Just noticed Tiger at 2 over.

He's pretty chapped right now. Earlier his amateur playing partner held up their group while hitting the pisser. Tiger and Ogilvey were pretty pissed that they were waiting.

Part of the problem was Tiger started hitting bad shots about two holes prior and he was in no mood to wait on the amateur.

Toms is melting down....

Tiger isn't someone that you would want to interfere with his game while playing in a major.

I hope Tiger or Phil are contending on Sunday. It'll be a nice thing to have on during fathers day. It's the one day that I have total control of the TV without some kind of guilt. Phil needs to stay out of the rough or he may have a hard time finishing 4 rounds.

I agree. I haven't heard his fairways hit with it. But it seemed like everytime I saw him use it, he missed the fairway. That's what he get for using a Nike
:) At least it's not the square one. I do not like the look of the square head.

When he hits out of the rough he lets go of the club with his hurt hand after he's made contact. He's been practicing that move.

Tiger will continue to struggle with his driving as he ages. His swing relies too much on body speed to properly square the club face, and as he naturally loses that speed of youth, he'll become more and more inaccurate..

Yeah, you get a lot of hackers out there, but they are generally among the nicest guys you'll ever find.

In its current set up...it would depend on your length.

I'm anywhere from an 8-12 and I don't think that I could break 105 on it, even though I'd probably par a couple of holes. I hit the ball about 270, but I'm wild. It would kill me more than the average 10 handicap.

A scratch player would probably shoot around 85-90, and a 25 handicap would probably shoot 130+.

I've played the course twice and shot 92 and 96. This WAS NOT the current set up. The rough was still rough and the greens were still fast.

My current handicap is 12.8. I 'm going to get to play the course June 25th.

I can't imagine playing it from these tees.

A 288 yard par 3 isn't even golf, it's just torture.

Get a scorecard of the course that you play most often---write down the slope or course number.

Type in "Handicap Index" in google, and you'll get any number of free compilers. Enter your last ten scores and the slope of the course you were playing and it will calculate it for you.

If you want an official handicap (which is useless unless you want to enter USGA events), you'll do so through your home course.

Add in a 500 yard Par 4, and the only two Par 5's on the course playing over 600, one being like 660+ IIRC.

There is a great article on Oakmont in the current issue of Golf Digest. Talks about the how the mebership strives on it being the toughest course on a day-to-day basis on the planet. They take pride in the fact that you can play this course at any time, and it be set up for an Open.

They can't even use a stimpmeter on 6 of the greens, and on the others they quit measuring after 15.

That's like putting on asphalt. Beyond lightning quick.

The fairways are probably running 10 on the stimpmeter are 28 yards wide, and tilted. Every shot you hit will follow gravity towards the rough.

What are your thoughts on this? Is this course ridiculous? I enjoy watching pro's being challenged, but this seems over the top.

Personally, I think the USGA has lost its mind. With the current Open set up, it doesn't identify the best player as much as it identifies the best grinder.

Yeah, grinding has always been a part of the US Open, but when a ball hit 4 inches too hard goes 100 feet from the hole, it has far less to do with skill and a lot more to do with luck--who ends up in a sand divot, who gets good lies in the rough, whether or not a ball takes a good hop on an approach from the rough and nestles in close to the hole.

A 288 yard par 3 isn't golf.

The USGA has become so obsessed with trying to make guys shoot over par that they've removed many of the largest elements of skill from the game.

I don't enjoy watching guys struggle and fumble about in unfair course conditions. It's boring and an exercise in futility.

For example:

Bethpage in 2002 was a perfect US Open. Fantastic venue, the course was extremely hard, but it was also fair. Pinehurst in 1999 was another great setup. They went too far in '05 IMO

One of the things that a golf course should do is make you hit a variety of shots. Laying up on every par 5 and hitting fairway woods off of every tee is more of an exercise in boredom than phenomenal skill.

I don't really enjoy Winged Foot, Oakmont, or Shinnecock with the way that the USGA sets them up for Opens.

One thing I'm surprised no one has tried, especially someone like Phil who tinkers with his equipment a lot:

Go to a 43" driver for this week. It would probably cost you about 15 or so yards off the tee, but it would be a hell of a lot easier to hit straight, and it would still go substantially longer than a 3 wood.

I have mixed feelings about it; on one side I like to see the best golfers challenged. But in alot of the situations it is WAY over the top.

The part I love about the open is that hitting into the rough is punishing. From memory, I think the USGA wants a fairway missed to be, on average, a .5 stroke penalty. It's funny to watch even the best pros try to slash out of it when going for the green, only to end up deeper in the hazard. Smarter (shorter hitters) will chop out to the fairway and then try to hit the green.
This rewards the player who "takes his medicine".

The part I dislike is that a player who "takes his medicine" out of the rough, makes a great approach, can't hold a rock hard, screaming fast green.

Overall, I enjoy this because it's unlike the other majors.

Ha! No, I haven't. But it's fun to pick long shot.

I remember one time my dad bet me 5 bucks at 100-1 that Bob Tway would win the '97 Open at Congressional. He was the last alternate and made it into the field when someone had to drop out.

Low and behold, Tway comes out and shoots a 66. He ended up fading, but still, I was afeart for a couple of days.

And that's why Miller is one of the best color guys in sports, even if he is a dumbass. He's brutally honest. Too many guys are just looking to kiss the asses of the athletes/players.

He's like the anti-Joe Morgan.

He also adds a lot of insight. He'll tell you when a guy hit a shot a groove low, or yanked his head up.

The one thing he won't do is give a lot of solid putting advice. He was one of the best ballstrikers in history, maybe top 3, but putted like a 5 handicap.

Miller actually made reference to his putting today. When Fasth was putting on hole 11(?) he very quickly slapped his wrist. Maltbie thought Fasth may have been stung by an insect just as he started to strike the ball.

Miller said: "Maybe he's just imitating me"? Maltbie was guffawing pretty good on that.

ROFL ROFL

That's great. Miller could have made a mint on the Sr. Tour if he didn't have the yips.

Although, perhaps his greatest contribution to the world of golf was coming out of nowhere to win Pebble Beach when no one had heard of Callaways.

Happy Father's Day, lads.

I'm just in from my best round of the round of the season. Shot an 84. I was looking at breaking 80 for the first time when the oil started leaking as I had triples bogies sandwiched around a par on holes 11, 12, 13.. I righted the ship and brought it home with a birdie and 3 consecutive pars including a short sided sand save on 18 that left me with a 6 footer for par. Which I nailed.

Oh, and I'll take Badds and the Pteradactyl.
