ESPN has narrowed it to Bailey or Urlacher.

I hate to say it, but at this time you would have to put Shawn Merriman in there. The guy missed four games and he still led the league in sacks. He is an animal, chemically enhanced or not. He's in the top 5

I am going for the heresy vote and saying Ray Lewis, he is a true leader on his defense besides being there best player.

Urlacher isn't even the best linebacker.

Jamaal Williams, Julius Peppers, Ed Reed, or Champ Bailey all make a strong case

Tommie Harris, Kevin Williams, and Vince Wilfork are three of the most important defenders in the league, but no one knows about either Williams or Wilfork.

At this point, Ed Reed is a much better player than Ray Lewis.

Yep. The DL and OL are the most important parts of the team, and the most under respected. If I was building a team that is where I would spend my time and resources on first.

You say in one breath he has to be considered, and in the same breath also tell me how he uses illegal substances to be this animal. Maybe if he can perform to his steroid level without the steroids, he will be considered.

I'd have to say Champ. His thrown at to INT ratio is not even funny.

I'd probably have to go Bailey, Reed or Adalius Thomas.

AT's versatility can't be overlooked, IMO.

In 2002 and 2003 there were a lot of articles talking about how overrated Urlacher was. It wasn't until the DL was revamped that he lived up to his draft hype. Harris and Ogunleye elevated the Bears D.

I feel bad for Peppers. He went into a solid defense and quickly made a name for himself. Now he is the only one worth a flying fornication on the line and never gets to come out. By the end of the game he is dead, and can't make plays. Particularly when they have a lead, and he can't get to the QB, so they lose in the 4th. It'd be difficult to deal with. Plus, he was a baller when he was at UNC. So that just makes him crazy cool:)

It is hard to pick one guy it all depends on there position but if I had to pick I would go with Bailey he is a great great all around player. The guy can come down and stuff the run like a safety and for a guy to lock down WR's with all the rules they have now is out standing. IMO he is the only true shut down CB in the NFL right now.

I'm going to go with Bailey. The guy is just unbelievable. In many cases last year he was our Red Zone defense. Just amazing. Right off the top of my head I'm thinking of that NT from San Diego other than Bailey. What is his name? Jamal Williams?
