I would say that is probably true. But it isn't a big surprise for anyone for LJ to be ready to go by opening day.

That's what ESPN said in relation to the story about Priest not coming off the PUP list. That Carl wasn't there to weigh in on the decision because he was involved in LJ negotiations.

I don't think the Chiefs minded a bit that LJ missed camp.

Did the last 2 preseason games scare Carl into getting the deal done? I would say that LJ and his agent have moved their demands much more than CP has moved his original offer. Tony G said that CP will "wait you out". He also said that CP is "very patient". The reports that I've heard are that the offer that the Chiefs have on the table now isn't too much different that the original offer.

That's how I've viewed it the whole time. I actually haven't paid much attention to it (unlike the national media, who seemed to think it was dooming the Chiefs). I've just assumed neither side had a sense of urgency until now. If this week passes and nothing happens, I might start to get a little concerned.

But if he signs in the next day or two, it will pretty much confirm what I've thought.

After catching up on Hard Knocks.... It is clearly evident that Carl is only concerned with winning now and being a sub .500 GM than he is about winning a superbowl...

Fortunately, when it comes to the QB decision at least, it appears that Carl will give the head coach the final say.

didnt appear that way to me... To me he looked scare and unsure of what the coach was wanting to do...

Kept saying "we want to play the QB that gives us the best chance to win now"

That line right there says all you need to say about the Chiefs and their lack of anything meaningful during Carls tenure...

I never got the impression that LJ had any real plan to hold out during the season....I'd assume that if either party were scared that it wouldn't get wrapped up prior to the season that there would have been more public jousting, more leaks, etc...but that's just my hunch.

The last report I read was that the Chiefs went from $14mil guaranteed to $19mil and LJ came down from $28mil to $23mil. If true, that's a $5mil move by both sides.

I think King Carl will do whats best to put butts in the seats. The butts in the seats overwhelmingly want Croyle. Herm obviously wants Croyle. It's a win-won for the King. Croyle flops he says I was just giving my coach his guy. He's successful, he goes on ESPN and acts like King Carl and says told you so. Croyle gets the starting job.

No great shock. I'd expect to see him at Arrowhead Thursday. That's Carl's general MO in situations like this one; it'll be the final sign that the deal's imminent.

I always expected him to sign before the third or fourth preseason game and not until.

It helps us to save wear on him, he doesn't want to go work through training camp in River Falls with everyone else. He signs in time for the season. Everybody wins.

LJ came to KC because he was not on Hard Knocks last week. He thought, "If they won't come to me, I will go to them." So currently he is playing Madden '08 with the HBO films guys.

He's trying to be the "voice of reason" in his mind. In the end, he'll step aside and Herm will make the decision.

Carl has always given his coaches alot of power - one needs only look at the difference between the drafts under Mary, Vermeil, and now Herm.

The problem is that he's hiring coaches that share, at least in part, his mentality. Even Vermeil was overly loyal to veterans.

My prediction from the beginning of training camp was that LJ would sign this week and went as far as picking NLT than 22 Aug. He will be standing on the sideline in street clothes watching the New Orleans game, smiling about how good it is to have a new contract and that he is in shape and ready to get to work. He will have a new contract and be rested.
