I thought we might get some good stories out of this. I never have been fired but then I've never had a job. I've always been self employed.

When I was 18 I worked at a gas station. I bought myself beer all the time. One night I bought it (Friday before the Super Bowl) and on the way out the door I got busted by the MIP police who learned that I worked there. They forced the owner of the gas station to lose his liquor license for the weekend (the weekend of the SUPER BOWL).

He fired me...angrily. And everytime I go in there still, he calls me a cocksucker.

Hey, I had two choices when I worked there.

1. Be a good little worker bee.

Or

2. Be the one that can get the beer for the parties and the chicks totally love you for it.

I went with the latter.

I worked at a video store once and totally forgot about a company meeting. So I come in the next day as normal and take care of all my opening duties and have the store ready to open when my manager( a real bitch on wheels) calls me and informs me that I'm being let go because I had missed the mandatory meeting.

I was so pissed that she had let me work for an hour getting the store ready but other than a few parting words went on my way.

I worked at All American Indoor Sports (indoor soccer complex) up in the "Pub." Really, it was just a glorified snack bar.

Anyway, they had video games that they leased. And the machines only took tokens. However, kids would constantly dump quarters in there and the machines would eat them. At the end of every work shift, I would empty the machines and take all the "eaten" quarters. Typically I'd walk out of there with around $10. Sometimes more.

I got caught by my boss and he fired me on the spot.

I argued with him about it. Everyone who worked there did it. It was kind of like you were entitled to the quarters if you worked that evening.

I'm sure he did it. There's no way he just left the quarters in there.

I worked at a gas station at 15.....and did a little of what you described.

Here's the part I find troubling with your story. "every time I go back in there, he calls me a cocksucker"......uh...why do business with an owner that calls you a cocksucker?

Here are 2 ideas that will stop that. 1. Don't go in there any more. 2. Go upside his effing head.

I was fired from a job in the early 90's for telling the boss not to call me a cocksucker again. I'll wager he had an icepack for lunch.

Back when I was 25 and had just been named supervisor of our dept, I apparently called one of my employees a "F'n idiot". This stupid bitch was probably the dumbest girl I've ever known, made all kinds of mistakes that would result in angry clients calling me to complain, but her mom happened to be a director. The bad thing is, as much as I would've liked to call her that, I don't remember ever saying it, at least not to her face.

Probably ended up being the best career move I ever made though.

My buddy and I split a hit and a half of real good white blotter (acid) before our wait shift. I was doing pretty good holding it together till he tells me to check out this fat chick sitting in his section who ordered 2 of everything on the menu and a diet coke. We weren't able to stop laughing long enough to keep from being fired on the spot.

I got bored, and would scratch off a few lottery tickets in my spare time. It got pretty bad one day. I didn't win, and I didn't have to money to pay for the tickets. I ended up voiding off different items that had been sold and ringing the difference up under lottery. Worked like a charm. I got to where I would do that quite often. Not too hard to figure out once they went through the receipt rolls coming off the register. I got questioned about transactions voided during my shifts. I fessed up (no need to lie about it). Got fired. It was really stupid. I think I've spent about $10 on anything lottery since then (and that was 10 years ago).

I came close at Golden Corral in high school.

I had been there a year and was a crew leader. New management came in and was on a huge power trip (even though they call you a manager, you still work at Golden Corral). I remember telling one of them I had planned on taking a day off and going to the Park Hill/Blue Springs South football game, and he was all "leadership this" and "a crew leader wouldn't do that". So, I went, and a couple of weeks later a former manager there got me a job at the Majestic Steakhouse.

I told GC I could still work during the week, just not on Friday/Saturdays anymore. I went in the next Wednesday after school and I was scheduled to work that night but not at all the next week. I asked the pr*ck about it and he said "Well, just come in tonight and we can talk about it.. it was probably just a mistake" ...of course, just wanting me to work my last shift before they fired me.

So, I called a friend of mine who had worked there at one point, and we went and ate there that night. It's not nearly as funny of a story now as when I was a teenager, but the look on the managers' faces when they saw us in line was priceless.

