Considering selling one of my cars there. Do they give you Blue Book value? Are they fair?

Anyone ever sold a car at one of these places??

I sold my '99 Cougar there several years ago. I got a fair price. Don't remember the details, but IIRC it was at or near book value (if I'd really gotten screwed, I'd certainly remember details better).

Also, I sold my car without buying one from them.

I helped a car-challenged friend of mine sell his honda accord there a few years back. They gave him way more than he could have sold it for. I think the key is to play the game and pick out a car you "want to buy" and then see what they will give you for your car.

I got an offer on my old truck from them. I didn't end up selling it there, but the process only took about 15-20 minutes and the offer was slightly lower than I was hoping for but not a real lowball price.

I didn't end up buying a new car for a couple more weeks, so that time it didn't work out, but I would sell to them in the future possibly. If you try to trade your car in on something new the dealer is just going to try to squeeze you with it, moving money all over the deal so you never see what you are actually getting.

I got a quote for my Taurus there a couple of years ago, they were way low compared to blue book and compared to other prices I had seen in the paper.

We shopped our 2-year old Highlander there, but after all was said and done, we got a better offer from the dealership, Deberg_1990.

They had a guy named Peterson who offered us 19 million.

Just to warn you ahead of time, they offer "wholesale" prices rather than true trade-in prices.

They offered me $6000 for my 02 Jetta 1.8T a few months back, so I laughed in their face and ended up selling it on Auto Trader for a little over $10,000.

Sold my Pathfinder there a few years back. Got a very fair price from what I can remember.

I've sold two vehicles to Carmax, both I inherited so I wasn't looking to make a trade and I didn't want to deal with running an ad and having people come to my house.

In 2005 I sold a 1998 Chevy van with all the options and only 8,000 miles. Kelly Blue Book listed retail at $13,000 and wholesale at $11,000, Carmax offered and gave me $11,000.

Two months ago I sold a 1998 Hyundai Elantra wagon with only 14,000 miles but had a dent on the back hatchdoor. Kelly listed retail at $3600 and wholesale at $2400, and Carmax offered and I accepted $2000.

It takes about 90 minutes for the entire process. You go inside the showroom and tell a salesman what you want to do. He'll take your keys and tell you to go to the waiting room while the appraiser has a look at your vehicle. After about 30 - 45 minutes the salesman will bring you to his office and show you on his computer screen exactly what Carmax will pay you. If you say yes, you go to the cashier where you will sign the title and then go to the service waiting room. While your waiting they move your car into the maintenance shop and remove your license plates. Eventually you go back to the cashier and sign some more papers and they'll hand you the check and your old tags. It's a very simple process, of course you can probably get more selling to another private party but that's the cost of convenience.

I have never sold a car to Carmax, but intuition tells me that they would be slightly below blue book.

I have always and will continue to sell my car via the KC Star or AutoTrader.

I sold my father in laws truck after he passed to Carmax. They gave an actual Fair Blue Book price. I was shocked.

I would not hesitate at all in recommending them.

I've bought vehicles there with no problem. I think they give a fair price if you want to sell your vehicle. But, if you want to do the work, you'll get more by selling it yourself. But, that's a hassle and can take a while.

I sold a Mitz Eclipse there in 04 and got about 3 grand more than 2 Olathe dealerships offered as a trade in. I was VERY surprised. But it was at the beginning of the spring and they said that that style will sell quickly, which is why they offered more. It depends on if they think that they can turn around and sell it quickly or not.

My experience at Carmax was the absolute best that I've ever had at a dealership, and trust me, I've had a lot of recent experience at dealerships. I have a bad habit of getting bored with cars/trucks and have traded in multiple times. Now, I've got to keep the one I have for a couple years at least. But I will go back there next time. It's a very quick process compared to spending the day at Olathe Ford or wherever.

I've also heard a couple people didn't like their experience there, but I know I did.
