The Western Athletic Conference has basically banned the Haka. They haven’t come out & stated that, but last weekend’s assessing the Warriors as being guilty of ‘unsportsman-like behavior’ - before the game even started against Louisiana Tech - amounts to the same thing. The University of Hawaii Warriors didn’t even do the Haka on the field: it was performed in front of their locker area, facing a group of 200 of their supporters. Head Coach June Jones checked with the officiating crew prior to the start of the game as to what the ruling was on the Haka, and was told that as long as it wasn’t on-field, or facing the Louisiana Tech players then it would be fine. Coin tossed, the Bulldogs elected to receive, and the Warriors were immediately assessed the 15 yard penalty.

Jones stated - “The rule hasn’t changed since last year, and we were allowed to do it.” Which is entirely true. What’s happened is that there have been some complaints about it, and in what amounts to micro-management, the WAC have folded.

Lay off Hawaii. That's where I want my son to get his scholarship!

No, I'm siding with Hawai'i. Doing the haka is awesome.

So are they going to ban that weird black guy bouncy thing that every other football team does?

Maybe I'm just channeling Zirin, but this whole anti-Haka thing seems to be pretty much the textbook definition of xenophobia. If I were from Borneo, I'd probably consider Ray Lewis' pre-game antics terrifying, too.

the thing is though they aren't allowed to do it in front of the opposition. The whole point of the haka is that it was a war dance to put fear in their enemies. If you watch rugby or virtually any sport containg new Zealand, Tonga and Fiji they will do it right after the national anthems.

that is why college football is more fun is the pregame traditions. Clemson touching the rock, the rutgers chopping the wood. Notre dame's band playing the opposing teams fight song. Tradition and flavor isw what college football is all about.

The WAC better watch it. They should not be making enemies since their continued existence depends on keeping their top programs happy. The Mountain West may eventually raid this conference of three of their top teams (Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii/Nevada) to give them 12 and championship game eligibility.

How can the refs enforce a penalty in-game for something that took place before the game even started?

If this was done prior to kick off... refs should not be able to call anything.

I was amused for a few minutes by the comments on this story on deadspin today.

Are you a commenter on there?

The NCAA officials "take charge" of the game well before the actual kick-off. It used to be 30 minutes, but I am not sure what the time period is now.

Do the dance before the ref's "take charge" of the game and everyone wins then.

Now, if Jim Bob Cooter's buddies were doing the Haka...
