View Full Version : Worst "celebrity" sighting you've ever had...

RINGLEADER had a thread the other day about some actress from "The Replacements".

Tonight, my wife spotted this guy (far right)... at a gelato place in Tucson.

http://www.artistjdog.com/PromoPic2.jpg

He's from the VH1 show "The Pickup Artist". He's not even the star of that show. He's the #3 guy.

So what's the lamest, most embarassing ("hey I recognize that guy" and no one knows who that guy is) moment?

Heh. I had a similar experience in a Walmart in Jefferson City when I was a kid. Governor Teasdale came in with a couple of guys who I assumed were bodyguards. He was unshaven and wearing sweats and a trenchcoat. I remember my mom commenting that he looked like a goddamn bum. :D

Also helped George Knapp (local news anchor, but is in lots of national UFO stuff) put groceries in his car.

When I was in high school working at Nickerson Farms restaurant in Platte City Governor Teasdale came in with (possibly the same) two bodyguards and ate. I cooked for him. The odd thing was that the bodyguards sat at a different table and tried to act like they weren't with him. It was pretty obvious they were.

Another time, and I'm showing my age here, Bulldog Bob Brown, who was a pro wrestler, came in and ate. I guess that would qualify as a "worst" celebrity sighting.

I saw an old looking Richard Chamberlain at Border's here in Honolulu once a few years ago. He lives here.

I saw Eric Warfield at the Ameristar Casino once, playing blackjack in the high limit room. I wanted to tell him that he was the worst impersonator of an NFL cornerback I had ever seen, but he had his posse here with him. I think this was a few months before he got cut by the Chiefs.

The most tragic celebrity sighting I ever had was at the Republic Plaza food court in Denver in about 1990-91 or so.

I was munching on my slice of sausage pizza and reading my free weekly tabloid, when I glanced at the guy next to me. He was sucking down mall Chinese and reading the same free weekly tabloid.

It was Gart Hart. No secret service, no entourage, no nothing. Just a guy who could have been President of the United States scarfing his beef and broccoli.

I've seen and/or spoken to a few others on occasion, some politicians, some sports figures, some entertainers, but I just couldn't bring myself to ask any of the questions I would have wanted to pose to the former Sen. Hart.

I just let him eat in peace, assuming he has peace at all after the chance he shot to hell.

So I was at a bar in Hollywood (White Horse, I think) with a buddy and we start talking to a few people at a table. It turns out that they are a bunch of people from the porn industry. The main girl in the group's performance name was "Doomy Moore".

After about an hour of talking and drinking with these people, I turn around and realize I'm sitting back-to-back (at the next round top) with Jason Lee. Spent the rest of the night talking to a crazy porn star and a B-list celebrity (who since has gotten a little cooler).

About a month later, we went to the porn shop and rented one of Doomy Moore's movies to see if it was really her. It was.

I went to Mazatlan, Mexico (sp?) when I was in the Navy and ended up drunkenly puking up pink mush in a hotel room (don't know whose) within forty-five minutes of setting my foot on dry land (a record for me) and managed to stumble back to the ship sometime later (with a little help) to sleep it off because I had duty the next day. I paid a guy $40 to stand my watch and woke up at the crack of Noon. I wandered to the mess deck (cafeteria) to get something to eat and ran into a little crowd. Apparently the actor who played the Hispanic LT. on Hill Street Blues was vacationing there and came aboard to visit us. A few guys asked him questions about the show (it had been canceled already) and he jabbered with us for a while then shook our hands and left.

Buying a magazine at the Tucson airport once, I looked over next to me and there was Al Michaels. Back in the day when he was on MNF and it was still good. Al Freakin' Michaels...I remember listening to him call the Miracle on Ice game.

And I choked. I wanted to say hello and tell him how much I liked his work, but all I could get out of my mouth was "gahh". He just looked at me like I was the biggest idiot he'd ever run into.

Most of my minor celebrity sightings come at the movie theater. I sat behind Texas Governor Ann Richards when I saw Steel Magnolias and a few rows away from KCMO TV9 news anchor Larry Moore when I watched Saving Private Ryan. But my best minor/obscure celebrity sighting has happened on several occasions when Bill Kersten has torn my ticket at the movie theater in Liberty, MO.

For those who don't know the name, Bill Kersten was the voice of wrestling (http://www.harleyrace.com/kersten.htm) back in the days when guys like Rufus R. Jones, "Handsome" Harley Race, and "Bulldog" Bob Brown would grapple at Memorial Hall for Kansas City's All Star Wrestling. He also later served as the mayor of Liberty (in the 90's I believe). I don't know if he owns the theater in Liberty or if he just works there to mingle with the people, but he's always got a smile on his face.

Worked a part time job where the middle kid from "Home Improvemet" (Johnathon something Thomas - or something, can't rememebr the name) was also working - mainly going on stage and letting the little girls ooh and aah.

Met Larry Moore when his daughter was working for awhile with me.

Fred Broski at a bar on 39th.

Used to live below John Bilyew (sp?) and his wife. Long time ago. Mid 70's. (Probably only the old guys will know him)

I was on Tory and old Gus. I visited Chuck Davis on set during the channel 5 afternoon movies. Olden days - mid 60's.

One was with one of those has beens from 'Lost Boys". He came into my studio one day., all coked up and sweating, trying to get me to listen to some band he created. He was so fkd up...I almost felt sorry for him.

