Anybody know how he got out of the 4 game suspension? Did he kiss some babies or send Goddell some flowers or something? Not complaining, just real suprised.

Jared Allen was planning to treat the first month of the Chiefs’ schedule as the offseason. He was going to head back to Arizona and work out with a trainer much as he did during the spring.

Allen, a starting defensive end, will have to rethink that strategy after learning that the NFL — after hearing his appeal — reduced his season-opening suspension from four games to two.

Allen will still miss the Sept. 9 season opener in Houston and the following Sunday’s game at Chicago. But he will now be available to play in the Sept. 23 home opener against Minnesota and, more important, the Chiefs’ first division game the following Sunday at San Diego.

“My whole approach has changed now,” Allen said. “With the whole four weeks, I was going to head back to Arizona and train as if I was in the offseason. Four weeks is quite a long time. Two weeks is a totally different game. Most likely I’ll just stay in Kansas City and stay ready to play.

“I’m excited about this. It changes training camp for me. It will change the way I approach preseason.”

The reason for the reduction wasn’t clear. Allen said he hasn’t read the letter he received from the NFL, which has yet to publicly announce his suspension. Chiefs officials were unavailable Sunday.

The suspension for violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy stems from Allen’s two DUI charges in Johnson County. He entered a diversion program in connection with the first charge and pleaded no contest to the second.

Allen will not be paid for the two games he misses.

Since this one was reduced to 2 games, is he gone for the whole year still the next time? or will that go back up to 4 games? Hopefully we wont have to worry about it though.

Note to Rest of the NFL:

Troubled players have been concerned about the way the commissioner has brought the hammer down on wrongdoers in the NFL.

The reduced suspension for Allen says that players can make up for bad behavior and punishment by demonstrating legitimate and believable change of behavior and direction. This is positive.

Goodell must be a good daddy too.

He won an appeal.

If he gets busted again, it'll be 16 games.

Anyone thinks this effects his future contract negotiations with KC, being that he's playin in 2 more games this season to prove his worth?

It doesn't really affect it in the future. The Chiefs already know what he's capable of, playing 2 extra games isn't gonna change that.

I don't think the 4-game suspension was ever the issue, it's the fact that he's facing a potential 3rd strike and 16-game suspension.

yeah. But more games in 2007 to grade him. ViQueens and @SD

We know what he's can Do.... SD has to be the factor game of the two extras since road / division game.

His "grade" is already in. Those 2 extra games aren't gonna show us anything we haven't already seen.

We know he's good.

I see the suspension was reduced but also noticed JA is only getting paid for one more game because the other game is a fine.

You know, that may well be true.

However, he is reportedly in the best shape that he's ever been right now, and that might well translate to increased productivity.

That doesn't really have anything to do with the suspension though.

They don't just look at the 16-game season, they look at it game by game as well.

If his productivity goes up, it will be just as easy to see in 12, 14, or 16 games.

The one thing the lesser suspension might affect though is whether or not Allen is "cured". You can bet his agent is telling the Chiefs right freaking now that the REASON Goodell went soft on Jared is because he feels that Jared has been "cured" and has little chance of being a repeat offender.