Lets see here...

I was 19 when I got fired from a credit card collections department. Basically my job was to call everyone who was late on their payments and demand payment. I was a stupid 19 year old kid back then so all I did was work and smoke pot. At the beginning of the job they gave me 80 hours of sick leave to use. Well after a while I would stay up all night smoking...and then call in sick the next day because I didn't feel like coming to work. Well I ended up using my 80 hours of sick leave over the period of 2 months. They weren't very happy with that. So my supervisor brings me in the office and tells me that if I call in sick one more time that they're going to fire me. So I go back to my desk and everything was fine for about 2 weeks.

Well during the two week period I was joking around with all of my coworkers about if they fired me. I was telling them that I was going to chokeslam my boss into a table.

So two weeks go by....and I wake up one morning and I'm freaking sick as hell. So I call in and talk to my boss and she says that everything is fine and not to worry. So I come in the next day....and I work my 8 hours and just about when I'm ready to clock out my boss calls me into her office. They tell me that they warned me and that now I've been officially terminated. To make matters worse...someone told her that if they fired me that I was going to assault her. So I got walked out by security because she was scared for her life.

I did get fired from my paper route, when I was 11. The SOBs would always hide when I came around to collect, so I just quit getting up in time to deliver the morning paper.

Then I would make their storm doors shake and rattle, when I hit them hard with the paper. Damn that was fun, fold the paper into a square and bang the door as hard as I could. :D

****ers wanted the paper on time, but didn't want to pay for it. My route mangler agreed with them, so I was relieved of my duties and lost money.

After my sophomore year of KU, I worked for Lawrence Parks & Rec as a maintenance guy for the city softball & soccer fields, as well as trail/parks maintenance. With about two weeks left in the summer, they asked me to come in at midnight on a saturday so that we could prep up the softball fields for a girls tourney that started in the morning. By the time midnight rolls around, I've had about 15 beers and consumed a large portion of jager, but drag my ass out there anyways. Needless to say, the "supervisor" said he would be reporting me on Monday and that I would surely be fired, so I said I'll do you one better and just quit now. I vaguely remember writing a "resignation letter" in the office before I left, but it must have been pretty funny, because a buddy of mine that worked there said it was tacked in the managers office for about 6 months.

1. It's the cheapest place to fill your propane tank

2. There are still some workers that have been there (since 10 years!) that were there when I was there. They like me and give me free sodas if I am ever in the area.

So, I only ever give the owner twelve bucks every 3 months or so, and I don't mind being called a cocksucker to get a free soda. :)

A few people in the last church decided they didn't want us there anymore. They got together at the business meeting where we were being voted on (we had to have 2/3 of the membership's vote to stay), brought some "Absentee" ballots and got just enough to oust us. Oddly enough, in the board meeting that followed they got upset with me because, as they told me they would allow us to be absent in the next month or two if I had to preach a tryout somewhere else, I told them this meant that I would NOT be continuing to preach there and I felt it was poor taste to fire someone then expect them to keep working.

They hadn't planned on needing to find a replacement quite so fast - which is not an easy thing to do in that part of kansas.

I was also sorta fired when I worked fast food. I had worked at the Wendy's on the Bus loop 70 in Columbia for several years at this point. One night a manager that I HAD been friends with - we even did a lot of weight lifting together, got to mouthing at me. I thought he was joking and fired back. He fired me, I still thought he was joking until he grabed the stuff out of my hands and told me to leave. I headed accross town to another store where I knew the head manager at and had a job in less than 15 minutes - I even finished out the night working there. The next day when the head manager of the first store came in and learned that the assistant had fired one of his best employees without talking to him first, he ripped the guy pretty hard, made him appologize, and tried to talk me into coming back but I refused. In the paperwork, it turned into a store transfer so I got to keep my hourly wage.

I've never been fired. I've been laid off twice, though, once at the Dairy Queen in Rolla and once at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis.

