this is where the original cut-ins came from, in case you haven't seen clips on CNN and FOX News.

I kind of have a mix of empathy and sympathy for the man but it's overcome with hilarity when he starts shouting BARBARIC in the middle of otherwise cohesive sentences

5 minutes of Byrd is all I could endure. Why in the heck are the people of West Virginia still electing this guy?

I agree with Mr. jAZ. The music is great. Anyone know who/what it is?

I have no idea, Mr. HemiEd. I can only assume it is because the people of West Virginia are ... BARBARIC!!!

He does seem to be past his prime. However, I watched the entire speach, which is more than I can say about reading Whitlock articles.

In his prime, The Distinguished Senate Historian said things like this:

Byrd commented on the 1945 controversy about racially integrating the military. Byrd, when he was 28 years old, wrote to segregationist Senator Theodore Bilbo, of Mississippi, vowing never to serve in such a military:

"Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

Ah, well, that explains your original post. I understand your disdain for the man.
