This is amazing. The Raiders are a sad, sad organization.

http://mvn.com/nfl-cardinals/2007/09/02/thanks-oakland-cardinals-jump-on-moses-after-raiders-reportedly-cut-him-by-mistake/

In what has to be one of the strangest internet stories i’ve heard in some time, it is being reported all over the Internet and sports fan sites that due to an administrative mistake at the Raiders headquarters 3rd round pick Quentin Moses was mistakenly included in the Raiders cut list to the NFL.

This was the report on the KFFL fan site earlier today:

"Radio 680am just reported that Quentin Moses was let go in error. Apparently Don Johnson, an assistant coach on the defensive line had submitted a prioritized list of players he wanted to keep. Moses was inadvertently left off the list. He then sent a separate email to a guy named Jeff Birren who works in administration. Birren thought Moses was to be added to the release list, so he added the name and faxed it in to league offices in New York. The error was not discovered until after the move was official. Accidents happen."

680 am would be KNBR, the big sports radio station in the Bay area that covers the MLB Giants and SF 49ers. I haven’t heard the reports, but the Cardinals fan sites are covered with similar postings so I’d say where there is smoke, there is fire. I’d suspect that if there is truth to the fact that some staffers at Raiders HQ made a mistake that the story will come out in the next few days as local media up there looks into it.

The bottom line is that with the injury to Chike Okeafor the Arizona Cardinals were desperate for a DE that could bring a pass rush and be a better fit for the hybrid 3-4 scheme they are trying to run this year. To have a prospect like Quentin Moses drop into their laps, and to fill the single biggest area of need on the defense, is an amazing stroke of good luck. Even if Moses isn’t an impact player and is merely “good” thats a substantial degree better for the Cardinals then what they had on final cut downs. It is going to be very interesting to see how Moses fits with the Cardinals and if the potential he showed at U of GA can be realized here in Arizona.

Peter King mentioned this earlier today..

e. Something stinks in Oakland. The Raiders released third-round defensive end Quentin Moses. When I was in Raiders camp, there was talk of him starting this year. Smells like a disagreement between Al Davis and Lane Kiffin over the final roster. To me, it's a terrible mistake. Moses will play, and play well, in the NFL, and the Raiders will be embarrassed over this. The Cardinals claimed him. I bet he'll be starting for the Cardinals by Oct. 1. What a dumb cut that was.

Well, this is Kiffin's take...at least publicly.

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?p=2353902

Kiffin spoke for the first time since making roster cuts Saturday. The biggest surprise on that lost was Moses, who was the first pick of the third round and impressed the coaches early in training camp.

Moses, who was beaten out by fifth-rounder Jay Richardson and veteran Chris Clemmons, was immediately picked up by Arizona.

"There were some hard ones where it wasn't that a guy wasn't doing everything that we asked," Kiffin said. "We wish great luck to Quentin and I think he'll be a good player in this league. But at the end of looking at all of it we had other people that could help us more."

That would be poetic justice. To have him play in the same division as the Raiders. Would have been good signing too with Allen gone for 2 games.

I prefer to think that they cut him on purpose, because it's funnier to think that they blew a 3rd round pick this badly. If he was released by mistake, it would probably never happen again. If they released him on purpose, it's yet another notch on their list of blown picks in recent years.

This waivers thingy. Is there an order in which teams get to pick? Were the Cards first?

For the Cardinals, it made their decision to dump third-rounder Buster Davis (who also received a $610,000 signing bonus) a wash.

I think this is hilarious. On some other boards, Oakland fans have been saying he was cut because their d-line is sooooooo damn good. It is nice to see that he was actually cut because their front office/coaching staff is sooooo damn stupid.

Well looking at there are a few good points made..

If it was an accident the Raiders could just tell the League office and they would fix it ala Owens...

And the big one... If Oakland really wanted him they are higher up on the Waiver chain then Arizona...

That isn't how it works. After Oakland cut him, every other team had a chance to sign him to their active roster before Oakland could do anything. The Cardinals signed him to their 53.

This has to be a front office mistake. I don't care what the third round pick has done you don't cut a third round pick before he even plays a game. (basically a second rounder) by the sound of it their coaching staff saw nothing but good in him...

You sure that is not just for the PS.. I think they could have added him back to their Active Roster.. They follow the waiver wire, but if you pick up the person they have to be added to the active roster...

I think you're mixing administrative incompetence with football incompetence.

Though I still think Blackledge can do well if we give him the opportunity.
