I'd make some little quip and look over and he would have this perplexed stare going, and I'd have to say, "It was a joke." He would then nod and say, "Okay", and think about it, and then shrug and go back to work. It was quite offputting.

Years ago, working as a bartender, there was a husband and wife who were regular customers. The wife was very friendly but the husband was quiet and always serious. Dour is probably a good word to describe him. Anyway, one night I ask them if they'd seen a certain movie. The wife tells me no. So I tell them it's kinda like this other movie but they haven't seen that either. The wife tells me her husband doesn't like those kind of movies. "What kind?", I ask. "Made up ones", she says. Huh? "My husband doesn't like anything that's made up. Movies, books, TV, anything. He only likes stuff that's real".

Odd way to go through life, they sure miss out on a lot.

Humor is humor. It's never too stupid to "get."

On the contrary, there is highbrow and lowbrow humor, and if one particular joke references a piece of knowledge or culture or circumstance that is outside of our own experience, then we might miss a good joke that the more literate or experienced crowd might share.

On the other hand, we can't possibly miss a joke that is beneath us. We always think that we're smarter than the joke, and that's exactly what makes us funny.