Another one was Timmy T, the loser who sang "One More Try" back in the 80's. What a loser this dude is. He makes millions off some cheesy song and then blows all the cash. When I lived in Fresno, CA, he also lived there. One night, I saw him at a Denny's, trying to be all Rico Suave with some chicks, carrying around a cell phone...back when they were the size of a whale...we sat across the restaurant laughing our assoff at this guy. Sure enough, out comes Gretzky and starts signing. He is wearing these tight brown leather pants - my buddy (he is/was a crazy mofo) yells out "Hey Wayne, what do you think the lads in Brantford (his home town) would think of those pants?" - Wayne gave us the dirtiest look you could imagine and went back to signing autographs - absolutely hilarious - and I am SURE he never wore those pants again......

I met Randy "Macho Man" Savage at a Bob Evans in St Petersburg. He was nice but his eyes looked crazy(probably from the roids). I walked by Tommy Morrison at a Chicago Bulls preseason game back in 97 in Lawrence and I saw Tommy Lasorda walk by me when I was in the beer line for a Jacksonville Suns game(Dodgers AA team). Back when I was a customer service rep for the phone company, I set up Eric Lindross's phone service back when he was a rookie for the the Flyers.

Only the first 2 I would classify as "worsts".

I saw M.J. from the Real World this past weekend at a bar. Some girl asked him if he was M.J., and he said no, I just look like him, and then turned around and laughed at his buddy.

Pretty lame celebrity sighting, but it was my first in Nashville.
I think the lame part is that you know who, "M.J. from the Real World" is.

I pissed next to Furman Bisher, fossilized sports columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (if you've lived in the South, you know who he is), in the men's room at the 1989 Gator Bowl. On the way out, I passed Joe Theismann walking in.

My wifes cousin is "Richard Christy" on the Howard Stern show. He comes home for Thanksgiving and Christmas and generally all he does is sleep the entire time.

I have another good one. My roommate was friends with the KU basketball players and Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison came over to our apartment once and had a bit to drink and they stole our neighbors couch that they had outside

Couple of years back when the SB was in Houston, I went downtown for the party. Some friends and I were waiting in line outside a bar when this guy just cuts in front of us at the door. I didn't notice who it was at first so I said "the line's back there", he turns around and says "I'm VIP". I start yelling hey Sterling what's up? He doesn't say anything. I said, Tony G. is better anyway. He turns aroung smiles and says "you wish", it was Shannon Sharpe.

So the summer after my freshman year at the UofA, I came home and worked most of the summer for the back-stage catering firm at what is now Verizon Wireless Ampitheater.

So we catered all the bands that came that summer.

I worked Lollapalooza and got to meet and get my backstage pass autographed by Coolio and Beck. I also talked to the drummer of Hole, sat next to (and cleaned up after) Sinead O'Conner.

I also worked the Van Halen concernt. Got to set up their dressing rooms and clean up their $1000 $20 bill wrappers.

Got to hangout on stage (off to the side) for all of the shoes. Closest up was REO Speedwagon.

I took catering on one of the band's busses... but I don't remember who.

I also prepared the wine for Yani and shook Reba McEntyre's hand as she walked out after her show.

Because it's like his mom always says "when you put the cat in the washer..."

Oh yeah... this one didn't suck... but I got Barack Obama's autograph at a 2006 campaign visit he made to Phx to support the Dem Senate challenger to Jon Kyle.

Oh, and I hosted Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano at a work event last year. Introduced her, sat at the the table with her... handled Q&A with the audience.

She's not really a "celebrity" but it was pretty cool.

I saw Brian Dennehy at the old Dairy Queen that used to be at 95th and Antioch several years ago....a very large, large man.

My roomate tells a great story about how he was on a plane with Rodney Dangerfield 10-15 years ago...and how he was so wasted with the girls he was with....he shat himself on the plane! The stewardesses made him go to the toilet to try to clean himself up...but the stench on the plane was unbearable (my roommate said).

Ouch.

I don't know if I've had any bad celebrity sightings.

Some were pretty weird. I met a lot of famous coaches and athletes in the late 80's early 90's when I made videos for FCA. Met Mike Singleterry, Karl Mecklenberg, Raymond Berry, Tom Landry, Tom Osborne. All nice guys. Mecklenberg said he hated playing at Arrowhead more than anywhere else, that was comforting.

Met Tony Danza standing in line for theater tickets in Times Square.

Met Don Faurot in an elevator in Atlanta.

Met George Brett in Winsteads on the Plaza. I was on a field trip with a bunch of 6th graders, and he went outside and took a picture with all the kids in front of their school bus. That was one of his "non-asshole" moments, I suppose.

Met Hank Williams Jr, Judd Nelson, Lynn Swann, OJ Simpson, and three or four Missouri Governors from my seat at Arrowhead.

Hung out with Ike Skelton, US Congressman, on serveral occasions. Sat next to Mayor Cleaver at a Royals Game.

Met Denny Matthews at a grocery store check out line in Independence.

Met McLean Stevenson at the 1985 world series. He was a Cards fan.

Uh, this is "worst" celebrity sighting, not name-dropping 101.

If Mickey Mantle peed on your shoe while you were standing at the next urinal, that would count.

Mickey Mantle and his family rented a house in Glen Rock NJ from my family for 4 years in the late fifties.I was there with MM jr when he broke his leg.Too young to remember that. Did meet him and Roger Maris a few years later accross the street from my home. The 1964 AL rookie of the year lived accross the street from me. Met players from the Yankees,Orioles,Astros and A's.