The Dairy Queen thing was temporary because they always closed down for the winter, so I would've been rehired in the spring, but ambitious 15 year-olds don't sit around and wait for stuff like that. They were the only place that could hire 15 year-olds legally, and they paid $1.90 an hour when minimum wage was $3.35. I had to work for my dad for a couple of months at his restaurant in Jefferson City (with a long, long commute) before I could turn 16 and get a good, solid minimum wage job back in Rolla.

The McDonnell layoff was kind of interesting. I got a letter on the last workday before Christmas saying that I would be laid off if my project got canceled. Then in January one of my coworkers got a call from his wife near the end of the day saying, "The news is saying that your project has been canceled." (It was a big project.) They didn't bother telling the employees, so I went home and heard on the news that the layoffs were in force. So the next day I came in and got the ol' "gather your belongings and exit to the left side of the ride" speech over the intercom. No severance pay or anything, however they told me that they would pay me for two more weeks as long as I kept showing up. Then they took my ID badge so I couldn't get into the building. I went over to a non-classified building and sat at the desk of a guy I knew who was on vacation and who sat right outside the department head's office, just so I could get paid. Then I had the bright idea of transferring to the Mesa helicopter plant, where I knew there was a job opening in my department and no layoffs. The department head chuckled at my cleverness and gave me that job, and then within a week they announced another layoff and rescinded the offer. They said they would give me the job yet again if "no better candidate applied", and at that point I told them that they could keep it. So I think I got laid off twice and declined a job offer within a week.

I'm not sure if this constitutes being fired or not.........

I was working for a three person Architectural Firm for about a week and half. It was about 60 miles from where I lived, and after about a week my car started to act up and couldn't take the drive everyday. At the time I was a student and with the little amount of money he was paying me I couldn't exactly put my pay towards fixing the car or getting a new one.

After about three days of trying to figure out what to do, I told him what was going on and that I wouldn't be able to continue working for them. I told him that I would still stay for two weeks and finish what I started with them, but he told me that I just needed to finish out the week.

About an hour later he came over me to me and said I didn't have to bother coming back the next day.............then about 3 minutes later he comes storming over to my area and tells me to pack up my sh*t and get the f*ck out. He then escorted me out of the office and told me that the career office at my college was going to hear about this.

A few days later I get a call from the Career Center asking what the hell I did to piss this guy off. I told them what happened and I was told that I had to write a letter to this guy and the rest of the firm (all two other people) informing them of how sorry I was about what happened and how this shouldn't be a reflection of the students at the school. I basically told the woman on the phone to blow it out her ass because I didn't do anything wrong, the guy just over reacted.

She then said that if I didn't write the letter I would fail for the sememster, and would probably end up failing out of school because of it.

So I sucked it up and wrote the letter of apology. The company then with held my pay until I submitted a bill of hours I worked. They changed my status from employee to "consultant" without my knowledge.

Basically it became a messy situation...........now did I quit or was I fired? I still have no idea what the hell happened.

I worked at a grocery store with 5 other kids from my class for about 3 years in HS. We all were fired for one reason or another in a month, and replaced with 14 year olds at half the pay.

Myself and another guy were fired for "destroying produce"......ie, carving a jack-o-lantern into a potato from the produce trash, because we had to wait 2 extra hours to help the new "i've worked here a month and am your boss because my fat sister is going out with the manager's d-bag son, but can't do the job" guy.

He specifically said "go to the back and dick off, all your work is done".....and then tattled.

So, I was fired over a potato that would have cost $.13, if it weren't in the garbage, which it was.

The asst manager said he had a "zero tollerance policy on theft"...and then a horrendous 5pm arguement erupted for all to hear.

FFW10-15 years.

The asst manager had left not long after and came back to town as the manager. Long story short, a month after he got back, something came up from his previous job and he was being fired. many of the local citizens put up a "save joe" campaign.

When I heard about it, I immediately composed a letter to the president of the company, revealing his management practices, and his quote....and encouraged them to hold him to the same standard.

He called me, we talked a few minutes, and he fired the prick.

we're even now. He can come off my list.

almost 20 years ago - Ruby Tuesdays.

Dude, thats funny without the acid.

