media were already saying about the nature of the character [29]. In the months following this incident, Falwell received a number of Tinky Winky plush dolls via mail, most of which he has given to his grandchildren.[citation needed]

Falwell often attributed political affiliation to the divine, claiming that God "is a Republican" [30] and Jesus "was the First American."

Like I said in the other thread, I find a lot of the things he said and taught on religion to be dubious, he had a lot of mistakes in his past.

But he did some good things, he encouraged religious people to take part in the political process and that voters should assert that values and character matter.

A parodoxical figure, to be certain, but one who still falls under the blanket respect owed to the dead.

-- Rev Jerry Falwell, cited in Cary McMullen, "Falwell: Now Is the Time for Gospel,"

"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve."
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, to which Rev Pat Robertson agreed, quoted from John F Harris, "God Gave US 'What We Deserve,' Falwell Says," The Washington Post (September 14, 2001)

"The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this."

"I put all the blame legally and morally on the actions of the terrorist, [but America's] secular and anti-Christian environment left us open to our Lord's [decision] not to protect. When a nation deserts God and expels God from the culture ... the result is not good."
-- Rev Jerry Falwell, backpedaling amidst criticism of his statement blaming civil libertarians, feminists, homosexuals, and abortion rights supporters for the terrorist attacks of Tuesday, September 11, 2001

do a google search ... jerry falwell's extreme stance on issues is pretty well documented.

if it was just 1 quote, i would feel the need for a more concrete source for each and every one of them.

But he's said many, many similar things with reliable sources which coincides with the other "unknown sources"

he's not in the same class as Fred PhelptardHe blamed people who disagreed with him on political issues for 9/11. He called AIDS the "gay plague" and blasted churches who sought to include homosexuals. He said he believed Muhammad was a terrorist. He longed for the day when every child was taught at a church instead of a school. He was a segregationist in the '50s and '60s, said he didn't trust Martin Luther King, and supported Apartheid in the '80s.

He was, for all intents and purposes, a media-savvy Fred Phelps. Actually, on that last point, even Phelps fought for Civil Rights before he went batshit insane. Here's Falwell's take on the issue, from 1958:

"If Chief Justice Warren and his associates had known God’s word and had desired to do the Lord’s will, I am quite confident that the 1954 decision would never have been mad. The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line."

You couldn't be more wrong. Phelps has picketed Falwell a ton. I saw him picket Falwell's church when they had hundreds of homosexual folks out to have a dialogue.

He just made them prone to committing a sin; you know, like everyone else, only somehow worse and more nasty for some reason that's not exactly clear to anyone! That's why their behavior is an abomination, while the behavior of people who are fat or get divorced isn't focused on, and that's why I have to single them out as some sort of insidious, corrupting force that's ruining our country! That's why we have to keep them from having the same rights as others, because, well, because I say so!

I like Joel Osteen preaching though. He is always positive. Positive thinking type of sermons. Plus he doesn't shove the bible at you at all. Some religious people say thats a fault of his, that he needs more scriptures, needs more fire and brimstone from him.
I asked my brother what he thought of him (hes religious) and he doesn't like him, says the same thing. I just laugh at these type of people. You can't win.

Larry Flynt is a bit more forgiving than many in this thread.

LYNCHBURG, Va (May 15, 2007) -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the folksy, small-town preacher who used the power of television to found the Moral Majority and turn the Christian right into a mighty force in American politics during the Reagan years, died Tuesday at 73.

One of Falwell's most memorable opponents was Hustler kingpin Larry Flynt, who had a very public legal battle with the Reverend over freedom of speech rights.

At the heart of the case was a satirical ad that ran in Hustler in 1983with the headline "Jerry Falwell Talks About His First Time," in which the magazine described a drunken Falwell having an incestuous encounter with his mother.

Falwell sued Flynt (pictured together on "Larry King Live" in 1997), alleging libel and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

However, the Supreme Court ruled that a public figure could not recover damages over distress based on satire under the umbrella of free speech.

Upon hearing of his death, Flynt released the following statement to Access Hollywood:

"The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle – the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.

My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in

California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.

The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in."

Falwell is survived by his wife, Macel, his two sons and a daughter, Jeannie Falwell Savas. Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.

That said, I won't piss on his grave now that he's gone, just because I didn't share in his religious righteousness.I pissed on his grave because he is a lunatic fringe. No, he's not active. But, he shares the same ideology.

I'm waiting to see where he wished death to homosexuals. Did you post the wrong quote or something?

:spock:
Only the most strident apologist couldn't connect the dots there.

AIDS is a fatal syndrome.
Falwell says that the occurrence of AIDS w/in the gay population is indicative of God's wrath.
Falwell claimed to be a man of God, which would thereby indicate support of God and his "decisions", which if you believe Falwell is a condition afflicted upon gays for their lifestyle that is always fatal.

Had he not wished death upon them via AIDS, he could have said the following things:

1) Nothing
2) It's an unfortunate occurrence

Instead, he resorted to his usual moral grandstanding, using the deaths of others as a way to promulgate his own hate-ridden message.

Wake up, dude.
