Tom Watson has a 1 shot lead over Stewart Ginn after 9 holes in the final round. At -4, Watson has a 1 shot lead and 4 shots on 3rd place Mark O'Meara.

What a great week. Last Sunday, Paddy wins it, loses it, then snatches it back from Garcia.

Today, Kansas city's 3rd franchise holds tight and wins the Open.

Another nice rainbow of a day.

Historically, is Tommy Watson underrated?

I don't think so, milkman. Tom seems to still get much respect for his accomplishments as a player. He's been a great ambassador for the game also.

IMO, he gets his due.

I don't think so.

The guy had, and is recognized as having the best run in golf between 75 and 85. He lost his PGA putting touch and that was all she wrote.

You just wonder what type of damage he could have done had he been able to keep the putter in check. I'd guess at least 2-3 more majors would have been highly attainable.

The reason I ask is because whenever I watch a major golfing event, and the announcers start to wax nostalgic about some of the "great" golfers it seems that Watson is invariably mentioned as an afterthought after the likes of Ben Crenshaw and Johnny Miller, whose records pale by comparison.

I understand that completely. Especially this year. Johnny Miller got much play this year due to the return of the US Open to Oakmont, where he shot his final round 63.

Crenshaw, while a great player and sentimental favorite after winning The Masters a few weeks after his golf mentor died, was never the player Tom was in his prime.

For several seasons, and even this weekend, the announcers mentioned numerous times that when Watson hits the ball, he strikes it so cleanly, that it makes a much different sound than any of his competitors. And because of Tom W's bad hip, he rarely practices any more.