I got fired once. I was working for a political consulting company and the boss brings me and this other dude in to give us a pep talk. He starts telling me how he has 5 kids and house to pick up so we all need to work hard for the months leading up to the end of the year. I told him that I don't give a shit about putting food on his table for him and his family, I only care about mine. The minute that flew out of my mouth I knew I was gone so I continued to let him have it.

To this day I make his life hell, leaving that shitty company was the best thing I ever did.

Well I've been fired a few times.

The first time it was by my retarded PD (Don Oneal, but I called him Dick Oneal) at at an Alternative radio station. We didnt like each other, so he fired me. He would steal from jocks, lie, cheat. basically he was the scum of the earth. the type of boss you'd love to get back. Well I did.

After he fired me, for no reason BTW, we just didnt like each other, I went across the street to the rock station and kicked their ass. At a Tool show, we were all in front of the venue trying to "Own" the spot. Basically a radio war inthe streets. My station had this big blow 2 story mascot called "the Wild HAre". This thing towered over everything. We also had huge speakers on a big ass army flatbed. We owned the street war.

Anyways, I was live on the air from the venue, talking about the show and Dick walked across the street right in the path of my speakers--and my wrath. "Hey look, "I said onthe air, "its Dick Oneal" before I knew it he was on my back screaming something..it didnt stop me "Hey Dick why dont you make yourself useful while you are back there? Oh wait, that right, you dont have anything that makes you useful, my bad." Again, on the air.

This pissed him of so bad, that he tried to cut the cord to our power line, federal offense by the way, and he got arrested. As he was being put in the cop car, I ran up with a camera "Say Cheese Dick". We had the pic of him being in the car on our website for awhile. It was beautiful!

got "fired" from a summer job after my senior year in high school. i worked in the warehouse of a lab every summer and by my third, had acquired some "rank" in the warehouse. at least as much rank as one can earn. the assistant manager had told me that it was okay for me to use the internet during breaks, even though company policy said otherwise. one day i'm sitting at the computer during my 3pm break and these two guys from IT come marching in all official-like and ask me to step away from the computer. one guy types and clicks away for about 5 minutes like he's doing important business, looks at me and says "just as I thought". an hour later i'm in the warehouse managers office getting yelled at for slacking off on the job and messing around on the internet while i'm supposed to be working. now i only had 2 weeks left anyways, so when he handed me the write-up slip, i crumpled it into a ball and shot it into his trash can and thanked him for the 3 years. clocked out and have never gone back. my mom works at this lab though and tells me some of the holdovers still ask what happened to me.

now i could've told my manager that the assistant manager told me it was okay, but for some reason i didn't. i guess i felt bad for him because it was obvious that he needed the job more than i did.

I was doing ad sales for a start-up newspaper just outside of West Des Moines in the mid-90’s. The area was growing rapidly but businesses were slow to take interest in a new paper. I was let go after about 6 months of limited success.

I don’t feel too bad because I was able to find a job back in KC and the paper is now defunct. My in-laws live in Des Moines so I would check on the paper occasionally and it looked like they couldn’t hold on to any sales people.

Air Traffic Control? I had a good friend get the same axe. But I thought that happened much later?

You win, I was an air traffic controller with the FAA. I started in the Army and went to ATC school at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. I finished my military service three years later as an E-5 with one overseas tour in Korea. Shortly thereafter I was hired by the FAA as a GS 7 and went to the Academy in Oklahoma City, I then worked three years at St. Petersburg-Clearwater Florida Tower and then five years at Pensacola Florida Approach Control where at the time of the strike I was a GS 13.

It was definitely 1981, in fact that was one of the reasons for our union losing. The strike had been in planning for a couple of years, it began during Carter's administration, however he didn't win re-election and union leaders didn't anticipate what that would mean.

Reagan was wounded in June in an assassination attempt and with the earlier return of the Iran hostages, all in his first year in office he's as popular as Bush was immediately after 9/11. Also, in the fall of 1981 the postal workers were due a new contract, at the time they had about 600,000 workers versus 15,000 controllers, so the post office was considered the biggest threat. So in August to avoid a showdown with the post office it was in the government's best interest to play hardball with the controllers even though in overall scheme of things settling with the controllers would of been less costly. In fact, due to the large volume of new FAA hires in 1982 we are seeing present day shortages in controllers. 2007 is exactly 25 years later when many of those replacement controllers can now retire.

I've never been fired, I did call up a boss once at 2am drunk and yelled "I QUIT"I had a buddy who was a telemarketer. He got sick of it and decided to quit. He wanted to make it good and simple.

He yelled out that he got a sale so the closer/manager would come over to close the sale for him. Everyone was cheering and clapping with the manager yelling from across the room "Good job!". My buddy just walked out after yelling out, never to be seen there again.

When the closer/manager came to his computer, he sat down and looked at the screen. It simply read in large print, "**** YOU. I QUIT.".

The more I thought about it, 1981 did make sense. Damn how time flys. I remember how upset I was for my friend, they would not rehire him after everything blew over. He had all of that expensive training like you did, but could not find a job of any comparable nature.
It gave me some serious concerns about how safe our airways were. The ATC guys were working way too long of hours with substandard equipment.
Sorry you got caught up in that, because the whole thing made little sense to me.

*edit* as a matter of fact, I just remembered something. When I first heard the news about the 911 planes, my first thought was to blame the scab/n00b ATCs. That is what I told my wife as an initial reaction, couldn't have been further off.

Been whacked twice. First job I had when I got out of the Navy was at a small law firm in the suburbs. The boss's wife acted as the office manager, and OMG she was the vilest c#nt that ever drew breath. Hated me from day one, treated me like shit, and the boss, who was clearly afraid of her, couldn't (or wouldn't) do much to intervene. What an unprofessional mess. Anyway, she tried to get him to whack me for over three years, and finally I mouthed off to her defending somebody else and that was it. I could tell the boss felt bad, but he pulled the trigger. I actually got a decent little severance package, which was nearly unheard of at my pion level back then.

Second job I got fired from was the worst job I ever had, and still, I lasted two years. I was going to quit the first of the year and was just sticking around to collect my year end bonus. Unfortunately, I did little to conceal my intentions. They fired me the day checks were passed out, right before Christmas. What bastards.

Was fired from 'The Corner' in Westport shortly after forgetting about a table. To be fair, we had 10-12 table stations and later in the day/morning as servers got their break time we rotated through the whole floor with ~18 table stations. I wasn't particularly popular with the rest of the staff as I was a heterosexual male. I suspect that had something to do with it as well.

Only been fired twice, both when much younger. First time, at a video store was pretty clueless about things and was'nt real motivated (hence working at a video store). Anyways, was asked to the back office and the owner told me he was "letting me go" and then handed my check and $20.00 since he knew a rode the bus. So that was cool. Later on in life, was working in Maintenance at a Complex and the boss was a real Bitch. And so she caught me on a bad day, just shoveled and salted the walks and stairs all morning and she popped off so a knocked everything off her desk including the monitor, with one sweeping motion. and then threw my keys at her and nailed her in the chest and she began to cry hysterically and asked me not to hurt her. I was taken back and apologized and walked out. CRazy, to this day it still plays out strange in my memory.

I worked at the Zarda in BS as a cook, and they always scheduled me on Saturdays when I told them not to because I always had basketball tournaments in HS. They kept scheduling me, I would continue to miss work and not call in so one day the boss called me in one day and said that I was being let go because I had missed too much work and I told him from the very beginning when I got hired that I couldn't work on Saturdays because of HS basketball and he chose to do it anyways. I just told him that this was just a part time job and it's not like I can just find one somewhere else because this was the first place I applied to just to get a job (I was 16 at the time) and just so happened I was hired on the spot, and so I just walked out after that conversation. When he sees me now he acts like he's my best friend that he hasn't seen in 10 yrs and I just tell him to **** off. Not that I have a grudge against him because it was just a $6 hr job for 15hrs a week if that, but I've always thought he's been a HUGE douchbag.
